Sediment Filtration Installation and Service
Why this matters
Sediment in water - sand, silt, rust particles, organic debris - damages downstream water treatment equipment, clogs fixtures, stains laundry, and accumulates in water heaters. A properly sized sediment filter is the foundation of any water treatment system. Without it, the softener resin fouls, the UV quartz sleeve clouds, the RO membranes plug, and the customer's appliances suffer.
When to use this procedure
- New water treatment system installation (pre-filter required)
- Customer reports cloudy water, sediment in drinking glasses, or sand/silt in fixtures
- Well water (always recommended)
- Older municipal supplies that experience occasional sediment events (water main breaks, pressure changes)
- Pre-filter to extend life of softener, RO, UV, or other treatment

Micron ratings
The filter's micron rating determines what it captures:

For pre-filtration before a softener or UV, 5-25 micron is typical. For specific contaminant reduction (bacteria, cysts), tighter ratings.

A typical residential whole-house sediment filter: 4.5 x 20 inch big-blue housing with a 5-micron cartridge for medium-load installations. Smaller cartridge housings work for cleaner municipal supplies; larger for heavily-laden well water.
Installation procedure
Step 1: Survey the location
- Identify the water entry point (just past the meter or pressure tank)
- Determine if a bypass valve is present (recommend if not)
- Verify space for the filter housing
- Identify the drain for backwash or filter changes (a small floor drain or utility sink)
Step 2: Plan the install
- Filter location: between the water meter and the rest of the home / treatment train
- If a softener is downstream: filter before the softener
- Verify the housing's flow direction is correct for the install location
- Install pressure gauges before AND after the filter (optional but useful for diagnostic)
Step 3: Cut into the supply line
- Shut off the water at the meter
- Drain the line (run a downstream tap)
- Cut the pipe at the planned location
- Install fittings appropriate to the pipe type (copper, PEX, CPVC)
- Install the bypass valve assembly (typically 3-valve bypass - input, output, and a center valve that allows water flow when the filter is bypassed)
Step 4: Mount the filter housing
- Wall-mount the filter housing securely
- Verify the housing's input and output match the flow direction
- Tighten connections per manufacturer torque spec
- Inspect for leaks
Step 5: Install the cartridge
- Open the housing
- Insert the cartridge per manufacturer instructions (note the cartridge's flow direction)
- Verify the O-ring is in place and lubricated
- Close the housing; tighten per manufacturer
Step 6: Restore water and verify
- Slowly turn on the water supply
- Watch for leaks at all connections
- Run the filter for several minutes to flush out any cartridge dust
- Verify normal water flow at downstream taps
Step 7: Set up service schedule
- Note the installation date
- Set a calendar reminder for the first cartridge change (typically 3-6 months for first change)
- Document for the customer file
Service procedure
For routine cartridge change:
- Shut off water at the bypass (close input and output valves; open center valve)
- Depressurize the filter housing
- Open the housing (twist the housing wrench)
- Remove the old cartridge
- Inspect the housing interior:
- Sediment buildup at the bottom: clean
- Mineral deposits: clean with white vinegar
- Biofilm or slime: clean + sanitize
- Insert new cartridge
- Replace O-ring if it shows wear; lubricate with silicone
- Close the housing; tighten
- Slowly open the bypass; verify no leaks
- Document the service in the customer file
Cartridge replacement frequency
Depends on water quality + filter type:

Visual inspection: a cartridge with visible discoloration (orange from iron, gray from sediment, green from algae) needs replacement.
Pressure drop monitoring
Installing pressure gauges before and after the filter:
- Normal pressure drop: 5-10 PSI for a fresh filter
- Increase indicates filter loading (sediment accumulating)
- Significant increase (15+ PSI): replace cartridge
- Drastic drop in downstream pressure: cartridge fully clogged
Customers with gauges installed never have a "I didn't know I needed to replace the filter" moment.
Spin-down filter for heavy sediment
For wells with high sediment load, a spin-down (centrifugal) filter is often the better choice:
- Sediment falls into a clear settling chamber
- Periodically flushed manually (turn the valve, drain the settled sediment)
- No cartridge replacement
- Lower ongoing cost for heavy-sediment supplies
- Initial cost similar to cartridge housing
Customer maintains by occasional flushing - no professional service required between annual visits.
