Generator Transfer Switch Installation
Purpose
Define the install protocol for a residential generator transfer switch - the device that safely connects a portable or standby generator to the home's circuits during a power outage. The transfer switch ISOLATES the home from the utility while the generator is running, preventing backfeed that could electrocute utility linemen working on "de-energized" lines.
Scope
Applies to:
- Manual transfer switches (10-circuit, 30A or 50A; portable generator)
- Automatic transfer switches (whole-home, standby generator)
- Interlocks (alternative to a transfer switch; mechanical breaker lockout)
Excludes whole-home generator startup commissioning (separate scope; generator manufacturer typically handles), and grid-tied solar inverter transfer switching (different code requirements).
Responsibilities
- Dispatcher confirms generator size, brand, and panel make/model at booking
- Lead electrician designs the circuit list with the customer + runs the install
- Customer witnesses the testing protocol + understands the switchover procedure
Procedure
- Customer briefing + circuit selection. Walk the home with the customer. Decide which circuits feed the transfer switch (must-have during outage: refrigerator, lights, well pump if applicable, furnace control circuit, perhaps a window AC).
- Calculate the load against the generator's rated output. Add nameplate amps for selected loads + 25 % overhead. Match to the generator's continuous rating, not surge.
- De-energize the panel. Main breaker off, then utility disconnect at the meter if accessible.
- Mount the transfer switch adjacent to the main panel. Conduit between the two: 2" minimum for 10-circuit switches; 3" for whole-home automatic.
- Pull wiring from the transfer switch to the main panel - typically 6 AWG for 30A or 4 AWG for 50A on portable installs.
- Move selected circuits from the main panel to the transfer switch. Each selected circuit's breaker stays in the main panel, but the load wire moves to the transfer switch's load lugs.
- Wire the generator inlet box. L14-30 receptacle for 30A, L14-50 for 50A. Mount on the exterior; wire to the transfer switch with appropriate cable (typically SO cable rated for the generator output).
- Connect the bonding / grounding per NEC 250.20 + 250.28. A portable generator is typically considered a "separately derived source" in this configuration - bond at the transfer switch, not at the generator.
- Restore utility power + main breaker. Verify the panel + each circuit operate normally on utility.
- Test the transfer switch with the generator.
- Start generator outside (always outdoors; CO risk).
- Connect to the inlet.
- Operate the transfer switch from "Line" to "Generator" position.
- Verify each selected circuit operates on generator power.
- Operate the switch back to "Line" position.
- Shut down generator after a cool-down period per the generator manual.
- Customer walk-through. Demonstrate the full switchover procedure with them operating the switch. Make sure they understand: starting the generator BEFORE connecting; cooling down BEFORE disconnecting.
- Document the install. Photo of the transfer switch + panel + which circuits are on the switch. Provide a laminated quick-reference card mounted near the switch.
Acceptance Criteria
- Transfer switch installed adjacent to main panel
- All selected circuits operate from both utility AND generator power
- Customer can demonstrate the full switchover procedure
- Quick-reference card mounted at the switch
- Photo documentation in customer file
- Customer signs field report acknowledging the demo
NEVER permit a customer to use a "double-male" cord ("suicide cord") to feed a generator into a standard outlet - even if they've been doing it for years. This is the #1 cause of utility lineman electrocution during outages, AND it bypasses every safety device in the home. If the customer says "I just plug it in here," the answer is "you can stop doing that today; this is what we're installing to replace that habit."
