Injection Vs Drench Vs Foliar Uptake Failure Decision Tree
Why this matters
A plant-health-care treatment that does not work is not always the wrong product; very often the active ingredient never reached the target tissue. Each delivery method (trunk injection, soil drench, foliar spray) depends on a different physiological pathway, and each pathway has its own failure modes. Diagnosing "the treatment failed" without identifying which pathway broke down leads to repeating the mistake. This tree isolates whether the failure was uptake (the chemical never got in or never moved) versus efficacy (it got in but did not control the pest). The product label governs everything, so the fix must stay inside what the label allows.
Symptom presentation
The pest or disease persisted, or the tree did not respond, after a labeled treatment. The pattern hints at the broken pathway:
- Trunk injection: spotty canopy response, one side of the canopy responding and not the other, product weeping back out of injection ports, or no response at all.
- Soil drench: no response, especially in dry soil, heavy mulch or thatch, compacted or waterlogged soil, or shortly after application (systemic soil products take weeks to translocate).
- Foliar: control on sprayed surfaces only, new growth or leaf undersides untreated, wash-off after rain, or burn without control.
Quick checks
- Confirm the method, product, dose per DBH or per label unit, and date from the record.
- For injection: was the tree actively transpiring (growing season, adequate soil moisture)? Were ports placed evenly around the circumference at the root flare into functional sapwood? Did product weep out (sign of poor uptake or dysfunctional wood)?
- For soil drench: soil moisture at application and after, presence of thick mulch/thatch that bound the product, soil compaction, and whether enough time passed for translocation (these products move slowly, often weeks).
- For foliar: coverage quality (undersides, new growth), surfactant use per label, rain or irrigation within the rainfast window, and spray timing against the pest's vulnerable life stage.
- Re-confirm the pest/disease ID; an uptake-fine treatment still fails if it targets the wrong organism.

Which method was used?
- Trunk injection: go to step 2.
- Soil drench: go to step 3.
- Foliar: go to step 4.
Injection uptake: was the tree transpiring and were ports correct?
- Not transpiring (drought, dormancy) or product wept out / ports lopsided / drilled into dysfunctional wood: uptake failure. The product did not distribute. Go to Remediation, path A.
- Good conditions and even, well-placed ports, product taken in cleanly, but still no control: efficacy or ID problem, not uptake. Go to step 5.
Soil drench uptake: was soil moisture and timing adequate, and was the product unbound by mulch/thatch?
- Dry, compacted, or waterlogged soil, heavy mulch/thatch binding the product, or too little time elapsed for slow systemic translocation: uptake failure. Go to Remediation, path B.
- Good soil, adequate time, product should have translocated, but no control: efficacy or ID. Go to step 5.
Foliar uptake/contact: was coverage complete and did it stay on long enough?
- Poor coverage (missed undersides/new growth), no surfactant where needed, rain within the rainfast window, or wrong pest life stage: contact failure. Go to Remediation, path C.
- Thorough coverage, rainfast achieved, correct timing, but no control: efficacy or ID. Go to step 5.
Efficacy / identification: is the pest or disease correctly identified and is the product actually labeled and effective against it at this stage?
- Misidentified or product not effective on this organism/stage: re-diagnose and select a labeled-effective product/method. Go to Remediation, path D.
- Correct ID and product, delivered well, but resistance or high pressure: rotate to a different mode of action per label, or accept that some pressures need integrated tactics.
Confirming diagnosis
For injection, even canopy response one season later indicates good distribution; one-sided or absent response with weeping ports indicates the product never moved, confirming uptake failure tied to transpiration or placement. For soil drench, the tell is timing and soil: no response in dry, compacted, or heavily mulched soil, or measured too soon, confirms the slow systemic never translocated. For foliar, control limited to sprayed surfaces with untouched undersides confirms a coverage failure rather than a product failure.
Where the method conditions were all correct and the chemical reached the tissue, the remaining explanations are misidentification, an off-target product, wrong life-stage timing, or resistance, all efficacy issues rather than uptake.
Remediation
Path A (injection uptake): Re-inject during active transpiration with adequate soil moisture (water the tree first in dry conditions), placing ports evenly around the root flare into functional outer sapwood, avoiding dysfunctional or decayed wood. Match dose to DBH per label.
Path B (drench uptake): Re-apply to moist (not waterlogged) soil, pulling back heavy mulch or thatch so the product reaches the root zone, into the root-absorbing area per label; allow the full translocation interval (often several weeks) before judging results. Address compaction if it is blocking root uptake.
Path C (foliar contact): Re-spray with complete coverage including leaf undersides and new growth, add a surfactant if the label calls for one, time it to the pest's vulnerable stage, and apply when no rain is expected within the rainfast period.
Path D (efficacy/ID): Re-diagnose the pest or disease, confirm the product is labeled and effective against that organism and life stage, and if it is, rotate modes of action to manage resistance. Integrate cultural and mechanical tactics where chemical control alone is insufficient.
Every application by every method must follow the EPA-registered product label exactly; the label is the law and governs the site, dose, method, timing, applicator certification, PPE, re-entry, and environmental setbacks. Trunk injection and soil/foliar systemic insecticides can harm pollinators and aquatic life; observe all label restrictions near water, wells, and bloom. Do not increase dose or change method beyond label allowances to compensate for a perceived uptake failure; correct the application conditions instead.
