Drain, Waste + Vent (DWV) Reference
Why this matters
DWV failures (drain, waste, vent) cause sewer-gas smells + slow drains + gurgling fixtures + customer dissatisfaction. The plumber who understands trap-vent geometry diagnoses + fixes in one trip; the one who guesses returns three times. Code (IPC + UPC) governs DWV with specific rules; this is the field card.
What DWV does
Drainage: gravity carries waste from fixtures to sewer/septic.
Venting: equalizes pressure in the drain system so siphon doesn't suck water out of traps.
Trapping: water seal in P-trap blocks sewer gas from house.
All three must work together.
P-trap (the seal)
Function: water in the curve creates seal between fixture + drain. Sewer gas can't pass through the water.
Required at every fixture (lav, kitchen sink, shower, tub, washing machine, dishwasher, etc.).
Depth of seal: 2" - 4" water depth between dip + crown weir.
Material: PVC, ABS, chrome-plated brass (visible), copper (older).
Size by fixture:
- Lavatory: 1-1/4"
- Kitchen sink: 1-1/2"
- Bathtub / shower: 2"
- Toilet: 3" (integral, not a separate P-trap)
- Washing machine: 2"
- Floor drain: 2" - 3"
Trap arm
Distance from trap weir to vent:
- 1-1/4" trap: max 5 ft
- 1-1/2" trap: max 6 ft
- 2" trap: max 8 ft
- 3" trap: max 10 ft
- 4" trap: max 12 ft
Beyond this distance = siphoning OR back-pressure problems.
Trap arm slope: 1/4" per ft (typical) toward drain.
Vent types
Stack vent: continuation of the soil stack above the highest fixture.
Vent stack: separate vertical vent, ties into the building drain at lowest point + extends through roof.
Wet vent: combines drain + vent function for nearby fixtures (per UPC + IPC restrictions).
Loop vent / island vent: when fixture (like island sink) can't be vented through wall; vents loop down + back up. Complex; per code.
Air admittance valve (AAV): mechanical one-way vent. Allowed in many jurisdictions for retrofits. Codes vary; not always primary vent.
Studor / Sure-Vent (AAV brands): common.
Vent sizing
Per fixture units + total venting load. Per IPC Table 916.1 / UPC.
Common residential sizes:
- 1-1/4" vent: small lav OR single fixture
- 1-1/2" vent: lavatory + shower combinations
- 2" vent: kitchen sink + dishwasher + washer
- 3" vent: toilet + bathroom group
- 4" vent: building stack OR multi-fixture stack
Minimum vent diameter = 1-1/2" OR 1/2 the drain size (whichever larger).
Slope + flow
Standard slope:
- 2" + smaller drain: 1/4" per ft
- 3" + larger: 1/8" per ft
Too steep: water leaves solids behind (poor flow).
Too shallow: stagnant; backup.
Common DWV mistakes
Wrong trap size for fixture (slow drain). Trap arm too long (> max distance = siphoning + sewer gas). Skipping vent (sucks water from trap = gas smell). Wet venting wrong fixtures (code violation). AAV used where prohibited (some jurisdictions don't allow). Vent slopes back toward fixture (water trap in vent = no air flow). Slope wrong direction (water sits, doesn't drain). S-trap (illegal in modern code; siphons water out of trap). Stacked traps (double trapping = vacuum lock; banned).
Common drain problems + DWV causes
Slow drain: clogged fixture OR partially clogged drain pipe. Vent OK.
Slow drain + gurgling: clogged OR insufficient venting (air drawing through fixture).
Sewer gas smell: dry trap (unused fixture), broken seal under toilet, clogged vent.
Backflow / overflow: main sewer clog (line backed up to lowest fixture).
Cleanouts (required for service)
Per IPC: cleanout at top + bottom of vertical drain stack, at base of every horizontal drain run, OR every 100 ft of long horizontal runs.
Sizes: same as the drain pipe.
Access: 18" clearance for snaking (typical).
Sewer drain
Building drain: horizontal drain inside building, slope 1/8" per ft (3" - 4"), discharges to sewer/septic.
Building sewer: outside line to municipal sewer / septic. Slope 1/8" per ft.
Cleanout outside: usually at property line OR within 4 ft of building.
Vent through roof
Per IPC: vent pipe through roof at least 6" above roof surface in cold climates; insect screen optional.
Roof flashing: rubber boot OR lead flashing seals around vent stack.
Setbacks from doors + windows: typically 10 ft horizontal OR 3 ft above the opening.
DWV materials
PVC Schedule 40: most common residential. Solvent-welded with primer + cement. White OR cream.
ABS Schedule 40: black; older or specific jurisdictions. Solvent-welded.
Cast iron (hub-and-spigot OR no-hub): older homes; quieter. Heavier; requires lead-and-oakum OR neoprene gasket.
Copper DWV (Type DWV): older homes; not common new.
PEX: NOT for DWV (drainage); supply only.
Common testing
Hydrostatic test: cap all openings, fill with water 10 ft head pressure, observe 15 min for drops.
Air test: pressurize to 5 PSI, observe gauge.
Pre-occupancy: required before drywall closes walls.
Common DWV repair scenarios
Replacing P-trap: shut off water โ remove old (sliding compression nuts) โ install new (same size).
Snaking main sewer: cleanout access โ 100-ft cable through line. Clear roots + grease + paper.
Hydrojetting: high-pressure water through line; better than snaking for grease + scale. service.
Sewer scope (camera): visual inspection of sewer line interior. .
Sewer relining (CIPP): cured-in-place pipe; new lining inside old pipe. Trenchless repair. .
Trenchless sewer replacement (pipe bursting): pulls new pipe through old. .
Open-trench sewer replacement: dig + replace. (varies with depth + obstacles).
Truck stock for drain work
Drain snake (25 ft + 50 ft), cable + hand crank, cleanout wrench, PVC primer + cement, P-trap assortment (PVC + chrome), assorted PVC fittings (1-1/4" + 1-1/2" + 2"), DWV slip nut pliers, smoke pen (leak detection), small camera (sewer scope tool if certified).

Trap arm distance from trap weir to vent: max per IPC.
Vent above flood level: vent serves the fixture at the level where it drains to.
Cleanout direction: cleanout faces opposite the flow direction of the pipe.
Backwater valve: required where sewer below grade OR backflow risk per IPC.
The single most-useful DWV diagnostic habit is the LISTEN FOR GURGLING when running multiple fixtures. Customer says "drain is slow" - turn on the kitchen sink AND flush the toilet AND run shower while listening. Gurgling at the closest fixture = insufficient venting (air being sucked through that fixture's trap). Bubbling at a different fixture = stack restriction. No gurgling but slow drain = local clog. This 2-minute diagnostic separates a snake job from a vent-clear-out OR sewer scope + repair.
