Drainfield Failure Diagnostic
Overview
Drainfield failure is the most expensive septic problem. Diagnosis must be careful + thorough; recommending replacement when only repair is needed costs customer a five-figure sum unnecessarily; missing actual failure causes contamination.
Symptoms
Customer may report:
- Slow drains throughout house
- Sewage backup
- Wet spots in yard
- Foul odor outside
- Lush green grass over drainfield (always-watered)
- Standing water in yard
- Toilet won't flush properly
- Septic alarm going off (pumped systems)
Diagnostic procedure
Step 1: Customer interview
- When did problems start?
- Sudden or gradual?
- Recent changes (additional people, garbage disposal, water usage)?
- Last tank pump date?
- Recent rain events?
Step 2: Visual inspection of yard
Walk drainfield area:
- Wet spots: saturated soil indicating effluent surfacing
- Lush green grass: sewage acts as fertilizer
- Settling soil: indicating subsurface decomposition
- Odors: H2S or sewage smell
- Distance from house: confirm drainfield location
Step 3: Tank check
- Open tank cover
- Check water level:
- Normal: just above outlet baffle bottom
- High: outlet baffle submerged → system backing up
- Very high: tank near full → emergency
- Note: high water level confirms drainfield not absorbing
Step 4: Distribution box check
- Locate D-box (between tank + field)
- Open cover
- Check distribution:
- Effluent flowing evenly to all field outlets? Or only some?
- If unbalanced: D-box clogged OR field lines unequally fouled
- Reset diverter if available (some D-boxes have flow control)
Step 5: Probe rod test
- Push rod into ground over drainfield
- Healthy soil: resistance throughout
- Saturated soil: easy push, soft, wet
- Survey multiple points to map saturated area
Step 6: Absorption test (if equipment available)
- Run controlled volume of water through system
- Observe how quickly field absorbs
- Healthy field: continues to absorb
- Failing field: surface flooding within minutes
Root causes of failure
Cause 1: Hydraulic overload (most common, often fixable)
- Daily water use exceeds field capacity
- Common after: family size increase, water-heavy appliances added, leaky toilets
- Fix: reduce water use; sometimes resolves field
Cause 2: Biological mat overgrowth
- Solids escaped from tank (not pumped enough)
- Mat coats soil + reduces absorption
- Fix: severe cases require resting OR replacement; pumping more often prevents
Cause 3: Compacted soil
- Vehicle driving over field
- Construction
- Heavy equipment
- Tree roots
- Fix: don't drive on field; sometimes replacement
Cause 4: Tree root invasion
- Roots grow into field lines + block
- Common: poplar, willow, mesquite roots seeking water
- Fix: root removal + replacement of damaged lines
Cause 5: System overload (undersized)
- Original design too small for occupancy
- Recent construction (additions, bedrooms)
- Fix: expand field OR replace system
Cause 6: Aging system
- 20-40 year typical drainfield life
- Soil clogs over decades
- Fix: replacement
Cause 7: Construction damage
- Recent excavation OR utility work damaged lines
- Fix: locate + repair specific damage
Cause 8: High groundwater
- Heavy rain or seasonal high water table
- Reduces soil absorption capacity
- Fix: sometimes resolves naturally; severe cases need drainage improvements
Triage: Is it the field or the tank?
Tank issues (cheaper to fix):
- Pump tank if not done recently
- Replace baffle if missing
- Replace tank if cracked
Field issues (more expensive):
- Repair partial sections
- Replace full system
To differentiate:
- Pump tank first
- If problems resolve: tank issue (clogged, full)
- If problems persist: field issue
Repair options (field issue)
Option 1: Rest the field
- Stop using system for 30-90 days
- Pump out as needed
- Some biological mat decays + field recovers
- Works best for hydraulic overload cause
- Customer needs alternative: rental, family stay elsewhere
Option 2: Aeration
- Inject air into soil to break up biological mat
- Specialty equipment
- Cost: a solid low-four-figure sum
- Sometimes effective; sometimes not
Option 3: Partial replacement
- Replace only damaged lines
- Cheaper than full system replacement
- A moderate four-figure to low-five-figure cost
Option 4: Full system replacement
- New tank + new field
- The single most expensive option on this list, well into five figures
- Most expensive but most reliable
- Required if site no longer supports proper drainage
Option 5: System upgrade
- Replace with advanced system (aerobic, mound, sand filter)
- For sites that don't support standard system
- Comparable to a full system replacement, often at the higher end
When customer asks "do I need replacement?"
Diagnose carefully:
- If hydraulic overload only: behavior change might fix
- If biological + soil compacted: probably replacement
- If aging (20+ years) + multiple issues: replacement
- If recent construction damage: repair specific
Don't over-recommend replacement. Don't under-recommend either. Be honest.
Customer responsibility
Customer often contributes to failures:
- Driving over field
- Pouring grease down drain
- Excessive water use
- Connecting roof drains to septic
- Garbage disposal overuse
- Wet wipes (allegedly "flushable")
Education helps prevent recurrence.
Regulatory considerations
Drainfield failures often require:
- Health department notification
- Soil testing
- Engineering for replacement
- Permits
- Inspections
Inspector + engineer fees: a real cost, ranging from a few hundred dollars to low four figures depending on scope.

- Photo every finding
- Map of system with affected areas
- Recommendations with cost
- Customer signs acknowledging condition
NEVER tell a customer "you need a new drainfield" without DEFINITIVE diagnosis. Field replacement runs deep into five figures. A wrong recommendation costs the customer enormously. Use probe rod + watch absorption + verify in multiple ways. Sometimes the problem is hydraulic overload (water usage) or tank issue (not pumped enough). Field replacement is the LAST option, not the first.
