Common Knots + Rope Work Reference
Why this matters
Hoisting tools to a roof, securing a ladder, rigging equipment, towing a stuck truck - rope work is field reality. The tech who can tie 6 functional knots gets the job done; the one who can't waits for the boss. The knot is the difference between equipment falling and equipment landing safely. This is the field card.
Rope materials
Nylon: stretches under load (absorbs shock); abrasion-resistant. General rigging + tow. 8% - 15% stretch.
Polyester / Dacron: low stretch, UV resistant, marine + industrial. 2 - 4% stretch.
Polypropylene: floats; cheap; UV-degrades. Light-duty.
Manila / sisal (natural fiber): traditional; for non-critical applications. Susceptible to rot.
Static rope (low-stretch): 1 - 3% stretch; rappelling, lifelines. EN 1891.
Dynamic rope: 30 - 40% stretch; rock climbing only. Not for static work.
Construction line / mason line: braided, low cost, marking + alignment.
Common service-trade ropes
3/8" nylon: general utility; tool hauling, light rigging. 2,400 lb breaking strength.
1/2" nylon: heavier loads; multiple wraps + light vehicle pull. 5,000 lb breaking.
5/8" nylon: heavy commercial; tow rope; structural rigging. 9,000 lb breaking.
Static rope (PMI, Sterling): 7/16" - 1/2"; arborists + rope access. Different specs.
Knot fundamentals
Working end: the active free end being tied.
Standing end: the long portion attached to load.
Bight: a loop in the rope where it doubles back on itself.
Loop: a closed circle in the rope.
Wrap: rope passes around something.
Tuck: working end passes through a loop OR bight.
Dress + set: arrange the knot neat + cinch tight. A dressed-set knot holds; an undressed knot slips.
Bowline (the king of knots)
Use: secure loop in the end of a rope that won't slip + unties easily after load.
Tie: form a small loop, pass working end up through, around standing, back down through the loop. "Rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, back down the hole."
Best for: securing rope to anchor, rescue, around-the-waist (general).
Limit: not for shock loads OR cyclical loading (can shake loose; secure with stopper knot).
Other essential knots
Two half-hitches: secure rope to post/pole/ring under steady load. Bring rope around object, tuck back through to form half-hitch, repeat. Tarps + light loads.
Clove hitch: temporary attachment to pole/pipe/branch. Wrap, cross over, wrap again, tuck under the cross. Holds steady tension; slips under varying; add stopper.
Taut-line hitch: adjustable loop (tent guy lines, tarp lashings). Working end around standing, around standing twice more inside, finish half-hitch outside.
Truckers hitch: mechanical advantage 3:1 to tighten load. Loop in standing, pass working through anchor + back through loop, pull tight. Cinching truck loads.
Figure-eight: stopper knot. Over, under, around, back through (figure-8 shape). End-of-rope + climber attachment.
Square knot: join two equal-diameter ropes for non-critical use. Right-over-left, then left-over-right. NOT for load-bearing OR unequal ropes.
Sheet bend: join unequal-diameter ropes. Bight in larger rope, smaller through + around + tuck under itself. Better than square knot for joining.
Anchor hitch: rope to ring (boat-style sturdy). Through ring twice, then two half-hitches around standing.
Daisy chain: shorten + organize without cutting (loops pulled through; tug releases).
Hitches vs bends vs knots
Knot: tied in the rope itself.
Hitch: ties rope to something (post, ring, hook).
Bend: joins two ropes together.
Splices (semi-permanent)
Eye splice: forms a permanent loop in rope end. Stronger than knot (90% rope strength).
Short splice: joins two ropes together; doubles diameter at splice.
Long splice: joins two ropes without significantly increasing diameter.
Splicing requires: fid (pointed tool), patience, practice. Strong but takes time.
Stopper knots
Figure-8: most common stopper.
Overhand: simpler; jams hard; harder to untie.
Double overhand (Ashley's stopper): bigger stopper, untie-able.
Working load vs breaking strength
Breaking strength (BS): tensile force at which rope fails.
Working load limit (WLL): typically 1/4 to 1/12 of BS depending on use + dynamic loading.
For lifting: WLL = BS / 10 (heavy safety factor).
For static rigging (lashing, tying down): WLL = BS / 5.
For human life support: WLL = BS / 15 + specific rated rope.
Rope inspection
Before each use:
- Cuts, frays, glazing
- UV degradation (faded color = weakened)
- Stiff/brittle sections (chemical damage)
- Heat damage (melted fibers)
Retire when:
- Visible damage
- Used in fall arrest event (shock-loaded rope is done)
- 10+ years old (UV breakdown even with care)
- Manufacturer recommendation
Common knot mistakes
Wrong knot for load type (cyclic loading on bowline = slip). Square knot for joining (slips under load). Dressing failure (sloppy knot, slips). Wrong rope material (polypropylene for tow = breaks). Skipping stopper knot. Reusing damaged rope. Loading beyond WLL. Knot under load + cannot untie (jams).
Service trade applications
Tool hoist to roof: bowline + bucket + halyard line.
Securing tarp: taut-line OR truckers hitch.
Ladder restraint: clove hitch OR two half-hitches to post + anchor.
Generator OR equipment lift: cradle sling + bowline + lifting tackle.
Pulling cable through wall: tow rope tied to fish tape; running through wall + retrieving.
Tow / pull stuck vehicle: tow rope + appropriate hitch on both vehicles' rated attachment points. Tow strap preferred over rope; sized for vehicle weight.
Truck stock
50 ft 3/8" nylon rope, 100 ft 1/2" nylon rope (general utility), tow strap (rated for vehicle weight), bungee cords assortment, ratchet straps (1" + 2"), carabiners (steel + aluminum), pulleys (single + double for mechanical advantage).
