Window Glass Option Selection

Why this matters

A modern replacement window can be configured with dozens of glass options. The choice affects energy performance, safety, security, sound transmission, durability, and cost. A contractor who can guide the customer through the options helps them make the right decision; one who doesn't may quote the wrong glass for the application.

Standard glass

Annealed glass (standard)

The cheapest, most basic glass:

  • Standard residential
  • Breaks into large dangerous pieces
  • Not for safety-required applications

Tempered glass (heat-treated)

  • 4 to 5 times stronger than annealed
  • Breaks into small (less dangerous) pieces
  • Required for safety glazing per IRC R308
  • Applications: bathtub / shower area; near doors; near floor level; large windows

Laminated glass

  • Two layers of glass with plastic interlayer
  • Stays intact when broken
  • Provides security (intruder can't easily break through)
  • Sound dampening
  • UV protection

Wired glass

  • Glass with wire mesh embedded
  • Fire-resistant
  • Specific applications (older institutions)
  • Rarely used in modern residential

Performance glass options

Low-E coating

Microscopic coating on glass surface:

Type Description
Soft-coat (sputtered) Best performance; coating must be inside insulating glass
Hard-coat (pyrolytic) More durable; can be exterior; slightly less efficient

Low-E coatings improve U-factor by 20 to 60 percent depending on application.

Climate-specific Low-E

Gas fill (between panes)

Argon gas:

  • Mid-range performance

Safety glass applications

  • Within 24 inches of door (vertical edge)
  • Within 18 inches of walking surface (windows close to floor)
  • In tub and shower enclosures
  • In windows over 9 sq ft within 60 inches of floor
  • In specific stair locations

Decorative

  • Stained glass (custom; expensive)

Sound-dampening

For homes near roads, airports, etc.:

Insulating glass unit (IGU) considerations

Spacer type

Between the two panes:

Sealant

  • Seals the gas in the IGU

  • Single seal: lower cost; shorter life
  • Dual seal: longer warranty; better performance

IGU service life

A typical IGU:

  • Standard double pane: 15 to 25 years
  • Premium with quality seal: 25 to 50 years
  • Triple pane: 25 to 50+ years

IGU failure visible as:

  • Condensation inside the panes
  • Cloudy appearance
  • Increased heat loss

Failed IGUs typically replaced (whole window or just the IGU depending on construction).

Common glass selection mistakes

Wrong climate for the Low-E

  • Cold-climate Low-E in hot area: hot bills
  • Hot-climate Low-E in cold area: cold rooms

Skipping safety glass

Cheap IGU spacer

NEVER substitute annealed glass for tempered glass in safety-required locations (per IRC R308). The customer's safety depends on tempered glass behavior when broken. Code violation, customer injury risk, inspector failure. Verify the code-required tempered locations and order tempered for those.
