RO Storage Tank Pressure Falls After Fill Decision Tree

Why this matters

A residential reverse osmosis system with a slow faucet, that fills the tank but never delivers more than a trickle, has a tank-side problem - not a membrane problem. Customers complain about wait time at the faucet, techs replace membranes that were fine, the tank stays at low pressure, the customer escalates. The decision tree below isolates the tank bladder, the air pre-charge, the tank-side check valve, and the tank-fitting setup so the customer's faucet runs at the rated flow the unit is supposed to deliver.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the RO faucet runs a slow stream that fades to a drip within 30 seconds. Tank feels heavy and full when picked up. System has been working for 1 to 5 years. No obvious leaks. Membrane production is on time per the spec drain-to-permeate ratio.

Quick checks

  1. Disconnect the faucet from the tank line and run the line directly into a measuring jug. A line that delivers fast confirms the slow faucet is downstream (post-carbon polish stage clogged, faucet stem failing, or 1/4 inch line kinked). A line that delivers slow at the tank itself confirms the tank.
  2. Check the tank air pre-charge with the tank empty. Disconnect the tank from the system, open the tank valve to drain it completely, then check the air pre-charge at the Schrader valve. Spec is 5 to 8 psi empty.
  3. Inspect the tank fitting for restriction. The tank check valve embedded in the fitting can clog.
  4. Look at tank age. Standard residential RO tanks (3.2 gallon) have a 7 to 10 year typical bladder life. Older tanks fail at the bladder seam.
  5. Estimate produced volume per fill cycle by closing the tank for 24 hours and reopening; the volume should be near the tank's rated capacity.

Isolation tree

Step 1: Empty the tank by opening the RO faucet and letting it drain to a drip. Disconnect the tank from the system. Pick up the tank and shake. A tank that gurgles like there is still water inside (despite a fully drained line) has a flooded bladder - water is on the air side because the bladder ruptured. Move to bladder failure.

Step 2: If the empty tank is silent, check the Schrader valve air pre-charge with the tank disconnected and drained. Spec is 5 to 8 psi empty for most residential RO tanks. Lower than 5 psi reduces faucet flow and leaves residual water at end of draw. Higher than 10 psi reduces total useful capacity. Pump to spec with a hand pump (do not use a compressor; over-pressure damages the bladder).

Step 3: Reconnect tank. Allow full fill. Open faucet, measure flow at peak. A pre-charge-corrected tank delivers 0.5 to 1.0 gpm flow during the first portion of the draw. If flow is still slow and the tank is full, suspect the tank check valve in the elbow fitting. Inspect and clean.

Step 4: If flow is still slow with tank check valve clear, suspect the tank manifold or the 1/4 inch line between tank and faucet. Pinches behind the cabinet, kinks at fittings, or a leftover orange flow restrictor mistakenly installed in the line are all common.

Step 5: If air-pre-charge held and reset to spec at empty but the air keeps escaping over weeks, the Schrader valve is failing. Replace the valve or replace the tank.

Confirming diagnosis

Bladder failure confirms when the empty tank gurgles or when water sprays from the Schrader valve. Pre-charge fault confirms when the empty-tank air pressure is off-spec and re-pressurization restores flow. Tank check valve confirms when bench-clearing the elbow fitting restores flow. Line restriction confirms when bypassing the tank line restores flow. Schrader leak confirms when the spec pre-charge bleeds within days.

Remediation

For bladder failure: replace the tank. Bladders are not field-serviceable on standard residential RO tanks.

For pre-charge: pump to 5 to 8 psi at full empty using a low-volume hand pump or a bicycle pump with a quality gauge. Check pre-charge any time service includes a membrane or filter change.

For tank check valve fouling: remove the elbow fitting, clear debris (often calcium or carbon fines), reinstall with new ferrule and pressure-test for leaks.

For line restriction: rerun the 1/4 inch line with no kinks, no extra restrictors, and clean push-fit terminations.

For Schrader leak: replace the valve core (where field-replaceable) or replace the tank.

After any tank work, fill, draw, and refill twice to bleed entrained air. Document delivered flow at full tank, half tank, and end-of-draw.
