Thermostat Types + Wiring Reference

Why this matters

Thermostat install + diagnosis takes 60% of HVAC service calls. The 24V control wires + their function are misread constantly. Wrong wiring = no heat, no cool, blown fuse, OR fried control board. The tech who can read any thermostat wiring chart cold saves the customer + the equipment. This is the field card.

Standard 24V control wiring color code

Color Function
R 24V power (hot) - typically Rh (heat) + Rc (cool) jumped, OR separate
C 24V common (neutral) - required for power to thermostat (smart stats)
W Heat call (1st stage)
W2 Heat call 2nd stage (heat pump, 2-stage furnace)
Y Cool / compressor call (1st stage)
Y2 Cool 2nd stage (multi-stage)
G Indoor blower (fan)
O Reversing valve energized in COOL (most brands: Carrier, Trane, Goodman)
B Reversing valve energized in HEAT (Rheem heat pump rare)
L Heat pump emergency status indicator
E Emergency heat call (auxiliary)
AUX Auxiliary heat (often = W2)
S Outdoor sensor (some smart stats)
Rh Heat circuit 24V power (when separated from Rc)
Rc Cool circuit 24V power (when separated from Rh)

Don't rely on color alone - wires get re-purposed. Always verify with manufacturer wiring diagram.

Common system configurations

Conventional gas furnace + AC: R, C, W, Y, G (5 wires). W = furnace heat call; Y = AC compressor + outdoor unit; G = blower.

Heat pump (single-stage): R, C, W (aux heat), Y (compressor), G (blower), O (reversing valve cool) = 6 wires. O energized in COOL for most brands; W in heat pump = AUXILIARY heat (strip heater backup).

Heat pump (dual fuel): R, C, W (gas heat), Y (compressor), G, O, W2 (aux heat) = 7 wires. Outdoor temp determines which heats first (HP above 35°F; gas below).

2-stage system: R, C, W, W2, Y, Y2, G = 7 wires. Two stages of heat OR cool.

Communicating system (Carrier Greenspeed, Trane ComfortLink): often only 4 wires (R, C, +/- communication). Proprietary wiring; not standard 24V on/off.

C-wire requirement (smart thermostats)

C-wire provides continuous 24V power for smart stats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell T9/T10). Older systems often lack it; two solutions: run new wire from air handler to stat location (5-conductor → 6 OR 8-conductor), OR install a Power Extender Kit (Ecobee PEK, Honeywell Power Adder) at air handler that converts existing 4 wires to 5 at stat. Don't omit C-wire thinking battery suffices - battery dies + customer comes back.

Reversing valve + aux/emergency heat (heat pump)

O wire energizes the reversing valve to put system in COOL mode (most brands). Trane/American Standard/older Rheem some use B (energized in HEAT) - verify equipment. Default off (no signal) = HEAT position. Wrong O/B = heat-cool reversed.

Aux heat (W2 OR AUX) runs WITH heat pump when outdoor cold OR demand high; emergency heat (E) runs INSTEAD of heat pump. Most stats wire AUX + E to W2.

Common thermostat brands

Honeywell: Round, Pro 6000/8000, T-series, RTH series; T9/T10 smart requires C-wire; most accept 5 - 7 wire conventional + heat pump. Ecobee: 4, 5, Lite - 24V; requires C-wire OR Power Extender Kit (PEK). Google Nest: 3rd Gen, E, Learning - 24V; C-wire highly recommended; battery backup runs short without C. Carrier / Bryant: Comfort, Edge, Performance, Infinity (proprietary 4-wire communicating using ABCD codes). Trane / American Standard: Comfortlink II communicating proprietary.

Diagnostic basics

No power to stat: check 24V at R + C with multimeter; replace transformer OR fuse if no voltage. No heat call: jumper R to W at stat - heat fires? Stat faulty. No? Problem downstream. No cool call: jumper R to Y - compressor + outdoor fire? Stat faulty. Fan running constantly: G stuck OR fan switch ON. No fan with heat call: G call missing OR blower failed. Blown 24V fuse (3A glass on furnace board): short in low-voltage wiring; trace + fix before replacing fuse repeatedly.

Common wiring mistakes

Wrong wire on wrong terminal (Y on W = cool when calling heat). Missing C-wire (smart stat won't power). Jumpers wrong (Rh + Rc need separation for 2-transformer systems). Stripping too much wire (shorts to next terminal). Twisting wires together at terminal instead of into stripped + clamped. Reversing O / B (heat pump reverse mode). Loose wire (intermittent operation; hard to diagnose). Crossed wires (calls overlap; constant cycling).

Furnace control board wiring (typical low-voltage terminals)

Same labels as stat. Wires from stat connect at corresponding terminals. Y also typically continues to outdoor unit (contactor coil).

Outdoor unit wiring (AC + heat pump)

Contactor coil: 24V signal from Y energizes contactor coil → 240V supplied to compressor + fan.

Defrost control (heat pump): board controls defrost cycle; outdoor sensor + temp logic.

Stage logic

1st stage = light demand (small temp delta).

2nd stage = high demand (big delta OR 1st stage can't catch up).

Smart stats: learn the building + adjust 1st vs 2nd stage timing.

Heat pump locking out aux

Smart heat pumps lock out aux heat above a certain outdoor temp (e.g., > 40°F) to maximize efficiency. Customer complaint "aux runs all the time" often = lockout setting OR balance point off.

Common thermostat replacement workflow

Photo existing wiring BEFORE removing. Label each wire with included stickers. Remove old stat. Confirm wire colors match function (multimeter R-C 24V). Mount new stat baseplate. Connect labeled wires to corresponding terminals. Restore power; configure to match system type. Test all functions (heat, cool, fan, aux if heat pump). Customer demo (smart-stat features).

Configuration after mounting

System type (gas/electric/heat pump/dual fuel), stages (heat 1 OR 2; cool 1 OR 2), O/B reversing valve direction, aux heat (gas OR electric strip + balance point), fan type (gas delays after burn; electric immediate), cycle rates (cph; higher = more precise temp).
