Husqvarna 572XP Clutch Bearing Replacement Procedure
Why this matters
The Husqvarna 572XP (70.6 cc, X-Torq professional saw) clutch drum runs on a needle bearing that fails predictably between 200 and 400 engine hours of bucking and felling work. Symptoms (chain stops mid-cut, drum wobble, smoke from sprocket area, melted bar oil at the clutch cover) are diagnosed wrong half the time and lead to a parts cannon of new chains, new bars, and new sprockets before the actual fault gets touched. A senior tech with the right tools should replace this bearing in 25 minutes on a tailgate. This is the procedure that gets your saw back on the truck before lunch.
Symptom-to-diagnosis quick table
- Chain stops in the cut, engine still revs: clutch slip; bearing failure or worn shoes
- Loud grinding from clutch area at idle: dry or galled bearing, advanced wear
- Bar oil pooling at clutch cover: clutch drum wobble, oil pump output spinning past the bar inlet
- Sprocket teeth visibly tilted relative to bar groove: bearing collapse, immediate stop
If symptoms include any of the above, do not run the saw further. Continued operation will gouge the crankshaft snout and turn a USD 20 bearing job into a long block teardown.
Parts list
- Husqvarna OEM clutch needle bearing, P/N 503 25 51-01 (or current equivalent; verify against the 572XP IPL)
- Optional but recommended: new clutch drum (P/N varies by sprocket pitch and pin spacing) if old drum shows blueing or scoring on the inner race surface
- New E-clip / washer set (kit, P/N 575 80 80-01 area; verify current)
- Husqvarna grease, dab applied to the new bearing race (Husqvarna LS+ or equivalent NLGI 2 lithium complex)
Source from an authorized Husqvarna dealer or a reputable parts supplier (Bailey's, BSP, Northern Tool). Aftermarket bearings from unknown sources fail in under 100 hours on this saw; the OEM bearing is worth the cost difference.
Tools
- 19 mm flat-head clutch wrench, or Husqvarna piston stop tool P/N 502 71 64-01 plus a T27 Torx
- 13 mm wrench for chain brake band cover
- Small flat screwdriver for E-clip
- Brake cleaner
- Lint-free shop cloth
- Torque wrench, 10 to 50 N-m range
Procedure
- Empty fuel and bar oil tanks. Set chain brake to the engaged position.
- Remove clutch cover (T27 Torx, two nuts on the bar studs typically). Remove bar and chain.
- Engage piston stop. Insert the Husqvarna piston stop through the spark plug hole, hand-tight. Alternatively, jam a 5 mm length of nylon line into the cylinder through the plug hole.
- Remove clutch. The 572XP clutch is left-hand thread. Use the flat-head clutch wrench, rotate clockwise (as viewed from the clutch side) to loosen. Apply firm steady pressure; do not yank.
- Remove clutch drum. Slide the drum off the crankshaft snout. The needle bearing should come with the drum or stay on the crankshaft. Inspect both the inner bore of the drum and the crankshaft snout.
- Inspect the crankshaft snout. If you see any galling, scoring, or blueing on the snout, stop and refer to a Husqvarna dealer. Continuing to install a new bearing on a damaged crank will fail in hours. The snout surface must be smooth and shiny.
- Remove old bearing. Use a small flat screwdriver under the bearing end-cap to pry it off the crankshaft snout. The bearing is a press fit but light; it comes off with minimal force. Do not strike with a hammer.
- Clean. Brake cleaner on a lint-free cloth, wipe the crankshaft snout, the inside of the clutch drum, and the area around the oil pump worm gear. Let solvent flash off.
- Apply grease. A pea-sized dab of Husqvarna LS+ on the crankshaft snout, smeared thin. Do not pack the bearing cavity.
- Install new bearing. Press it onto the snout by hand. It should slide on with light thumb pressure. If it does not, recheck the snout for burrs or paint.
- Install clutch drum. Slide the drum over the bearing, confirm the oil pump worm gear engages the pump arm.
- Reinstall clutch. Left-hand thread; rotate counter-clockwise to tighten. Torque to Husqvarna spec (typically 30 N-m for the 572XP; verify current service manual).
- Remove piston stop.
- Reinstall bar, chain, clutch cover. Tension chain per ANSI B175.1 cold spec (drive links snug in the bar groove, no lift at the bar mid-point).
- Refill fuel and bar oil. Start the saw, run at half-throttle 30 seconds with chain brake engaged, blip throttle to confirm chain spins clean.
Test cuts
Make three controlled bucking cuts on a piece of 8 in to 12 in seasoned hardwood:
- Cut 1: full throttle, listen for clutch chatter. None means engagement is clean.
- Cut 2: half throttle, cut into the wood and back off; chain should stop immediately when revs drop.
- Cut 3: full throttle hold, no cut, watch for bar oil pump output (a thin sling of oil off the bar tip).
If any cut shows chain slip, drum wobble, or no oil sling, recheck step 11 (drum-to-pump engagement) and step 12 (clutch torque).
What kills the bearing
Documented failure modes from Husqvarna service bulletins and field experience:
- Running the saw out of bar oil; the clutch area runs dry and the bearing overheats
- Using a non-OEM clutch drum with a different inner-race diameter
- Operating with a chain that is over-tensioned; the resulting side load on the clutch drum drives the bearing into eccentric load
- Storage with damp wood chips packed into the clutch cavity; the bearing rusts in 48 hours
Service interval
For a working tree-service saw on bucking and felling duty, inspect the clutch bearing every 50 engine hours and replace every 200 to 300 hours regardless of symptom presentation. Cheaper to swap on schedule than to chase a slip mid-job.
