Wet Spot in Yard: Field vs Line vs Runoff
Why this matters
A wet spot in the yard sends customers straight to "my field is failing," which is the most expensive possible conclusion, and often the wrong one. The wet area could be surfacing effluent from a failing or overloaded drainfield, a leak in the building sewer or a tank seam wetting the ground above it, or plain stormwater and grading runoff that has nothing to do with the septic system at all. The three have wildly different costs and fixes, and confirming the cause before quoting a field replacement protects both the customer and your credibility. This tree translates "wet spot" into field-versus-line-versus-runoff using location, smell, persistence, and a couple of cheap confirming tests.
Symptom presentation
Characterize the wet spot precisely:
- Location relative to the system. Over the drainfield trenches points to the field. Along the building-sewer or tank-to-field run points to a line or tank leak. Away from the system, in a low or compacted area, points to runoff.
- Smell. A sewage or sulfide odor implicates effluent (field or line). No odor, just water, leans toward runoff.
- Persistence and weather correlation. Persistent wetness in dry weather points to effluent. Wetness only after rain points to stormwater or a high water table.
- Surface condition. Lush, fast-growing grass or black, greasy soil over the field is a classic surfacing-effluent tell. Eroded, silty runoff channels point to grading.
Quick checks
- Map the wet spot against the system layout. Walk the as-built or locate the tank, line, and field, then place the wet area on that map.
- Smell the wet area for sewage odor.
- Probe the soil for saturation depth and for effluent (black, greasy, odorous) versus clean rainwater.
- Note the weather history. Recent heavy rain versus a dry spell discriminates runoff from effluent.
- Check grading and downspouts for stormwater concentrating at the wet spot.

Branch from location and smell first:
- Wet spot directly over the drainfield, sewage odor, lush or black greasy grass, persistent in dry weather? Surfacing effluent from a failing or hydraulically overloaded field. The soil can no longer accept the effluent, so it rises. Cause = field; confirm and assess for rest, repair, or replacement.
- Wet spot tracking along the building-sewer or tank-to-field line, sewage odor, persistent? A leak or break in the line or a tank seam wetting the ground above. Cause = line/tank leak; camera or excavate to confirm the break point.
- Wet spot away from the system, no sewage odor, appears or worsens after rain? Stormwater runoff, downspout discharge, or a grading low point collecting water. Cause = runoff; not a septic problem.
- Wet spot over the field but only after heavy rain, no strong odor? High water table or saturated soil from infiltration, stressing a marginal field. Cause = field hydraulics plus groundwater; the field may be marginal rather than failed.
- Wet spot with effluent odor but the field is dry and the line tests clear? A leaking tank lid, riser, or seam at grade. Cause = tank access; confirm at the tank.
The translation rule: effluent wet spots smell of sewage and persist in dry weather; runoff wet spots have no sewage odor and follow rain; location over the field versus along the line versus away from the system splits the three. Confirm the smell and the weather correlation before you ever say "field."
Confirming diagnosis
- Dye test. Introduce a tracer dye into the system; dye surfacing at the wet spot confirms an effluent source and localizes it to field or line.
- Camera or pressure test the line to confirm or rule out a building-sewer break.
- Soil probe and effluent inspection. Black, greasy, odorous saturation confirms effluent; clean water confirms runoff.
- Dry-weather recheck. A wet spot that disappears in dry weather and returns only after rain confirms runoff over effluent.
Surfacing effluent is raw or partially treated sewage and a public-health hazard. It carries pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites) and can expose children and pets. Restrict access to the wet area, do not allow contact, and advise the customer to keep people and animals away until the source is corrected. Many jurisdictions require reporting a surfacing-effluent failure to the local health authority.
Remediation
- Field surfacing: assess for hydraulic overload (correct the source), rest a marginal field, repair a localized clog, or plan replacement if broadly failed.
- Line or tank leak: repair the break or reseal the tank seam, lid, or riser found on camera or excavation.
- Runoff: redirect downspouts, regrade to drain water away from the system, and reassure the customer the septic system is not the cause.
- High water table: evaluate whether the marginal field needs upgrading or a curtain drain to keep groundwater off it.
- Document the dye result, smell, weather correlation, and source so the customer sees why the diagnosis matched the cost.
