Bandit Model 200 Chipper Knife Replacement Procedure
Why this matters
The Bandit Model 200+ disc-style chipper (12 in disc, 4-knife configuration on most builds) is one of the most common medium-duty chippers on tree-service routes. Dull or chipped knives turn what should be a 30-second feed into a 5-minute log fight, eat fuel, hammer the disc bearings, and increase kickback risk on twisted feedstock. Knife replacement is a maintenance task that every senior tech and crew lead should be able to perform on a tailgate without sending the chipper to the shop. This document is the procedure that gets the knives back in spec and the chipper back to production.
When to replace, not just sharpen
Pull and replace knives when:
- Visible chip or break on the cutting edge over 1/16 in deep
- Knife thickness below 1.5 in (Bandit calls for replacement at this minimum on the standard 12-in knife)
- Sharpening would put the cutting edge past the rear bolt-hole face
- Documented hour count exceeds 100 hours since last replacement on heavy hardwood routes
Sharpen and reinstall when the edge is dull but blade thickness and bolt-hole geometry are still in spec. A typical knife handles 3 to 5 sharpen cycles before retirement.
Parts and consumables
- 4 new Bandit OEM knives, 12 in, P/N varies by build year (current spec sheet on the Bandit dealer portal). Aftermarket knives from Iroquois Industries and Heavy Equipment Restoration Parts (HERP) are accepted by Bandit for warranty, others void warranty.
- 8 new knife bolts (often Grade 8 or Bandit-spec hardened); Bandit recommends new bolts at every knife change.
- Anti-seize compound (Permatex or Loctite copper-based)
- Clean shop rag
Tools
- 3/4 in or 19 mm impact socket on a 1/2 in impact wrench (cordless or pneumatic)
- 3/4 in or 19 mm torque wrench, 100 to 200 ft-lb range
- Bandit disc locking pin (supplied with the chipper) or a piece of 3/4 in steel rod
- Knife setting gauge (Bandit P/N varies; aftermarket gauges from Iroquois work)
- Pry bar
- Safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves rated ANSI A4 minimum
Lockout and disc locking
This is the single most important step. A free-spinning chipper disc weighing several hundred pounds carries enough stored energy to amputate a hand.
- Stop the engine. Remove the ignition key. Tag with a lockout tag.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Tag.
- Engage the disc brake (most Model 200 builds have a manual disc brake handle).
- Open the upper chipper housing per the Bandit operator manual.
- Insert the disc locking pin through the housing port into the disc lock-hole. Confirm the disc cannot rotate. If your unit lacks the factory pin port, jam a 3/4 in steel rod through the disc bolt-circle into the housing frame; do not rely on the disc brake alone.
ANSI Z133-2017 Section 7.4 prohibits operation or service of any wood chipper without effective lockout / tagout per OSHA 1910.147. Skipping this step is a citable offense and a documented cause of fatal industry incidents.
Knife removal
- Rotate the disc to bring the first knife to a convenient access angle. Re-engage the lock pin.
- Apply impact wrench to each of the two bolt heads on the knife. Bandit knives use a recessed pocket and counter-sunk bolt; the heads sit flush.
- Crack each bolt. If a bolt will not break free, do not heat it; the disc steel near the pocket loses temper under torch heat and will fail in fatigue. Use a longer breaker bar.
- Remove bolts. Discard.
- Lift the knife out of the pocket using the pry bar if it has bonded. Wipe the pocket clean.
Repeat for all 4 knives.
Inspect the disc
With the knives off, run a finger along each pocket lip. You are looking for:
- Cracks radiating from the bolt-hole counter-bore
- Wallowed bolt-holes (oversized from a previous loose-knife event)
- Burrs on the pocket lip from prior knife seating
Crack found: stop, do not reinstall. Disc requires Bandit-authorized inspection and possible replacement.
Knife installation and gauge-setting
- Set the knife into the pocket, cutting edge oriented per the disc rotation arrow on the housing.
- Apply anti-seize to the new bolt threads, sparingly. Do not get anti-seize on the bolt head seat surface or on the knife seating face.
- Hand-thread bolts into the disc, no impact yet.
- Set the knife gauge against the anvil bar. Bandit calls for a knife-to-anvil clearance typically 0.060 to 0.080 in (verify current operator manual). The knife projection from the disc face is set by the gauge; the knife slides in the pocket until the gauge bottoms on the bar.
- Hold knife position with the gauge, torque bolts to Bandit spec (typically 150 ft-lb for the 3/4 in Grade 8 bolt; verify your build's manual). Use the torque wrench, not the impact, for final torque.
- Remove gauge. Repeat for all 4 knives.
Knife gauge setting is the difference between clean chips and a chipper that bounces wood back at the operator. Skipping the gauge step is a callback to the shop within a week.
Anvil clearance check
After all 4 knives are torqued:
- Manually rotate the disc 360 degrees (lock pin removed, brake released, hand on disc with leather gloves)
- Confirm knives clear the anvil bar with the spec'd gap at all 4 positions
- If any knife strikes the anvil, stop. The knife is set too far out or the anvil is worn. Re-gauge or shim the anvil per the Bandit manual.
Restart sequence
- Re-engage disc brake
- Close upper housing, confirm latch
- Reconnect battery, remove lockout tags
- Restart engine, allow disc to spin up to operating speed
- Feed a single piece of soft brush (2 in to 3 in green wood) as a test
- Listen for irregular thump; a thump means an unbalanced knife or a knife not seated. Stop, repeat lockout, re-check.
Service interval and record-keeping
Record on the chipper service log:
- Date and operator
- Hour-meter reading
- Knife P/N installed, bolt P/N installed
- Gauge setting confirmed
- Test cut confirmed clean
A Bandit chipper running 6 days a week on residential tree work typically sees knife rotation every 7 to 14 days. Build the rotation into the Manuall recurring-maintenance schedule for the unit.
Never reinstall a used bolt with a new knife. Bandit and OSHA 1910.213 cite documented disc-knife-bolt failure events where a re-used bolt yielded under operating load and discharged a knife at lethal velocity through the chipper housing. Bolts are single-use hardware. Order them with the knives.
