Buzz Traced To LED Driver Not Dimmer Cross-System Decision Tree
Why this matters
Audible buzz from dimmed LED lighting is reflexively blamed on the dimmer, and electricians swap dimmer after dimmer chasing a noise that lives in the LED driver. The buzz is produced when the driver's switching electronics or its passive components resonate at the chopped waveform the dimmer feeds them. Sometimes the dimmer is the cause, sometimes the driver, and sometimes only the specific pairing. Knowing how to isolate which component actually rings keeps you from replacing good dimmers, and tells the customer whether the fix is a control, a lamp, or a compatibility-matched pair.
Symptom presentation
- A buzz or hum from the fixture, the lamp, or the wall box, loudest at certain dim levels.
- Noise that changes pitch or volume as you sweep the dimmer.
- Buzz from the dimmer itself in the wall box, distinct from buzz at the fixture.
- Multiple identical fixtures all buzzing on one dimmer, or only one of several buzzing.
- Buzz that disappears at full brightness and returns when dimmed.
Quick checks
- Sweep the dimmer slowly and note where the buzz peaks; mid-range peaks often point to the driver, full-on silence points to a phase-control interaction.
- Confirm the dimmer is rated for LED and the driver is dimmable and listed as compatible with that dimmer type (leading-edge vs trailing-edge).
- Verify the dimmer load is within its rated minimum and maximum for the connected LED wattage. Many LED dimmers carry a much lower effective LED rating than their incandescent rating; a dimmer rated 600 W incandescent may be derated to 150 W LED or less, and a load below the minimum drops out and buzzes.
- Listen with an ear at the wall box and then at the fixture to localize the source. A mechanical stethoscope or a cardboard tube held to each surface sharpens the localization.
- Note whether the noise is constant or modulates with the AC line; a steady buzz that tracks line frequency points at magnetostriction in a choke, while an irregular buzz points at the driver's switching stage hunting for regulation.
Isolation tree
Step 1. Replace the dimmer with a plain on/off switch and run the lights at full.
- Buzz stops entirely: the noise only exists when dimmed. Go to Step 2.
- Buzz continues at full power on a plain switch: the driver buzzes independent of dimming. The driver is the source. Go to Step 4.
Step 2. Restore the dimmer and listen at the wall box versus the fixture while sweeping.
- Buzz is loudest in the wall box and the dimmer body vibrates: the dimmer's choke/filter is ringing. Try a dimmer of the opposite topology (trailing-edge if currently leading-edge) rated for the load. If that silences it, the dimmer pairing was the cause.
- Buzz is loudest at the fixture: the driver is ringing on the chopped waveform. Go to Step 3.
Step 3. Swap one fixture's driver/lamp for a different make on the same dimmer.
- New driver is quiet on the same dimmer: the original driver is the noisy component. Replace the lamps/drivers with a model verified compatible with this dimmer.
- New driver also buzzes on this dimmer but is quiet on a different dimmer: the pairing is the problem. Match a dimmer and driver from a tested-compatible combination.
Step 4. Driver buzzes even on a plain switch.
- Single driver buzzes, others quiet: that driver is defective. Replace it.
- All drivers of one make buzz at full: the driver design rings at line frequency; replace with a different driver, or accept and disclose if within spec.
Step 5. If the buzz only appears with several fixtures ganged, check total load against dimmer capacity and harmonic loading.
- Buzz worsens as more fixtures share one dimmer and the bank nears the dimmer's LED rating: the dimmer's filter is overdriven. Split the load across two dimmers or use a dimmer with a higher LED rating.
- Buzz is unchanged by quantity but constant per driver: the cause is the individual driver, not the aggregate load; return to Step 4.
Confirming diagnosis
A dimmer-caused buzz silences when the dimmer is replaced with the correct-topology, properly loaded model and reproduces with the original. A driver-caused buzz reproduces with the driver on a plain switch or on multiple dimmers and silences only by changing the driver. A pairing-caused buzz appears only with one specific dimmer-driver combination and clears with a manufacturer-tested match. Confirm by listening at the source while sweeping and by the swap that silences it. Document the dimmer topology, the load wattage, and which swap quieted the noise.
Remediation
- Dimmer topology mismatch: install the correct leading-edge or trailing-edge dimmer for the driver, within the rated minimum and maximum load.
- Defective or noisy driver: replace the lamp/driver with a model verified compatible with the installed dimmer.
- Incompatible pairing: use a dimmer and driver from the manufacturer's tested-compatible list.
- Underloaded dimmer: add load to meet the dimmer minimum, or install a load-correction device the manufacturer specifies.
- Driver buzzing on a plain switch: replace the defective driver; if a design characteristic, choose a quieter driver and disclose to the customer.
