Customer Replaced Outlet Now No Power: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A homeowner-replaced receptacle that leaves no power is the most common DIY callback, and the fault is almost always in the swap. Conductors landed on the wrong screws, line and load reversed, a backstab that did not catch, a broken-off conductor, or an upstream GFCI tripped by the work all produce a dead outlet. The hazard is that DIY swaps also create the dangerous miswires: a hot on the ground screw, a bootleg ground, or a reversed polarity that energizes the shell of a device. Approaching it with a clear sequence finds the dead-power cause fast and catches the unsafe wiring the homeowner could not see.
Symptom presentation
- The replaced receptacle is dead, and sometimes outlets downstream of it are dead too.
- The work was done by the customer, often with the breaker left on or with conductors backstabbed.
- A GFCI somewhere upstream may be tripped and will not reset, or resets and trips again.
- A receptacle tester may read open hot, open neutral, open ground, or a reversed condition rather than simply no power.
Quick checks
- Confirm the breaker for the circuit is on and not tripped; re-cycle it firmly.
- Find and test any upstream GFCI receptacle or breaker; a DIY swap often trips an upstream GFCI that protects this outlet.
- At the replaced receptacle, identify line and load conductors and confirm they are on the correct brass (hot) and silver (neutral) screws with ground on green.
- Check for backstabbed conductors that did not seat, and for a conductor broken off short during the swap.
- Use a tester to read the fault pattern (open hot, open neutral, open ground, reversed) rather than only confirming "dead."
- Ask whether the homeowner installed a GFCI or AFCI receptacle in place of a standard one. A GFCI device wired with line and load reversed will pass power to its own face but not to its load terminals, and will not protect, a common DIY error that reads as "downstream dead."
- Count the cables in the box. A two-cable box that the homeowner wired without preserving the line-to-load feed-through leaves everything past the device dead even though the swapped outlet itself works.
Isolation tree
Verify de-energized before touching conductors, then work the swap.
- Breaker and GFCI. Reset the breaker. Locate and reset any upstream GFCI. If the GFCI will not reset, a downstream miswire (often a neutral-ground contact created by the swap) is holding it tripped; go to step 4. If resetting restores power, the swap merely tripped protection.
- Conductor landing. With the circuit off, confirm the hot is on brass, neutral on silver, ground on green. A neutral and hot reversed, or a hot landed where the load should be, leaves the outlet dead or hot-neutral reversed.
- Backstab and broken conductor. Pull each conductor lightly. A backstab that did not seat or a conductor broken off short carries nothing. Move to screw terminals and re-strip any short or nicked conductor.
- Neutral-ground / bootleg / hot-on-ground. Check that the neutral is not tied to ground at the device and that the ground screw carries only the equipment ground. A hot landed on the ground screw, or a bootleg ground (neutral jumped to ground), is both a no-power-pattern and a serious shock hazard; correct it.
- Feed-through to downstream. If outlets past this one are dead, the line-to-load feed-through at the swapped device is broken; re-land so line and load share continuous hot and neutral.
- Polarity confirm. Re-test with a receptacle tester after correction to confirm correct hot, neutral, and ground, with no reversal.
Confirming diagnosis
- Tripped protection: breaker or upstream GFCI tripped by the swap; resetting restores power once any miswire is corrected.
- Reversed or wrong landing: hot and neutral swapped or a conductor on the wrong screw; the tester shows reversed or open patterns.
- Unseated backstab / broken conductor: the device carries nothing; re-landing on the screws restores power.
- Bootleg ground or hot-on-ground: a shock-hazard miswire that also reads as a fault; correcting the ground landing clears it.
- Broken feed-through: downstream dead while the device may work; line and load not continuous.
Remediation
- Reset the breaker and any upstream GFCI after the miswire is corrected.
- Land hot on brass, neutral on silver, ground on green; move all backstabbed conductors to the screw terminals and torque to the device listing.
- Re-strip and re-land any conductor broken off short; replace the device if its terminals are damaged.
- Remove any neutral-to-ground tie at the device and any bootleg ground; the ground screw carries only the equipment grounding conductor.
- Restore continuous line-to-load feed-through where downstream outlets are fed; re-test polarity with a receptacle tester before closing up.
DIY receptacle swaps frequently create reversed polarity, hot-on-ground, or bootleg grounds that energize a device shell and present a shock or electrocution hazard. Verify the circuit is de-energized with a meter before touching conductors, and confirm correct polarity and a true equipment ground with a tester before returning the outlet to service. Do not assume the homeowner's wiring is safe because the breaker is off; confirm it.
