Cloudy Glasses and Spotting: Hardness vs TDS vs Silica from a Single Observable Decision Tree

Why this matters

Cloudy glassware out of the dishwasher is a deceptively layered complaint. It can be hardness scale (wipes off, returns with hard water), high TDS deposits (a general film), silica spotting (stubborn, resists softening), or permanent etching (irreversible glass damage from over-soft, over-hot, over-dosed wash conditions). The single observable, "the glasses are cloudy," needs to be broken down by one decisive test: does the cloudiness wipe off or rub off with a mild acid, or is it permanent? That fork plus a TDS and hardness read separates a softener-fixable problem from a silica or etching problem the softener will never solve, and prevents you from promising a result a softener cannot deliver.

Symptom presentation

Have the customer (or you) examine the glasses dry. Note whether the film is uniform haze, scattered spots, or a rainbow/iridescent sheen. Test whether it wipes off with a finger, dissolves with a few drops of white vinegar (mild acid), or stays put. Ask whether the home has a softener (and whether glasses got worse after it was installed, a tell for etching) and whether it is on a well or municipal supply. Iridescent, rainbow, permanent cloudiness that appeared after going soft is etching, not a deposit.

Quick checks

  • Vinegar test: a drop of white vinegar on the film. If it fizzes/clears, the deposit is carbonate (hardness/scale). If nothing happens and it wipes off, suspect TDS film. If nothing happens and it will not wipe off, suspect silica or etching.
  • Hardness titration on the dishwasher's feed water (treated, if softened). High hardness equals scale spotting.
  • TDS meter reading. High TDS leaves a general mineral film even when hardness is controlled.
  • Silica test (lab) if the deposits resist acid and softening; silica is common in certain geologies and is not removed by ion-exchange softening.
  • Inspect for etching: hold the glass to light at an angle; permanent cloudiness with a rainbow sheen and frosted feel is etched glass.

Isolation tree

Branch 1, film WIPES OFF or dissolves in vinegar. This is a deposit, not damage. Sub-branch hardness: if hardness titrates high (the water is not softened or the softener is failing), it is carbonate scale spotting; fix the softening (commission/repair the softener, target near 0 to 1 GPG). Sub-branch TDS: if hardness is already low but TDS is high, the film is from total dissolved solids drying on the glass; a softener will not lower TDS. The fix is a rinse aid plus, for spot-free results, point-of-use treatment that lowers TDS for that use.

Branch 2, film does NOT dissolve in acid and does NOT wipe off, but the glass is smooth (not frosted). Suspect silica. Silica spotting is hard, glassy, and unaffected by softening or acid. Confirm with a lab silica test. Softening will not help; removal requires reverse osmosis or other silica-capable treatment for the dishwasher feed or as point-of-use.

Branch 3, cloudiness is PERMANENT, iridescent/rainbow, glass feels frosted, and it got worse after softening. This is etching, irreversible glass corrosion, not a water deposit. Causes are the combination of soft water plus too much detergent, water too hot, and pre-rinsing that strips the detergent's intended buffering. The softener is not "broken"; the wash chemistry is too aggressive. Remedy is operational: reduce detergent dose, lower wash temperature, stop pre-rinsing, and use a phosphate-free detergent appropriate for soft water. Damaged glasses cannot be restored.

Branch 4, SPOTS only (not haze), water is soft and TDS moderate. Often a rinse-aid/drying issue rather than a treatment problem. Add or increase rinse aid; spotting from drying water droplets is normal at moderate TDS without a sheeting agent.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm hardness scale when the vinegar test fizzes/clears the film and hardness titrates high; correcting softening eliminates new spotting. Confirm TDS film when hardness is low, TDS is high, and the film is a general haze that wipes off but returns. Confirm silica when the deposit resists both acid and softening and a lab silica result is elevated. Confirm etching when the cloudiness is permanent, iridescent, frosted to the touch, and correlated with going soft plus aggressive wash conditions.

Remediation

  • Hardness scale: commission or repair the softener; verify treated hardness near 0 to 1 GPG.
  • TDS film: rinse aid for general use; point-of-use RO for spot-free glassware where TDS is the driver.
  • Silica: reverse osmosis (point-of-use or dedicated to the dishwasher feed); softening alone is ineffective.
  • Etching: operational fix only (less detergent, lower temperature, no pre-rinse, soft-water-appropriate detergent); educate that existing etched glass is permanent.
  • Spotting only: add/increase rinse aid.
