Aerobic Septic System Service

Why this matters

Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) are required in many residential applications - small lots, sites with poor soil percolation, sensitive watershed protection. Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Arkansas + others have widespread ATU installation. Unlike conventional anaerobic septic, ATUs require regular maintenance - most states MANDATE a service contract with quarterly OR semi-annual visits. This recurring contract is the lucrative side of ATU work.

How aerobic systems differ from conventional septic

Conventional septic (anaerobic)

  • Two-chamber tank; gravity flow
  • Bacteria break down waste anaerobically (without oxygen)
  • Effluent flows to drainfield by gravity OR pump
  • Service: pump tank every 3 - 5 years
  • 90 - 98% of US septic installations

Aerobic (ATU)

  • Three or four chambers
  • Compressor or blower forces air into one chamber
  • Aerobic bacteria break down waste in the presence of oxygen (much faster + more thorough)
  • Clarifier chamber separates solids
  • Disinfection chamber (chlorine or UV) before final discharge
  • Final dispersal: spray irrigation OR drip OR drainfield
  • Service: quarterly OR semi-annual maintenance

ATU produces cleaner effluent (35 - 60% reduction in BOD vs conventional). Discharge can be on the surface (spray field) in many jurisdictions.

State licensure + certification

Most states require:

  • Installer license for installation
  • Service / maintenance license for ongoing service
  • Customer must have signed service contract on file (annual OR per state)
  • Service reports submitted to state regulatory agency

State examples:

  • Texas: TCEQ certification for installers + maintenance providers; quarterly service contracts mandatory
  • Florida: Department of Health regulates; service contracts required
  • North Carolina: state-certified maintenance providers
  • Arkansas: State Health Department regulations

Without state licensure: technician can't service these systems legally. ALWAYS confirm jurisdiction before quoting.

Quarterly maintenance procedure

Step 1: Customer interview + alarm check

  1. Any alarms since last visit?
  2. Any unusual smells?
  3. Any spray heads not popping?
  4. Any green / brown stains in spray area?
  5. Any backup or slow drains?

Step 2: Visual + system inspection

  1. Inspect pretreatment chamber: solids level (pump if over 50% capacity)
  2. Inspect clarifier: clarity of effluent visible
  3. Inspect aeration chamber: visible air bubbling
  4. Compressor / blower running + drawing correct amperage

Step 3: Air supply verification

  1. Listen / feel for compressor operation
  2. Check compressor diaphragm condition (cracked / worn = no air)
  3. Inspect air filter (clean OR replace; common item every visit)
  4. Verify air diffusers in aeration chamber not clogged
  5. Air flow at diffuser visible as bubbling pattern

Step 4: Effluent quality

  1. Visual: should be clear OR light gray
  2. Smell: earthy OR mildly chlorinated; NOT sewage
  3. If chlorinated: add chlorine tablets to chlorinator (typically 1-inch trichlor tabs OR specialty septic tabs; check brand spec)
  4. If UV: inspect UV bulb; replace if past life
  5. Sample if state requires + customer is contracted for testing

Step 5: Pump operation

  1. Verify dosing pump cycles
  2. Listen for normal operation
  3. Inspect pump screen / filter
  4. Verify float switches not stuck

Step 6: Spray field OR drip field

  1. Inspect spray heads / drip lines for clog
  2. Verify spray pattern in expected area
  3. Replace damaged heads
  4. Check ground for ponding / saturation (indicates field problem)

Step 7: Sludge + solids assessment

  1. Measure sludge depth in pretreatment chamber
  2. Pretreatment over 50% solids: pump
  3. Aeration chamber sludge: 30% solids triggers waste removal

Step 8: Documentation

  1. Service report form (state-specific)
  2. Photos of any concerns
  3. Customer signature
  4. State submission per regulation

Common ATU issues

  • Air diffuser clogged: bacteria + silt; clean OR replace.
  • Sludge overload: customer over-disposal; pump + educate.
  • Chlorine feeder issue: tabs run out, stuck, OR wrong type. Inspect + clean + replace.
  • Spray head clog: mineral or organic deposit; replace heads.
  • Drainfield saturation: soil capacity exceeded; engineer referral.
  • UV bulb failure: replace every 12 - 24 months.
  • Float switch stuck: solids coat float; clean OR replace.

Customer education

ATU systems are NOT install-and-forget. Customer compliance matters:

  • Don't use as garbage disposal (excess solids)
  • Avoid antibacterial soaps (kills the bacteria the system needs)
  • Limit bleach + harsh chemicals (kills aerobic bacteria)
  • No paint, motor oil, paint thinner
  • Customer-side: keep records of service + state-submitted reports

Pump (when needed)

Pumping is similar to conventional septic:

  1. Pretreatment chamber pumped (the dominant area)
  2. Aeration chamber pumped if heavy sludge
  3. Clarifier rarely pumped
  4. Frequency: every 1 - 3 years for ATU (more frequent than conventional)

NEVER service an ATU without confirming the customer's signed maintenance contract is current. In many states, lapsed maintenance contracts trigger state health enforcement + the property is in non-compliance status. The contract is the legal mechanism that makes you the responsible party - without it, you have no scope authority. Confirm contract status at every visit; refresh annually with the customer.
