Paint Coverage + Drying Times Reference

Why this matters

Paint coverage estimation wrong = customer charged too little OR returns trips for more paint. Cure time wrong = customer's furniture stuck to floor OR walls dented before fully cured. Most painting failures trace to: not enough coverage (too thin), not enough cure time (smudges), wrong primer for substrate. This is the field card.

Paint coverage (per gallon)

Standard: 1 gallon covers ~350 - 400 sq ft (smooth), ~300 sq ft (textured), ~250 sq ft (rough/heavy texture). Two coats: double gallons. By surface: drywall smooth 350 - 400, drywall textured 250 - 350, wood smooth 400, wood rough 250 - 300, plaster 300 - 350, brick 100 - 200, concrete block 150 - 250, stucco 100 - 200, metal 350 - 400. Primer coverage similar to topcoat. Heavy-bodied (elastomeric, masonry) much lower 50 - 150 sq ft/gal.

Estimating room paint

Standard 12x14 bedroom: walls 52 ft × 8 ft = 416 sq ft, less 1 door + 1 window (60 sq ft) = ~350 sq ft net. 1 coat = 1 gallon; 2 coats = 2 gallons. 14x18 bedroom: 510 sq ft walls, 2 coats = 3 gallons. 18x22 great room: 640 sq ft, 2 coats = 4 gallons. Don't include ceilings + trim in wall coverage; count separately.

Paint types

Latex (water-based): most common interior, water cleanup, low VOC, recoat 2 - 4 hr, 21-day cure. 100% acrylic latex: durable + flexible. Oil/alkyd: hard durable finish, mineral spirits cleanup, higher VOC, recoat 4 - 24 hr, 30-day cure, best trim + cabinets (less common 2025). Specialty: enamel (high-gloss oil for trim/doors/cabinets), epoxy (floors/garages/industrial), polyurethane (hardwood floors), elastomeric (masonry + cracked surfaces), chalk paint (shabby chic), milk paint (vintage).

Hidden defects: lower sheens hide imperfections; higher sheens show every flaw.

Drying + curing times

Touch-dry (light touch OK):

  • Latex: 1 - 2 hours
  • Oil: 6 - 8 hours

Recoat (apply next coat):

  • Latex: 2 - 4 hours
  • Oil: 16 - 24 hours

Hard dry (normal use):

  • Latex: 24 hours
  • Oil: 48 - 72 hours

Full cure (max hardness):

  • Latex: 14 - 21 days
  • Oil: 30 days

Critical: customer's furniture against wall too soon → paint sticks to furniture + pulls off.

Affects on drying

Temperature:

  • Below 50°F: paint doesn't cure properly (latex); use cold-weather formulation
  • Above 90°F: paint dries too fast; lap marks + texture issues

Humidity:

  • 40 - 60% RH ideal
  • 70%: slow drying

  • < 30%: rapid skin formation; cracking
  • High humidity outdoor + indoor: 24 - 48 hour delays

Air circulation:

  • Fans help drying
  • But fans during paint application = lap marks; only after

Light:

  • Doesn't directly affect drying
  • But low light prevents seeing missed spots

Primer selection

When to prime: bare wood, bare drywall (new), stains/water marks/smoke damage, glossy surfaces (sand + prime), dark-to-light color change, mineral surfaces (brick/masonry/concrete), wallpaper removal residue. Types: latex primer (drywall/wood/masonry - most common); oil primer (stain-blocking, glossy, knots); shellac (BIN, Kilz - smoke + water stains, high stain-blocking); bonding primer (glossy/slick); masonry primer (brick/concrete/stucco); galvanized metal primer. Don't skip primer when needed - fewer topcoats + better adhesion.

Sheen + light hiding

Better hiding = fewer coats needed = lower cost:

  • Premium paints have more pigment + binder
  • Hide darker colors in 1 coat
  • Cheap paints need 3 coats

One-coat colorant:

  • Premium products in light colors
  • Cheaper for time savings
  • Cost premium offset by labor

Application methods

Brush: 70% of jobs use brush for trim + cutting in.

Roller: walls + large areas.

Sprayer:

  • HVLP (high-volume low-pressure): cabinets, trim
  • Airless: large surfaces, ceilings, exteriors
  • Faster; needs masking + overspray management

Roller covers:

  • Smooth (3/16" nap): glass-smooth surfaces
  • Light texture (1/4" - 3/8" nap): smooth drywall
  • Medium texture (1/2" - 5/8" nap): light texture
  • Rough (3/4" - 1" nap): rough surfaces

Multi-coat color changes

Light over dark:

  • Tinted primer
  • 2 - 3 topcoats
  • Premium paint needed

Dark over light:

  • 1 - 2 coats typical
  • Tinted primer optional
  • Easier

White over dark (or vice versa):

  • Always 2 coats
  • Premium paint with one-coat coverage saves time

Common painting mistakes

Insufficient coverage: thin paint shows substrate through; needs additional coat.

Wrong primer: paint peels off glossy or stained surface.

Skipping prep: paint won't adhere to dirty, oily, dusty surface.

Painting in poor conditions: humidity, cold, hot affect cure.

Brush marks: cheap brush, wrong technique, paint setting too fast.

Lap marks: paint partially-dry when next stroke applied.

Insufficient cure before furniture/use: damage + redo.

Using gloss without sanding: previous gloss layer won't accept new paint.

Paint storage + lifespan

Unopened cans:

  • 2 - 5 years typical
  • Store at 45 - 90°F (don't freeze; don't bake)

Opened cans:

  • 6 months - 2 years
  • Reseal lid; small amount water on top of latex paint prevents skin

Frozen paint:

  • Latex: ruined; thaw + check texture (likely useless)
  • Oil: usually OK after thaw

Discoloration / separation: stir thoroughly; if not uniform after extensive stir, ruined.

The single most-valuable paint calculation habit is the EXTRA-10%-PURCHASE rule. Calculate exact paint needed → buy 10% more. Customer's furniture moves later + needs touch-up; paint store may not have exact tint; future repairs need same paint. Storing labeled cans in basement OR garage with the customer's name + room is high-leverage customer service. Most jobs need 5 - 10% more paint than precisely calculated; ordering tight = return trip. Order with margin + customers don't see "I need more paint" mid-job.
