Iron and Manganese Treatment in Residential Water
Why this matters
Iron and manganese are among the most common water-quality complaints in well-water and some municipal supplies. The customer sees orange-brown staining on plumbing fixtures, sinks, toilets, and laundry; the water tastes metallic; appliances foul faster than expected. Standard water softeners handle low levels of dissolved iron but fail at higher concentrations or when iron is in other forms. Identifying the iron species correctly and matching treatment to it is the foundation of effective service.
When to use this procedure
- Customer reports orange / brown staining on fixtures, laundry, or surfaces
- Customer reports metallic taste
- Test results show iron > 0.3 mg/L (EPA secondary standard threshold)
- Test results show manganese > 0.05 mg/L (EPA secondary standard threshold)
- New construction or new well water testing
Iron forms in water
Iron in water exists in different forms requiring different treatments:
Ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) - clear water iron:
- Dissolved in water; not visible
- Water appears clear when drawn but stains over time
- Most common in well water
- Treatable by water softener at low levels (typically up to 1-3 mg/L)
- Treatable by oxidation systems at higher levels
Ferric iron (Fe³⁺) - red water iron:
- Already oxidized; visible as orange-brown particles or color
- Water appears orange when drawn
- Result of ferrous iron being exposed to oxygen
- Requires filtration (mechanical removal)
- Water softener alone insufficient
Bacterial iron - iron bacteria:
- Iron + biological growth
- Slimy reddish-brown deposits in toilet tanks, pipes
- Water often smells musty or has a "swampy" smell
- Requires chlorination + filtration
- Difficult to fully eliminate
Colloidal iron:
- Very fine iron particles suspended in water
- Doesn't settle out
- Difficult to filter; requires special media
Organic-bound iron:
- Iron complexed with humic / tannic acids
- Water has tea-like brown color
- Requires special chemistry
Identification of the iron form is the diagnostic. Different forms need different treatment.
Identifying the form (field test)
When the customer presents:
- Draw a fresh sample into a clean glass:
- Clear when drawn, becomes cloudy or orange over hours: ferrous iron (dissolved)
- Orange when drawn, settles out: ferric iron (already oxidized) OR colloidal
- Brown to tea-colored: organic-bound iron OR tannins
- Particles, slime visible: bacterial iron OR colloidal
- Smell test:
- Sulfur / rotten egg: hydrogen sulfide gas (often associated with iron / manganese)
- Musty / swampy: bacterial iron
- Metallic: high dissolved iron
- Look at toilet tank:
- Reddish slime: bacterial iron
- Black staining: manganese
- Orange staining: standard iron
- Check the water heater:
- Sediment buildup: iron, manganese, or hardness contributors
Lab testing
For accurate diagnosis:
- Submit a water sample to a certified lab
- Test for:
- Total iron
- Ferrous (dissolved) iron
- Manganese
- pH
- Hardness
- Total dissolved solids
- Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
- Some labs offer "well water panels" with all relevant parameters
- Customer's state often has a Cooperative Extension or health department that offers low-cost testing
Lab results determine treatment specifications.
Treatment options
Water softener (for low ferrous iron)
For dissolved iron up to 1-3 mg/L:
- The water softener resin holds iron similar to hardness
- Iron displaces sodium during the service cycle
- Regeneration removes iron with the salt brine
Limitations:
- Only works for ferrous (dissolved) iron
- Higher concentrations exceed the resin's capacity
- Iron bacteria foul the resin
- Manganese causes similar fouling
Many "water softeners" sold for iron removal are inadequate when iron exceeds 1-2 mg/L. A real iron treatment system is often needed.
Oxidation + filtration
For higher iron levels (3+ mg/L) or when softener proves inadequate:
Process:
- Inject oxidizer (air, chlorine, potassium permanganate, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide) into the water
- Iron oxidizes from Fe²⁺ (dissolved) to Fe³⁺ (particulate)
- Filtered out of the water
Common systems:
- Air injection (aeration): introduces atmospheric air to oxidize iron; works for iron up to 5+ mg/L
- Chlorine injection: pump injects metered chlorine; oxidizes iron and manganese; also disinfects (kills bacterial iron)
- Manganese greensand: special filter media oxidizes iron via potassium permanganate regeneration; effective for both iron and manganese
- Birm media: catalyzes iron oxidation using dissolved oxygen in the water (requires DO present)
- Ozone: strongest oxidizer; injects ozone gas; comprehensive treatment
The filter then removes the oxidized iron particles.
Sequential treatment
For complex water (multiple problems):
- First stage: oxidation
- Second stage: filtration
- Third stage: water softener (for hardness)
- Fourth stage: RO or carbon filter (for taste / specific contaminants)
Each stage addresses a specific issue. The order matters.
Iron bacteria treatment
For bacterial iron:
- Shock chlorinate the well (see Well Chlorination article)
- Repeat as needed (bacterial iron often recurs)
- Install chlorine injection system for ongoing treatment
- Filter the chlorinated water
- Carbon filter at the point of use to remove chlorine taste
This is a more involved scope.
Manganese-specific treatment
Manganese:
- EPA secondary standard 0.05 mg/L
- Black staining when present
- Treatable by oxidation + filtration (similar to iron)
- Manganese greensand is particularly effective for combined iron + manganese
- Higher concentrations may require pH adjustment (manganese oxidation is pH-dependent; pH above 8 is more effective)
