Wood Chipper Feed Table Safety SOP

Why this matters

Brush-chipper entanglement is one of the highest-fatality incidents in arboriculture. OSHA, TCIA, and ANSI Z133 all converge on the same root causes: a ground worker leans into the feed table, a loose cuff catches a branch, the branch is pulled by the feed rollers, and the worker follows. This SOP gives the daily inspection, the PPE rules, the feed technique, and the emergency-stop drill that every crew runs through before the first branch goes into the hopper.

Pre-shift inspection

Before the chipper is started for the day:

  1. Feed wheels / rollers - inspect for damage, missing teeth, hydraulic leaks at the actuators. Replace rollers when teeth are worn to less than half their depth.
  2. Anvil and knife clearance - verify clearance is within manufacturer spec (typically 0.040 to 0.060 inch on disc chippers). Knives sharp, mounting bolts torqued to spec.
  3. Bottom feed-stop bar - the horizontal bar at knee height that reverses the feed wheels when bumped. Push it through full travel; rollers must reverse and stop.
  4. Top feed-stop bar - the bar above the hopper that does the same. Same test.
  5. E-stop button - press and verify engine cut.
  6. Discharge chute deflector - locked at the correct angle for the haul truck or stockpile.
  7. Hydraulic hoses - inspect for chafing, leaks, swelling.
  8. Tongue and trailer connection (tow chippers) - hitch latched, safety chains crossed, lights functional.

Document the inspection on a daily checklist. A skipped E-stop test is the failure mode that turns a feed entanglement into a fatality.

PPE rules at the chipper

The ground worker at the feed table wears:

  1. Chainsaw chaps or pants meeting ASTM F1897 - even when not running a saw. Brush-chipper kickback can throw debris back at the operator.
  2. Safety glasses with side shields, plus a face shield for stringy / whippy material.
  3. Hearing protection rated for the chipper's noise level (typically 95 to 105 dBA at the operator position).
  4. Cut-resistant gloves with tight cuffs - no loose flannel cuffs, no fraying sleeves.
  5. Hard hat.
  6. Sturdy work boots with defined heel for footing on uneven ground.

Banned at the feed table per ANSI Z133:

  1. Loose-fitting clothing, scarves, hoodie drawstrings (drawstrings cut off or tucked).
  2. Hand-held tools dangling from belts or wrist lanyards.
  3. Jewelry that can catch (rings, watches, chains).
  4. Long unsecured hair (tucked under hard hat).

Feed technique

The single most important rule: never step onto the feed table with both feet. The infeed-feed safety practice is to stay at the side of the hopper opening, push the branch in butt-first, and step back the moment the feed rollers grab. Never reach into the hopper past the feed-stop bar.

  1. Brush is fed butt-first; the heavy end goes into the feed rollers, the branched / leafy end follows.
  2. Branches that are too long are cut down at the trailer (not at the feed table) before being staged.
  3. Bypass and forked pieces are fed separately - do not bundle a fork with the trunk piece.
  4. The ground worker feeding the chipper has one job at that moment: feeding the chipper. The second worker stages brush from the work area to the feed approach, never crowding the feed worker.
  5. Never feed by reaching across the feed roller centerline. If the piece is too short to feed safely, throw it onto the next long piece going in.

The bottom-stop bar drill

The most-tested safety feature on the chipper. Daily morning drill:

  1. Engine running at idle, feed wheels engaged.
  2. Place a 4-foot branch on the table, feed engaged.
  3. Bump the bottom-stop bar with the back of the hand or a short stick.
  4. Verify feed rollers stop and reverse immediately.

If the bar is sticky, blocked by debris, frozen in winter, or the hydraulics are slow - the chipper is out of service until repaired. This is a no-exceptions rule.

ANSI Z133-2017 Section 8.1.9 prohibits removing or modifying the bottom-feed-stop bar. Tying the bar in the disengaged position because it is "in the way" is a documented citation pattern and has been the root cause of multiple fatal entanglements. If the bar interferes with normal feeding, the feed approach geometry is wrong - re-stage the brush, do not disable the safety.

Last-piece rule

The end of a feeding cycle is the highest-risk moment. The short, irregular pieces left at the end of a pile tempt the worker to push them in by hand. Two rules:

  1. Use the next long piece as a pusher. Brace a long branch behind the short piece and feed the long branch; the short piece goes in ahead of it.
  2. If no long piece remains, throw the short piece aside and let the next job sweep it. Never use a hand or a foot to push the last piece toward the rollers.

Lockout for jam clearing

Branches jam. Clearing them is the second-highest-risk moment after entanglement at the feed table:

  1. Shut down the engine completely (not idle, not in neutral - off, key out).
  2. Wait for the disc / drum to come to a full stop.
  3. Verify rotation has stopped visually through the inspection port.
  4. Then clear the jam.

Disc chippers spinning at 1,200 to 1,800 rpm coast for 30 seconds or longer after shutdown. Never reach into the hopper while the disc is coasting.

End-of-day shutdown

  1. Run the feed table empty until no debris remains in the hopper.
  2. Engage the parking brake / chock the wheels.
  3. Disengage the rotor clutch, kill the engine, remove the key.
  4. Clean the discharge chute and the engine cooling fins (sap and chips on hot manifolds cause shop fires).
  5. Note any maintenance items on the daily inspection sheet for next-morning attention.
