How to Grind a Tree Stump
Why this matters
Stump grinding is the most profitable per-minute task in tree service. Equipment runs about all-in (machine + diesel + tooth wear + crew); customer pays inch. A 24" stump = revenue in 35-60 minutes of grind time. Plus stumps are usually mentioned at removal time but quoted separately, so they're a clean second-visit upsell.
Equipment options
Self-propelled walk-behind grinders (Vermeer SC30TX, Carlton SP3014, Rayco): 30-35 hp diesel, tracks for soft ground, 3-4 ft cutting wheel. Most popular for residential. new, rental.
Tow-behind / handlebar grinders: smaller, 25 hp, towed behind a truck. Cheaper () but slower + harder to position.
Hydraulic skid-steer attachments (Bradco, FAE): bolt to a Bobcat/CAT skid-steer. Versatile if you already own the host machine; less precise than a dedicated grinder.
Large self-propelled (Vermeer SC1052, Carlton SP8018TRX): commercial stumps 60"+ diameter, 100+ hp. - fleet-only.
For most residential, the SC30TX-class is the sweet spot.
Tools + materials
- Stump grinder appropriate for size
- Replacement teeth + bolts (4-12 teeth wear out per workday on rocky soil)
- Tooth-tightening wrench
- Sharpening stone or new teeth
- Shovel + rake + leaf blower
- Wheelbarrow for chip removal
- Topsoil + grass seed (if offering full restoration)
- Eye protection + face shield (rocks fly), hearing protection, leather gloves, steel-toe boots, chaps
- Call 811 if you haven't already (mandatory before any ground penetration)
Procedure
Step 1: Call 811 + locate utilities
Mandatory in every U.S. state. Free. 48-72 hour notice. Utilities mark gas (yellow), water (blue), electric (red), telecom (orange), sewer/storm (green). Stay 18" from any mark or hand-dig to confirm.
Stumps near a house often sit directly over a buried gas or water service.
Step 2: Prep site
- Walk the area; remove rocks + landscape edging + sprinkler heads in grind zone
- Plywood or tarps on adjacent lawn to catch chip throw
- Move vehicles 30 ft minimum
- Notify customer of expected noise + dust (60-90 min typical)
- Pets indoors
Step 3: Set up grinder
- Position machine to one side of stump
- Lower the cutter wheel just above ground level
- Engage drive + advance to cut depth
- Sweep wheel side-to-side across stump
- Lower 2-4" + repeat sweep
Step 4: Grind to depth
Customer scope determines how deep:
- Lawn grade (basic): 4-6" below grade
- Replant area (better): 8-12" below grade
- Full removal: 18-24" below grade - expensive, rare
For most residential, 6-8" below grade is the standard. Document the depth in the work order.
Step 5: Side roots
Surface roots > 2" diameter within 4 ft of stump are usually included in scope. Follow each root + grind 2-4" below grade. This prevents trip hazards + makes regrowth less likely.
Step 6: Refill or remove chips
Customer choice:
- Leave chips: free; mound settles 30% over 3 months. Tell the customer
- Remove chips + leave hole: lighter scope; customer fills with topsoil + seed
- Remove chips, fill with topsoil, seed grass: full restoration. add
Chips can stay on site for landscape mulch (free customer benefit) - ask before hauling.
Step 7: Cleanup
- Blow + rake chips into pile
- Remove plywood/tarps
- Rake adjacent lawn
- Photograph stump + surrounding area
- Customer walk-through + sign-off
Acceptance criteria
- Stump ground to agreed depth below grade
- Major surface roots within scope ground
- Site swept + raked
- Customer signed + photos retained
- Tooth count + condition recorded for next-job planning
Common pitfalls
- Grinder unleveled: kickback, runaway machine
- Worn teeth + dull: 3x slower + costs more in diesel than new teeth
- Going too deep: hits buried utility or rock; tooth damage + customer dispute
- Throwing chips into windows / cars: lawsuit. Always tarp + position
- No customer walk-through: customer thinks you didn't go deep enough
- Bringing chip-free expectation without scope: customer thought full restoration was included
- Stump near septic tank: grind too deep + you've damaged the tank lid
Safety considerations
- Eye + face protection ALWAYS (rocks accelerate to dangerous speed)
- Hearing protection (88-95 dB at operator position)
- Steel-toe + chainsaw chaps
- Hand-on-deadman: many grinders have a hand-presence safety; never bypass
- Keep crowds out - 30 ft radius minimum
- Refuel COLD only
- Daily tooth inspection + tightening (loose tooth = projectile)
- Beehive in stump? Stop. Reschedule. Stings + grinder is bad combination
Tooth maintenance
A worn tooth changes the geometry + slows the cut dramatically:
- Sharpen or replace every 1-3 stumps in rocky soil
- Sharpen every 4-6 stumps in clean soil
- Tighten ALL tooth bolts at start of every day
- Carry 24+ spare teeth + bolts on every truck
- Re-tip vs replace: re-tipping (carbide brazed) at a shop vs tooth
Most operators run 6-9 months on a set in mixed soil. Tooth wear is the largest consumable cost.
The biggest stump-grinding profit leak isn't pricing - it's not finishing roots within scope. A customer who looks at a ground stump + sees 3 protruding surface roots will leave a 3-star review even if the stump itself is perfect. Spend the extra 10-15 minutes following major roots; the review-rating differential is worth over time.
