Common Unit Conversions + Math Formulas
Why this matters
Field math constant. Customer asks "what's that in pounds?" - quick mental conversion shows expertise. Calculating area for pricing, volume for materials, temperature for adjustments, weight for capacity - every trade needs the basics. This is the field card.
Length + area + volume
Length: 1" = 25.4 mm = 2.54 cm; 1 ft = 12" = 304.8 mm; 1 yd = 3 ft = 36"; 1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1.609 km; 1 m = 39.37" = 3.28 ft; 1 km = 0.62 mi. Pre-calc: 8 ft = 96"; 10 ft = 120"; 12 ft = 144"; 16 ft = 192"; 25 ft = 300".

Roof pitch
- 4/12 (4 in rise per 12 in run): 33% grade

Common job-site calculations
Slab volume (4" × 10' × 12'): 10 × 12 × (4/12) = 40 cu ft; 40 / 27 = 1.48 cu yd. Floor area irregular room: divide into rectangles + triangles, sum. Wall paint (12 × 14 × 8 ft): perimeter 52 ft × 8 ft = 416 sq ft − openings ~ 360 sq ft net = 1 gallon for one coat. Trim for 12 × 14 room: perimeter 52 ft + 10% waste = 57 ft baseboard. 2x4 studs 16" OC for 14 ft wall: 14 / 1.33 = 10.5 + corners = 12 studs + plates = 28 LF.
Trench: L × W × D = cu ft, ÷ 27 = cu yds. 50 × 1 × 2 = 100 cu ft = 3.7 cu yds. Cylindrical hole (fence post 8" × 3 ft): π × 0.167² × 3 = 0.26 cu ft.
Materials estimation: carpet × 1.1 (10% waste); wallpaper single roll covers ~36 sq ft + 10 - 15% for matching; roofing 1 square = 100 sq ft + 10 - 15% waste/ridge/valleys; drywall 4 × 8 sheet = 32 sq ft + 10 - 15% waste; insulation per manufacturer + 10% waste.
Money math
Markup vs margin:
- Markup ≠ margin (common confusion)
Common percentages:
- 5% = 0.05 = 1/20
- 10% = 0.10 = 1/10
- 15% = 0.15 = 3/20
- 25% = 0.25 = 1/4
- 33.3% = 1/3
- 50% = 1/2
Sales tax calculations (varies by state):
- Most US: 5 - 10%

Common math mistakes
Markup vs margin confusion (50% markup is 33% margin). Linear vs square (100 sq ft of carpet ≠ 100 ft of carpet). Cubic confusion. Decimal feet ≠ feet + inches (3.4 ft = 3 ft 4.8 in, NOT 3 ft 4 in). Rounding errors. Forgetting waste factor (10% on most materials).
The single most-impactful field math habit is the WASTE FACTOR addition. Calculate exact materials needed → add 10 - 15% for waste. Customer's flooring job needs 425 sq ft? Order 475 sq ft. Cutting + matching seams + future repairs = need that margin. Without waste factor: trip back to store for more, in restocking, customer waits half-day. With waste factor: extra materials left in customer's garage for future use. Always order with waste; almost never run short.
