Window Glass Option Selection
Why this matters
A modern replacement window can be configured with dozens of glass options. The choice affects energy performance, safety, security, sound transmission, durability, and cost. A contractor who can guide the customer through the options helps them make the right decision; one who doesn't may quote the wrong glass for the application.
Standard glass
Annealed glass (standard)
The cheapest, most basic glass:
- Standard residential
- Breaks into large dangerous pieces
- Not for safety-required applications
Tempered glass (heat-treated)
- 4 to 5 times stronger than annealed
- Breaks into small (less dangerous) pieces
- Required for safety glazing per IRC R308
- Applications: bathtub / shower area; near doors; near floor level; large windows
Laminated glass
- Two layers of glass with plastic interlayer
- Stays intact when broken
- Provides security (intruder can't easily break through)
- Sound dampening
- UV protection
Wired glass
- Glass with wire mesh embedded
- Fire-resistant
- Specific applications (older institutions)
- Rarely used in modern residential
Performance glass options
Low-E coating
Microscopic coating on glass surface:

Sound-dampening

Insulating glass unit (IGU) considerations
Spacer type
Between the two panes:

Sealant

IGU service life
A typical IGU:
- Standard double pane: 15 to 25 years
- Premium with quality seal: 25 to 50 years
- Triple pane: 25 to 50+ years
IGU failure visible as:
- Condensation inside the panes
- Cloudy appearance
- Increased heat loss
Failed IGUs typically replaced (whole window or just the IGU depending on construction).

Common glass selection mistakes
Wrong climate for the Low-E

NEVER substitute annealed glass for tempered glass in safety-required locations (per IRC R308). The customer's safety depends on tempered glass behavior when broken. Code violation, customer injury risk, inspector failure. Verify the code-required tempered locations and order tempered for those.
