Common Adhesive Tapes Reference

Why this matters

Wrong tape = job redo. Duct tape on actual ducts fails (irony). Electrical tape on plumbing leaks. Painter's tape left up too long bonds + lifts paint. Right tape = clean job + no callback. Field techs buy tape every week + need to know what works where. This is the field card.

Painter's tape

Standard (28-day): blue (Scotch 2090), removes clean from latex paint up to 28 days. Most common. per roll.

Delicate-surface (60-day): yellow / green (Scotch 2080), wallpaper + fresh paint + delicate substrates. Lower tack. .

FrogTape (paint-sealing): light green, polymer activates with paint moisture to seal edge against bleed-through. .

Use: protect trim, ceiling lines, glass, hardware. Avoid: leaving up past spec (bonds + lifts substrate); applying over dust.

Masking tape (general)

Tan crepe paper, low tack, paint stick. Don't use for paint edges (bleeds; not designed). General masking + light packaging + plumbing temporary marking.

Electrical tape

PVC vinyl (Scotch 33+ / 35): rubber/PVC adhesive. UL Listed for 600V. Color codes:

• Black: general electrical insulation
• White: neutral
• Green: ground
• Red / orange / blue / yellow / brown: phase identification (3-phase systems)

Use: insulating splices + wire nuts + identifying conductors. Avoid: UV-exposed outdoor (UV-rated tape needed); permanent splices (wire nuts + heat shrink preferred).

Self-fusing silicone tape

Rescue Tape, Silicone X-treme: stretches + bonds to itself; not to surfaces. Wrapped around pipe/conductor; vulcanizes within minutes. per roll.

Use: emergency pipe leak temporary, water-tight wire splice in damp location, hose repair. Avoid: permanent structural use; high pressure (limit ~30 PSI).

Duct tape

Original cloth duct tape: cotton mesh + rubber adhesive. NOT for HVAC ducts (will fail; UL 181-listed foil tape required). General fix-anything.

Heavy-duty (Gorilla): stronger adhesive, thicker backing. .

Use: temporary repairs, packaging, makeshift cordage, holding things while glue cures. Avoid: actual HVAC ducts (use foil OR mastic), permanent installations.

Foil tape (HVAC)

UL 181A (rigid duct sealing): aluminum foil, acrylic adhesive. CODE-COMPLIANT for HVAC sheet metal. .

UL 181B-FX (flex duct OR rigid + flex joints): different rating; check spec.

Use: duct seam sealing, sheet metal joints, vapor barrier patching.

Mastic tape (HVAC)

Adhesive mastic on backing (Hardcast, Polyken). UL 181-listed. Used for permanent duct sealing, joints, transitions.

Pipe joint tape (PTFE / Teflon)

Standard white: thin PTFE film tape. NPT threaded plumbing connections (water, air, fuel oil). 4 - 6 wraps clockwise on male threads. per roll.

Gas-yellow (heavy density): thicker PTFE rated for natural gas + LP. Code-required for fuel gas piping.

Stainless / industrial: military spec for chemical resistance.

Use: threaded fitting sealing. Don't use: on compression fittings; flare fittings; press-fit (no thread).

Asphalt / roofing tape

Roof flashing tape (Grace Ice + Water Shield, Henry Blueskin): self-adhesive bitumen, applied under shingles + at penetrations. Required at eaves in cold climates.

Acrylic flashing tape (3M All-Weather): weatherproof seal at window flashing + housewrap junctions.

Carpet tape (double-sided)

Indoor: weak tack double-sided; pads + runners + carpet seams. Removes from hard floor without residue.

Outdoor / heavy-duty: stronger; for permanent installation.

Reflective insulation tape

Foil-faced: matches reflective insulation foil. UL 181B if needed for HVAC duct insulation.

Heat-shrink tape (electrical)

Heat-shrink + adhesive combined. Heat melts adhesive + shrinks tape around splice. Permanent waterproof seal.

Hazard / marking tape

Caution (yellow): worksite boundary, low priority.

Danger (red): high priority hazard.

Underground: detectable warning tape buried above utility lines (gas-yellow, electric-red, water-blue).

Reflective marking: ladder rungs, work zone, vehicle visibility.

Specialty tapes

Anti-slip tape: textured grit on adhesive backing. Stairs + ramps.

Foam weather-stripping tape: closed-cell foam adhesive backing. Door + window draft seal.

Thread-locking tape (Loctite tape): specialty; rare in residential service.

Photographic tape (white archival): marking switches + panels permanently.

Magnetic tape: hold items to metal surfaces.

Common tape mistakes

Duct tape on actual ducts (fails; code violation). Wrong tape color on conductors (confuses next electrician). Leaving painter's tape past spec time (bonds; lifts paint). PTFE on compression fitting (no thread to seal). Cheap dollar-store tape (fails warranty work; embarrassing). Tape on dirty/wet surface (won't bond). Stretched tape installed under tension (creeps OR fails). Self-fusing tape on regular surface (won't bond; only fuses to itself).

Truck stock for service business

Plumbing: PTFE white, PTFE yellow gas, electrical (for marking only), silicone fusing.

HVAC: foil 181A, mastic, electrical, painter's, foil-insulation, duct mastic tape.

Electrical: multi-color PVC electrical, heat-shrink, hazard, underground marking.

Painting: painter's blue (multiple widths), FrogTape, masking, plastic-sheet pre-taped.

General handyman: duct (1 roll Gorilla), painter's, electrical, PTFE, double-sided.

Storage + shelf life

Most tapes 2 - 5 years if stored at room temp. UV exposure degrades adhesive. Hot truck in summer reduces life of acrylic + rubber. Replace if no longer tacky.
