Which to Inspect First on a Decline Call, Roots vs Trunk vs Canopy: Sequencing Decision Tree

Why this matters

On a decline call, where you start the inspection changes what you conclude. The canopy is what the customer points at and what is easiest to see, so untrained eyes start there, but the canopy is usually the last place the cause lives. Most chronic decline originates below grade at the roots and root flare, and the canopy symptoms are the downstream report. Start at the canopy and you treat symptoms; start at the roots and work up, and you find the cause. The right sequence is roots/flare first, trunk second, canopy last, with the canopy pattern used only to point you back down. This article is the sequencing logic so a tech walks up to a struggling tree and inspects in the order that actually finds the problem.

Symptom presentation

The canopy tells you where to look, not what the cause is:

  • Uniform whole-canopy thinning and small leaves: chronic root or root-flare problem, soil, or trunk-girdling. Start low.
  • One-sided canopy decline: often a root or trunk-vascular issue on that side, or root loss from grading/trenching on that aspect.
  • Top-down dieback (tips and upper crown first): commonly root-related (water/oxygen at the roots cannot supply the top) or vascular.
  • Sudden wilt after leaf-out: vascular, look at trunk/sapwood and recent root disturbance.
  • Localized to one limb: a trunk/union or single-limb cause, not whole-tree.

Quick checks

  1. Clear leaf litter and soil from the base and find the root flare. A tree with no visible flare ("telephone-pole" base) is buried or has a girdling root, the most common hidden cause of decline.
  2. Walk the full dripline and beyond looking for recent trenching, grade changes, fill soil, compaction, paving, or severed roots.
  3. Sound the lower trunk and buttress roots with a mallet for hollow tone; look for cracks, cankers, seams, conks, and oozing.
  4. Only then read the canopy pattern in detail (which side, top vs bottom, leaf size and color) and use it to direct a second, focused look low.

Isolation tree

Inspect in this fixed order; do not skip to the canopy.

  1. ROOTS / ROOT FLARE (first).

    • Flare buried, girdling root encircling the base, or stem-girdling at the soil line -> primary cause likely found. Note severity.
    • Recent grade change, fill, trenching, compaction, or paving over the root zone -> mechanical/oxygen root damage; correlate the affected canopy side with the disturbed root side.
    • Conks/mushrooms at the base, soft or excavated buttress roots -> root or butt rot; structural concern, not just health.
    • Roots clearly fine and undisturbed -> move up to the trunk.
  2. TRUNK (second).

    • Cankers, seams, frost cracks, included-bark unions, cavities, conks on the stem -> trunk-level cause. Streaking in exposed sapwood points to vascular disease.
    • Mechanical wounds, string-trimmer girdling at the base, or animal damage encircling the trunk -> girdling injury starving the canopy above.
    • Trunk sound and intact -> move up to the canopy.
  3. CANOPY (last).

    • Only now, with roots and trunk cleared, treat a canopy-origin cause: pest/defoliator, foliar disease, drought scorch, or an upper-limb-only issue.
    • Use the canopy distribution to re-check the corresponding roots/aspect you may have under-inspected.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Root-origin confirmed: a buried flare or girdling root with a correlated whole-canopy or matched-side decline; excavating the flare and exposing the girdle ties cause to symptom.
  • Trunk-origin confirmed: a girdling wound, canker, or vascular streaking aligned with the declining portion of the canopy directly above it.
  • Canopy-origin confirmed: roots and trunk are sound, and the canopy shows a specific foliar/pest signature (feeding damage, lesions, defoliator presence) that explains the pattern.
  • A common trap: top-down dieback read as a "canopy disease" when it is really root suffocation from recent fill. Always reconcile the canopy pattern with the root-zone findings before concluding.

Why the sequence is fixed

Techs who start at the canopy waste the visit for a structural reason, not just a procedural one. The canopy is the tree's display of root and trunk function; whatever is happening below grade shows up overhead weeks or seasons later and in a pattern that has already been smeared by the tree's compensation. By the time the canopy reads clearly, the cause has often been active for a year or more. Starting at the roots reverses that lag: the flare and root zone hold the original, undistorted evidence (the buried flare, the girdle, the cut roots, the fill line), and they are present the day you arrive. The canopy pattern is still valuable, but only as a pointer that sends you back to a specific part of the root zone or trunk you might have under-inspected. Inspect low, confirm high.

Practical discipline for the sequence:

  • Budget time at the base. The single most skipped step is clearing soil and mulch to actually find the flare; do it on every decline call, not just the ambiguous ones.
  • Photograph what you expose at the flare and trunk before backfilling or moving on, so the diagnosis is documented and defensible.
  • Resist the customer's pull to "just look at the brown leaves." Acknowledge the canopy, then explain you are checking the cause, not the symptom, and work bottom-up.

Remediation

  • Root/flare cause: root-collar excavation to expose the flare, sever a girdling root per ANSI A300 Part 8 (Root Management) where the tree can tolerate it, relieve compaction/fill, and correct drainage.
  • Trunk cause: address girdling wounds, evaluate cankers and cavities for structural risk; vascular disease gets species-specific management.
  • Canopy cause: target the identified pest or foliar pathogen; prune dead/diseased wood per ANSI A300 Part 1.
  • In all cases, complete a Level 2 risk assessment if decay or structural defects were found.
