Knots + Rigging for Trades

Why this matters

Tradesmen tie knots dozens of times per week - securing ladders, hoisting equipment, tying down loads, securing PPE. Wrong knot slips at wrong moment = equipment falls, customer property damaged, worker injured. The handful of knots every tech should know are worth mastering. This is the field card.

Common workplace knots

Bowline

The most-useful tradesman's knot. Forms a fixed loop that doesn't slip OR tighten under load.

Use:

  • Hoisting tools / equipment
  • Tying off lanyards
  • Creating handle on rope
  • Securing to fixed point

Tying: "rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, back into the hole."

  1. Make small loop in rope (hole)
  2. Pass working end up through hole (rabbit out)
  3. Around standing part (around tree)
  4. Back down through hole (back in)
  5. Tighten

Properties: doesn't slip under load; easily untied even after heavy use.

Clove hitch

Quick attachment to a post / cylinder. Adjustable.

Use:

  • Tying off to post / scaffolding
  • Temporary anchor
  • Beginning of lashing

Tying:

  1. Wrap rope around post
  2. Cross over standing part + back around
  3. Tuck working end under last wrap
  4. Pull tight

Properties: easily adjustable; can slip if not loaded properly; OK for temp + light loads.

Half hitch

Simplest hitch. Often used in pairs (two half hitches) for security.

Use:

  • Finishing knots
  • Securing tag end after main knot
  • Tying off light loads

Tying (two half hitches around post):

  1. Pass rope around post + back over itself
  2. Make first half-hitch
  3. Make second half-hitch
  4. Tighten

Trucker's hitch

Tightens loads on flatbed / truck bed. Creates mechanical advantage.

Use:

  • Tying down equipment on truck
  • Securing materials
  • Pulling things taut

Tying:

  1. Tie loop in middle of rope (slip-knot loop)
  2. Pass working end around anchor
  3. Run through loop
  4. Pull to create mechanical advantage
  5. Tie off with half hitches at loop

Properties: 2:1 mechanical advantage; doesn't loosen with load.

Figure 8 (and Figure 8 follow-through)

Strong + reliable stopper knot + can be used to attach rope to harness.

Use:

  • End-of-rope stopper
  • Climbing harness attachment (Figure 8 follow-through)
  • Anchor on tree / structure

Tying:

  1. Bight + cross over
  2. Around + back through

For follow-through (attach to harness / anchor):

  1. Tie figure 8 with loop
  2. Pass tail through anchor
  3. Trace original figure 8 with tail going back through

Properties: strong + reliable; doesn't slip; can be tied + untied repeatedly.

Taut-line hitch

Adjustable hitch that holds under load + allows adjustment without untying.

Use:

  • Guy lines on tents
  • Adjustable tie-downs
  • Lashing where length needs adjustment

Tying:

  1. Pass rope around anchor
  2. Two half-hitches close to anchor side
  3. Then one half-hitch farther down
  4. Adjusts by sliding

Properties: holds when loaded; slides when not.

Sheet bend

Joins two ropes of different sizes.

Use:

  • Joining ropes
  • Extending working rope

Tying:

  1. Bight in larger rope
  2. Pass smaller rope up through bight
  3. Around larger rope
  4. Tuck under itself

Square knot

Joins two ropes of same size. Common but limited use; can slip.

Use:

  • Joining shoelaces
  • Light-duty rope joining
  • First-aid bandages

Tying:

  1. Right over left
  2. Left over right
  3. Tighten

Warning: NOT for life-safety load. Slips under unequal load.

When NOT to use these knots

Climbing / fall protection: use OSHA-rated harness + lanyard + lifeline; NOT improvised knots.

Critical hoisting (people, heavy machinery): use rated slings + shackles, not knots.

Long-term load: knots loosen over time; use clamps OR mechanical fittings.

Rope selection

Type:

  • Nylon: stretches, strong, abrasion-resistant; rope of choice for most trades
  • Polypropylene: light, floats, NOT UV-stable
  • Manila: natural fiber, traditional, lower strength than synthetic
  • Polyester (Dacron): low stretch, UV-stable
  • Kevlar / Aramid: extreme strength, no stretch, expensive

Diameter:

  • 1/4": light tasks, paracord
  • 3/8": general utility, most tradesman rope
  • 1/2": heavy lifting, climbing (specific climbing rope)
  • 5/8": large items, rigging
  • 3/4": industrial lifting

Strength: WLL (Working Load Limit) = 1/5 of breaking strength typically. Always verify rope spec.

Common rigging hardware

Hooks: latched safety hook for any lifting; never use open hook.

Shackles: bow OR D shackle; rated load.

Clamps: wire rope clamps (must use 3+ for wire rope).

Eye splices: factory or hand-spliced loop; stronger than knot.

Pulley / block: mechanical advantage; multiple per lift if needed.

Carabiner: rated; auto-locking for safety.

Lifting safety

Inspect rope before every use:

  • Cuts, fraying, glazing, kinking
  • Discoloration (heat exposure)
  • Mildew (rotted natural fiber)

Inspect hardware:

  • Hooks: latch works, no cracks
  • Shackles: pin intact, no bent
  • Slings: no cuts OR severe wear

Rigging principles:

  • Identify center of gravity
  • Choke / basket / vertical hitch as appropriate
  • Tag line to control
  • Clear path; no one under load
  • Slow + steady; not sudden moves

Securing a ladder

Tying off:

  • Top of ladder to fixed anchor (gutter strap, rope around chimney)
  • Bottom of ladder anchored
  • Bowline at top for loop; clove hitch on anchor

Foot of ladder:

  • Person spotting at base (best)
  • Block + tie to base structure
  • Spikes / stabilizer feet

Tying down loads (truck / trailer)

Tools:

  • Ratchet straps (preferred; controlled tension)
  • Bungees (light loads only; can fail violently)
  • Rope: requires knot-tying skill

Process:

  1. Center load (over axle)
  2. Forward-facing tie-down + rear-facing tie-down (prevents shifting)
  3. Cross-tie if asymmetric
  4. Trucker's hitch for rope tie-downs
  5. Re-check after 50 miles

Common knot mistakes

Wrong knot for load: square knot for hoisting (slips).

Insufficient turns: 2 wraps instead of 4 on knot needing 4.

Not tightening: loose knot slips under load.

Tied around sharp edge: rope cuts under tension.

Reusing damaged rope: known-damaged rope still in use.

No backup safety: single point of failure on critical load.
