Why this reference exists

Water quality affects every plumbing job: pipe life, fixture finish, appliance longevity, customer skin + hair, taste, smell. Whole-house water treatment is a solid install ticket + recurring service revenue. This reference covers the working framework for diagnosing water issues + selecting treatment.

Common water quality issues

Water testing

Initial water test:

  • 12-parameter standard test: a modest lab fee
  • Customer pays for testing
  • Lab results in 5-10 business days
  • Customer doesn't trust without numbers

Quick on-site tests:

  • Iron test strip: similar
  • pH meter: an inexpensive handheld meter
  • TDS meter: cheaper still than a pH meter

At-home water test kits:

  • Customer-mailed kits: several times the cost of the professional lab test (full panel)
  • Trust + speed lower than professional

For most service: combine on-site quick tests + lab confirmation for major treatment recommendations.

Hardness measurement

Hardness measured in:

  • Grains per gallon (GPG) - U.S. standard
  • Parts per million (PPM) calcium carbonate
  • 1 GPG = 17.1 PPM

Hardness categories:

  • 0-3 GPG: soft
  • 3-7 GPG: slightly hard
  • 7-10 GPG: moderately hard
  • 10-15 GPG: hard
  • 15-30 GPG: very hard
  • 30+ GPG: extremely hard

Symptoms vary by hardness:

  • < 7 GPG: usually no problems
  • 7-15 GPG: white deposits, customer complaint
  • 15+ GPG: appliance damage, pipe scaling, customer-paid solution

Water softener systems

Ion exchange softener (most common):

  • Salt (NaCl) regenerates resin bed
  • Exchanges Na+ for Ca2+ + Mg2+
  • 50,000-80,000 grain capacity typical
  • Regenerates every few days based on water use

Salt-free conditioner:

  • Doesn't actually remove hardness; conditions to prevent scaling
  • Lower environmental impact
  • 5-10 year service life
  • Cheaper ongoing (no salt)
  • Less effective at extreme hardness

For most customer: ion exchange softener (10-25 GPG hard water).

For low/medium hardness + environmental customer: salt-free conditioner.

For extreme hardness (25+ GPG): ion exchange.

Iron + manganese filters

Air-injection oxidation filter:

  • Pump air into water
  • Oxidizes iron + manganese
  • Filter media captures oxidized particles
  • A premium install among filtration options
  • Self-cleaning + media-replenishment

Greensand filter (older technology):

  • Uses potassium permanganate for oxidation
  • Somewhat cheaper to install than air-injection
  • More maintenance

Iron tolerance:

  • < 0.3 ppm: typically no problem
  • 0.3-1.0 ppm: customer notices, treatable
  • 1.0 ppm: serious problem; aggressive treatment

Acid neutralizer

For low pH water (acidic):

  • pH 5.0-6.5: copper pinholes, blue staining
  • Calcite (calcium carbonate) media
  • Slow-release calcium adjusts pH up
  • Media replenishment every 1-3 years
  • Mid-range install cost among treatment options

Common in well water, rural areas.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

Whole-house RO:

  • Filters everything; minimal salt + dissolved solids
  • The most expensive RO tier to install + maintain the annual filter on
  • Wastes 3-5 gallons water per 1 gallon produced
  • Premium installation

Under-sink RO:

  • Just drinking water
  • A small fraction of the whole-house RO install cost, with a cheaper annual filter too
  • Most popular RO format

For most: under-sink RO at kitchen sink + whole-house softener separately.

UV sterilizer

For bacterial water:

  • UV lamp in housing
  • Water passes through UV exposure
  • Bacteria DNA damaged; can't reproduce
  • Mid-range install cost
  • Modest annual bulb replacement cost

Required pre-treatment:

  • Sediment filter (so bacteria not shielded by debris)
  • Sometimes softener (hard water builds scale on UV lamp)

Common for: well water, recent boil-water advisory areas, customer-driven safety.

Carbon filter

For chlorine + taste:

  • Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine + chemicals
  • One of the cheaper whole-house treatment installs
  • Modest annual cartridge replacement cost
  • 2-5 year filter media replacement (whole-house)

City water customers often want this; chlorinated water tastes strong + dries skin.

Sediment filter (point-of-entry)

For visible particulates:

  • Spin-down filter (washable)
  • Cartridge filter (replaceable)
  • The cheapest point-of-entry install on this list
  • Low per-cartridge cost (3-6 month replacement)

Universal recommendation for well water + areas with old supply pipe.

Treatment order (for combination)

When water needs multiple treatments, order matters:

  1. Sediment filter (first; protects downstream from particulate damage)
  2. Iron/Manganese filter (if needed)
  3. Acid neutralizer (if needed)
  4. Water softener (treats post-corrected pH)
  5. Carbon filter (post-softener, removes chlorine)
  6. UV sterilizer (last; treats clearest water)
  7. RO at drinking-water fixtures (under sink)

Some installations bypass certain steps. Custom per water test.

Water treatment customers benefit from:

  • No water test: guessing; mediocre results
  • Wrong sequence: iron filter after softener = iron precipitates inside softener
  • Undersized softener: regenerates daily; salt cost high

  • No bypass valve: any treatment failure = no water in house
  • No customer education: customer doesn't refill salt; softener fails silently
  • UV lamp without sediment pre-filter: bacteria shielded by particulates

When customer can't afford whole-house

Phased approach:

Customer can grow into full treatment over years.

IRA + utility incentives

Water treatment generally NOT eligible for federal credit. Some utility rebates exist:
