Microinverter Comm Loss One vs Row vs All Decision Tree
Why this matters
A microinverter installation reporting communication loss is showing one of three patterns - a single unit dropped, a row dropped, or the whole array dropped - and each pattern points to a different fault domain. A single missing unit is usually that unit; a row is usually a trunk-cable issue; the whole array is usually the gateway, the PLC noise floor, or the AC backbone. Misdiagnosis sends RMA requests for units that were fine when the actual fault was a noise injector on the home circuit. The decision tree below isolates the pattern and routes to the correct fix.
Symptom presentation
Enphase Envoy or IQ Combiner reports one, several, or many microinverters offline. Online units continue producing; offline units may still produce energy locally but report nothing to the monitoring portal. Customer sees gaps in the historical production chart at the affected positions.
Quick checks
- Look at the spatial pattern in the monitoring portal. A single isolated microinverter dropped is different from a contiguous row dropped is different from every unit dropped.
- Check the Envoy or gateway status. A red status light or "lost connection to internet" message is a network issue affecting the report, not the unit itself.
- Read the gateway PLC signal strength. Enphase Envoy shows the signal strength at scan time. A strength below the OEM-defined threshold for several units indicates a broadcast medium problem.
- Confirm the AC circuit feeding the affected unit or row is energized. A tripped branch breaker mimics communication loss because the unit cannot transmit on a dead bus.
- Inspect the trunk cable connections at the AC drop and at each microinverter for water ingress, corrosion, or cap.
Isolation tree
Step 1: For one unit offline: at next service window, walk to the unit and confirm AC is present at the trunk drop. With AC present and the unit not reporting, the unit may have failed. Pull the unit and check the serial against monitoring; replace under Enphase warranty if confirmed dead.
Step 2: For one row offline (contiguous group): suspect the trunk cable, the trunk terminator (cap), or the branch breaker. Walk the row. If the row's branch breaker tripped, find the underlying cause (over-current event from a tree falling on the array, a damaged cable, an upstream connection burn). If the breaker is on, inspect the trunk for water in connectors and the terminator cap for integrity.
Step 3: For all units offline: the gateway is the next thing to look at. An Envoy with no internet but live AC continues to scan and store locally; once internet returns, data backfills. An Envoy that lost AC power, has a failed power supply, or is on a circuit that tripped does not see units. Confirm Envoy LED status against the Enphase documentation.
Step 4: For PLC noise: if the gateway is healthy and online but signal strength to all units is low, the home AC circuit has a noise injector. The most common sources are LED dimmers, GFCI outlets with bad capacitors, and EV chargers on the same panel. Disconnect candidate noise sources one at a time and rescan; the signal strength should improve when the source is removed.
Step 5: For partial-array drop after a roof event: trace the AC backbone from the gateway through the combiner to each branch. A loose or burned lug at the combiner output drops every downstream microinverter at once.
Confirming diagnosis
Single unit fault confirms by replacement test - the new unit reports normally. Trunk cable fault confirms by physical inspection of the connectors and terminator. Gateway fault confirms by Envoy status LEDs and Enlighten Mobile diagnostics. PLC noise confirms by removing-source isolation and signal strength recovery. Combiner-side fault confirms by IR or by torque audit.
Remediation
For single unit failure: RMA through Enphase warranty (10 to 25 years depending on era). Replacement is a like-for-like swap.
For trunk cable: replace the run with new Q-Cable, reseal connectors with the OEM cap kits, replace the terminator. Do not improvise terminations.
For gateway: reboot Envoy first. If reboot does not restore, replace through Enphase warranty.
For PLC noise: identify and replace the offending appliance, or install an Enphase PLC noise mitigation kit on the affected branch.
For combiner fault: re-torque all lugs to spec, replace any blackened lugs, replace combiner breaker if tripped without resolved cause.
After repair, allow 24 hours for monitoring data to backfill and confirm all units report at the next sunrise.
