pH Rises After Neutralizer Rebed Overshoot Decision Tree
Why this matters
You rebed an acid neutralizer with fresh calcite (or calcite plus a magnesium-oxide blend) and the post-treatment pH comes back too high - 8.5, 9, sometimes higher - instead of the 7-7.5 you wanted. An overshooting neutralizer is not harmless: high pH drives scale, dries skin, can push the water out of the secondary aesthetic range, and on a calcite/Corosex blend can hover above 9 if the blend or the contact time is wrong. The overshoot right after a rebed almost always traces to one of a handful of causes - too much Corosex/MgO in the blend, low flow letting water sit in fresh, high-surface-area media, or a media that is simply more aggressive than the old depleted bed the customer was used to. This tree isolates which so you correct the blend or the operating conditions instead of dumping and starting over blind.
Symptom presentation
- Post-neutralizer pH reads high (8.5 to 9-plus) after a recent rebed, where the old bed produced acceptable pH.
- May come with new scale, slippery-feeling water, or cloudiness.
- Often worst at low-demand times (overnight, then the morning first draw) when water dwells longest in the tank.
The "after rebed" timing matters: fresh calcite has far more reactive surface than a depleted, channeled, partially dissolved old bed, so the same tank that read 7.2 last year can overshoot at 8.8 the week after a rebed.
Quick checks
- Measure raw (pre-neutralizer) pH and post-neutralizer pH. Confirm the rise is from the neutralizer, not a softener or chlorinator change made the same day.
- Note the media installed: straight calcite (raises pH gently, self-limiting near 7-8), or a calcite + Corosex/MgO blend (much more aggressive, can push past 9 if over-blended).
- Check flow/contact time: low household demand plus an oversized or freshly loaded bed equals long dwell and more dissolution.
- Confirm raw water pH and CO2/aggressiveness - very aggressive raw water needs the blend; mildly aggressive water overshoots on a blend.

Is the post-neutralizer pH high at all flows, or only after long dwell?
- High only after the water has sat (overnight, low flow), normal during active use: this is dwell-time overshoot. Reduce dwell - right-size the bed, or accept that the first morning draw reads high and runs down. If on a calcite-only bed, this is usually tolerable; on a blend, reduce the blend (step 3).
- High at all flows including active use: continue to step 2.
What media/blend was installed at the rebed?
- Straight calcite overshooting above ~8.3 at active flow is unusual because calcite is largely self-limiting near saturation; if it reads 9, suspect contamination, a wrong media, or extreme dwell. Re-verify the media.
- A calcite + Corosex (magnesium oxide) blend reading 9-plus: the Corosex fraction is too high for this raw water. Corosex is far more soluble and reactive than calcite and drives pH up fast. Go to step 3.
Is the Corosex/MgO fraction appropriate for the raw water aggressiveness?
- Mildly aggressive raw water (pH 6-6.5, modest CO2) given a heavy Corosex blend will overshoot. Reduce or eliminate the Corosex; many mildly acidic waters need calcite only. Reblend to a lower MgO percentage and re-test.
- Strongly aggressive raw water (pH below 6, high CO2) that genuinely needs the blend but still overshoots: the blend is right but the bed is oversized or dwell is long - go to step 4.
Is the bed oversized or the flow too low for the household?
- An oversized tank or very low demand gives long contact time, so even a correct media over-corrects. Down-size the bed for the actual demand, or note that the overshoot will moderate as the fresh media seasons (the most reactive fines dissolve and rinse out over the first weeks).
- Sized correctly: continue to step 5.
Did the rebed include enough rinse, and is the media settling correctly?
- Fresh calcite carries fines that dissolve fast and spike pH until rinsed. Backwash thoroughly to remove fines. Re-test pH over the following days; a fresh bed commonly runs high for a week or two then settles. If it does not settle, the blend (step 3) is the cause.
Confirming the diagnosis
Confirm a blend-overshoot when raw water is only mildly aggressive yet a Corosex-heavy blend was installed and active-flow pH reads above 8.3. Reblending to calcite-only (or a low MgO fraction) and re-testing should bring active-flow pH back into 7-8.
Confirm a dwell/break-in overshoot when the high readings track long-dwell first draws and active-use pH is closer to target, and when readings trend down over the first one to two weeks after a thorough backwash. Log pH daily for two weeks; a downward trend toward 7.5-8 confirms break-in, not a chronic fault.
Remediation
- Reblend to the correct calcite-to-Corosex ratio for the measured raw aggressiveness; many waters need calcite only.
- Right-size the bed to the household demand to cut excessive contact time.
- Backwash thoroughly after a rebed to flush reactive fines.
- Where high first-draw pH persists on a needed blend, advise running the tap briefly or accept the self-limiting calcite-only approach.
- If high pH then drives scale, evaluate downstream softening rather than under-neutralizing aggressive water.
