Drainage pipe materials vary widely by age, application, + region. The tech who identifies pipe materials understands customer's likely issues + recommends appropriate repair. This is the field card.

Common drainage materials

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):

  • Most common new construction
  • Schedule 40 (residential)
  • White color typical
  • Sometimes gray for foam-core
  • 50-100+ year life
  • Easy to work with

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene):

  • Black color
  • Older alternative to PVC
  • Some regions use exclusively
  • Solvent-welded (different from PVC)
  • 50+ year life

Cast iron:

  • Traditional residential
  • Black, heavy
  • 75+ year life typical
  • Brittle over decades
  • Heavy + quiet (sound advantage)

Galvanized steel:

  • Old residential (pre-1960)
  • Rust internally over time
  • 40-60 year life
  • Replace when failing

Copper (drain):

  • Less common drainage
  • Used in some installations
  • 50+ year life

Lead:

  • Very old (pre-1950)
  • Toilet flanges, bends, traps
  • Health concern
  • Replace when accessed

Clay (vitrified):

  • Sewer line / main only
  • Old construction
  • 50-100 year typical
  • Brittle; collapses

Orangeburg (bituminous fiber):

  • Sewer line (1940s-1970s)
  • Tar-impregnated fiber
  • Failure-prone (deteriorates)
  • Replace when discovered

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene):

  • Newer; sewer line / commercial
  • Trenchless installation
  • Flexible
  • 50+ year life

PVC vs ABS

PVC:

  • White (sometimes gray)
  • Solvent-welded with PVC primer + cement
  • Most widely accepted by code
  • Used everywhere

ABS:

  • Black
  • Solvent-welded with ABS cement (no primer typically)
  • Some regions only
  • Cheaper sometimes

Mixed connections:

  • PVC + ABS = transition fitting OR rubber coupling
  • Don't solvent-weld dissimilar materials

Identifying pipe material

Color + texture:

  • White / gray + smooth: PVC
  • Black + smooth: ABS
  • Black + textured / heavy: cast iron
  • Gray + threaded: galvanized
  • Copper color: copper (rare drain)
  • Black-tar fiber: Orangeburg
  • Tan / brown crock: clay (old)

Sound when tapped:

  • PVC + ABS: plastic sound
  • Cast iron: metallic ring
  • Galvanized: metallic ring (different)

Joint type:

  • PVC: solvent-welded
  • ABS: solvent-welded
  • Cast iron: hub + spigot OR no-hub couplings
  • Galvanized: threaded
  • Copper: soldered OR push-fit

Common failure modes

PVC:

  • Joint failure (poor solvent weld)
  • UV damage (if exposed to sun)
  • Cracking from impact
  • Generally durable

ABS:

  • Similar to PVC
  • Some 1980s ABS had quality issues

Cast iron:

  • Rust internally (especially bottom of pipe)
  • Crack at hub (joint)
  • Outside corrosion in damp environment
  • Replacement often section-by-section

Galvanized:

  • Internal corrosion
  • Reduced diameter (scale)
  • Pinhole leaks
  • Joint failure
  • Often replace whole sections

Cast iron + galvanized:

  • Often together in old homes
  • Galvanized fails first

Clay:

  • Root infiltration (joints)
  • Crack from settling
  • Crack from soil pressure
  • Replace sections

Orangeburg:

  • Deteriorates from inside
  • Crushes under soil load
  • Collapses
  • Common failure mode
  • Replace when discovered

Cross-trade observations

Customer's drainage issue:

  • Identify pipe material visible
  • Note age / condition
  • Anticipate cause based on material

Older home with multiple drainage issues:

  • Likely material at end of life
  • Galvanized OR clay common
  • Plan for replacement

Customer's chronic clogs in same area:

  • Galvanized scale
  • Clay roots
  • Damaged section

Visual inspection signs

Internal rust (galvanized):

  • Visible in pipe end OR through cleanout
  • Reduced diameter
  • Customer's slow drains

Surface corrosion (cast iron):

  • Bottom of pipe pitted
  • Sometimes visible from outside
  • Eventually pinhole

Cracks:

  • Visible in PVC OR ABS
  • Sometimes from impact
  • Sometimes from age

Camera inspection

For sewer / main:

  • Identifies material
  • Identifies damage
  • Customer sees condition
  • Documents for sale

Repair materials

For PVC repair:

  • New PVC pipe + fittings
  • PVC primer + cement
  • Sometimes rubber couplings

For ABS repair:

  • New ABS pipe + fittings
  • ABS cement
  • Rubber couplings

For mixed material:

  • Rubber coupling (Fernco-style)
  • Transition fittings
  • Code-approved for use

For cast iron:

  • No-hub couplings (modern)
  • Lead + oakum (old; rare today)
  • New PVC OR ABS section + couplings

For galvanized:

  • Often replace with PVC OR copper / PEX (supply)
  • Repair with mechanical couplings

Code considerations

Code-approved materials:

  • IPC + UPC list approved
  • Local variations
  • Drainage materials specifically

Some old materials:

  • Lead: don't use new
  • Galvanized: don't use new for drain (rare); use for venting some
  • Clay: rarely new installation
  • Orangeburg: never new

Customer education

Old materials:

  • Customer's home may have failing material
  • Plan replacement
  • Sometimes triggered by sale OR repair

Newer materials:

  • PVC / ABS reliable
  • Don't worry; long life

Maintenance:

  • Don't pour grease
  • Don't flush wipes
  • Address slow drains promptly

New PVC (most common today):

  • White
  • Schedule 40 (residential)
  • Solvent-welded
  • Easy + reliable

ABS (some regions):

  • Black
  • Solvent-welded
  • Per local code

No-hub couplings:

  • For cast iron + transitions
  • Stainless steel band
  • Rubber sleeve
  • Quick installation

Working with PVC

Cutting:

  • Tubing cutter OR saw
  • Square cut critical
  • Deburr inside

Joining:

  • Clean
  • Primer
  • Cement (purple primer; blue OR clear cement)
  • Quarter-turn while assembling
  • Hold briefly

Curing:

  • Per manufacturer
  • Typically use after few hours
  • Pressure test after full cure (24 hours sometimes)

Working with ABS

Cutting:

  • Same as PVC

Joining:

  • Clean
  • No primer typically (some)
  • Black ABS cement
  • Quarter-turn
  • Hold briefly

Faster cure than PVC.

Working with cast iron

Cutting:

  • Cast iron cutter (chain cutter)
  • Or specialized saw

Joining:

  • Old: lead + oakum (rare today)
  • Modern: no-hub couplings
  • Cleaner + simpler

Working with galvanized

Cutting:

  • Pipe cutter OR saw
  • Threading new sections
  • Difficult; often easier to replace with other material

Joining:

  • Threaded
  • Pipe dope OR tape
  • Slow + heavy

Soil + bury depth

For sewer / main:

  • Per local code (frost depth, vehicle load)
  • Typically 18-36" below grade
  • Pipe rated for bury depth
  • Backfill specifications

For house drainage:

  • Inside structure usually
  • Less restrictive
