NFRC Ratings Interpretation

Why this matters

Every window in the US is required to display an NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) label with specific performance ratings. The customer sees the numbers but rarely understands them; the contractor who can interpret and explain produces customers who make informed decisions. The NFRC label is also the basis for energy code compliance and rebate qualifications.

The four NFRC ratings

U-factor

How well the window prevents heat loss:

  • Range: typically 0.15 to 1.20
  • Lower is better
  • Critical in cold climates (winter heat loss)

0.15 to 0.25 Premium; passive house quality
0.25 to 0.30 Very efficient
0.30 to 0.40 Good performance
0.40 to 0.50 Standard efficiency
0.50 to 0.80 Lower efficiency
Over 0.80 Single pane; very poor

ENERGY STAR threshold (varies by climate):

  • Northern: 0.27 or lower
  • North-Central: 0.30
  • South-Central: 0.31
  • Southern: 0.40

SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)

How much solar heat the window admits:

  • Range: 0 to 1.0
  • Lower = less solar heat admitted
  • Higher = more solar heat (good in winter; bad in summer)
Rating Effect
0.20 Very low solar gain; cool climates good
0.30 to 0.40 Moderate; good for most climates
0.50 to 0.70 High solar gain; cold climates with passive solar

ENERGY STAR threshold (varies):

  • Northern: 0.35 or higher (allow solar gain)
  • Southern: 0.25 or lower (limit solar gain)

The right SHGC depends on the climate and orientation.

VT (Visible Transmittance)

How much daylight passes through:

  • Range: 0 to 1.0
  • Higher = more daylight
  • Aesthetic and daylighting consideration

0.55 to 0.70 Clear / very transparent
0.70+ Maximum clear glass

Air Leakage

How much air passes through window seams:

  • Range: typically 0.1 to 0.3 cfm/sq ft
  • Lower is better
  • ENERGY STAR threshold: 0.30 cfm/sq ft

Reading the NFRC label

The NFRC label appears on every certified window. Look for:

  • U-factor: typically top of label
  • SHGC: typically below U-factor
  • VT: typically below SHGC
  • Air leakage: typically at bottom
  • ENERGY STAR designation (if applicable)
  • Climate zone qualification

Climate considerations

Heating-dominated (Northern)

Cold climates prioritize:

  • Low U-factor (less heat loss)
  • Higher SHGC (more solar gain)
  • Standard VT

Example: Minnesota; Maine

Cooling-dominated (Southern)

Hot climates prioritize:

  • Low U-factor (still important for AC efficiency)
  • Low SHGC (less solar gain to manage)
  • Higher VT for natural light

Example: Florida; Arizona

Mixed climates

  • Balance heating and cooling
  • Moderate U-factor and SHGC
  • ENERGY STAR-zone-specific recommendations

Specific orientation

Within a climate, orientation matters:

  • South-facing: more solar gain (lower SHGC for cooling-dominated; higher for heating-dominated)
  • North-facing: less solar gain; can use higher VT
  • East / West: morning / afternoon sun (specific considerations for cooling)

When comparing two windows:

ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR labels certified windows that meet specific U-factor / SHGC thresholds for the climate zone:

Northern zone

  • U-factor 0.27 or lower
  • SHGC any value (greenhouse effect desirable)

North-Central zone

  • U-factor 0.30 or lower
  • SHGC 0.40 or lower

South-Central zone

  • U-factor 0.31 or lower
  • SHGC 0.25 or lower

Southern zone

  • U-factor 0.40 or lower
  • SHGC 0.25 or lower

Plus specific air-leakage requirement (0.30 cfm/sq ft).

ENERGY STAR-qualified windows may be eligible for:

  • IRA 25C tax credit (30 percent up to $600 per year for windows)
  • State and utility rebates
  • Building code compliance

Code compliance

The IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) governs:

  • Specific U-factor and SHGC requirements by climate zone
  • Air infiltration limits
  • Verification at inspection

Each state adopts a version of IECC; verify specific requirements.

Specific scenarios

Replacing single-pane windows in cold climate

Major opportunity:

  • New low-E double or triple-pane windows
  • U-factor improvement (from 1.10 to 0.27 typical)
  • Significant energy savings
  • Customer comfort improvement
  • Tax credit / rebate qualification

Replacement in hot climate

Different priorities:

  • SHGC reduction primary
  • Some low-E coatings designed for low SHGC
  • Reflective film as supplement

Custom windows for specific orientation

For premium projects:

  • North-facing: higher VT (more light, no glare)
  • South-facing: lower SHGC (less cooling load)
  • East / West: balance based on use pattern

Storm windows

For older homes with single-pane windows that customer wants to retain (historic):

  • Add storm window
  • Improves U-factor (storm + original = better than original alone)
  • Less effective than replacement
  • Preserves historic appearance

Performance impact

Different types have different default performance:

  • Casement: typically tightest seal; lowest air leakage
  • Double-hung: more seams; slightly higher air leakage
  • Fixed: tightest; no operation
  • Sliding: most air leakage typically

Glass package options

Single pane

  • Glass with no second pane
  • Worst U-factor (typically 1.10)
  • Rare in modern install except historic preservation

Double pane

  • Two glass panes with air or gas in between
  • Standard modern (U-factor typically 0.30 to 0.50)
  • Most common

Triple pane

  • Three glass panes
  • Best U-factor (typically 0.20 to 0.30)
  • More expensive
  • Premium for cold climates

Low-E coating

  • Microscopic coating on glass surface
  • Reduces heat transfer
  • Various Low-E coatings for different climates
  • Soft-coat (preferred for performance)
  • Hard-coat (durability advantages, slightly less performance)
