Customer Caulked Over Weeps Themselves: DIY-Induced Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer who notices small holes at the bottom of their window frame and reads online that "windows should not have holes" sometimes seals the weep holes with caulk, paint, or expanding foam. Weeps are not a defect; they are the only drainage path for water that enters the sill chamber from sealant, sash perimeter, or driving rain. Once blocked, the next rain fills the chamber and water exits the path of least resistance: through the interior frame, into the wall cavity, or back through the sash track. The job arrives as "water at window after rain" but the root cause is customer-applied sealant. The first 10 minutes should identify the DIY action.
Step 1: Ask about recent changes
Lead with "has anything been done to the window since installation?" Listen for sealed, caulked, painted, weatherproofed, winterized. Customers do not volunteer DIY work because they do not see it as relevant to the leak. Capture:
- Was sealant applied to the exterior frame bottom in the past 12 months?
- Was the window painted, including the exterior bottom edge?
- Was anything added or modified in the sash track?
- Was any product used marketed as window-sealing, weatherstripping, or rope caulk?
Take notes; this becomes a billing conversation later.
Step 2: Locate the weeps on the specific window model
Weeps are not standardized in shape or location. Inspect the bottom of the exterior frame for:
- Slotted weeps: horizontal slots, often 1/4 inch tall by 1 to 2 inches long, typically two per window on vinyl single and double-hung units.
- Hooded weeps: a small plastic flap that opens outward to drain and closes against wind-driven rain.
- Sill-corner drains: open corners at the bottom of the sash track that drain to the exterior of the sill nose.
- Internal weeps: commercial aluminum windows weep through internal channels to a sill-pan drain.
Check manufacturer documentation if the weep design is not obvious.
Step 3: Confirm the weeps are blocked
Once located, test each weep:
- Visual: sealant in the slot, paint film across the opening, or hardened bead inside.
- Probe with a thin wire. A clear weep accepts the probe and you can feel the chamber; a blocked weep stops the probe at the surface.
- Pour test. Pour 1/4 cup of water into the interior sill track. A working weep system exits the water in seconds; a blocked system pools and overflows or backflows through the sash.
Photograph each weep before clearing.
Step 4: Inspect for secondary damage from blocked drainage
Blocked weeps mean water has been entering the sill chamber and finding a path. Open the sash and check:
- Sill track for standing water, mold, or mineral staining.
- Interior sill and casing for water staining or paint bubbling.
- Wall finish below the window for stained drywall, swollen baseboard, or moisture indicators.
- Sash bottom rail for warping, soft spots in wood, or delamination in clad units.
If the blockage was recent (under 30 days) damage is often limited to sill track and minor sill staining. Blockages over a season can produce hidden drywall and framing damage that must be opened to assess.
Step 5: Clear the weeps correctly
Do not just punch through the sealant. The correct sequence:
- Score the sealant with a sharp blade to define the weep opening.
- Remove the cut sealant with a pick. Pull out all of it; partial removal lets residual sealant re-block on the next rain event.
- For paint blockage: scrape with a small flat tool. If paint ran inside, work the wire probe in from outside.
- For expanding foam: dig out with a pick. Cured foam does not dissolve.
- For hooded weeps with the flap glued shut: free with a pick, verify movement, replace if damaged.
After clearing, repeat the pour test.
Step 6: Match findings to the right corrective action

| Weeps cleared, drywall below window stained or soft | Wall-cavity damage. Open the wall to assess framing and insulation; this is a separate scope from window service. |
| Customer used silicone in the install gap thinking it was the weep | Different scope. Verify install-gap detail is still functional; remove interior silicone, restore proper air seal with foam if applicable. |
Step 7: Re-quote before continuing
The original symptom was a leak. The actual scope now includes clearing customer-applied sealant, inspecting secondary damage, and potentially opening interior finishes. Present this to the homeowner before starting any wall opening: the leak was caused by sealed weeps, the weeps are now clear, and any wall opening to assess secondary damage is a change order. A short written change order signed at the start of the visit prevents the dispute at invoice.
Step 8: Educate to prevent repeat
Show the customer the weep locations on their specific windows and explain in plain language that the weeps drain incidental water out of the sill chamber and must remain open. Leave a written note or label on the file. Customers who blocked weeps once will do it again unless they understand the function.
Do not paint, caulk, or otherwise seal weep holes on a residential window. Weep holes are the manufacturer's drainage path for any water that enters the sill chamber and must remain open for the window to perform as tested per AAMA standards. Blocking weeps voids the manufacturer warranty on most residential windows.
