Install a Ceiling Fan
Goal
Install a new ceiling fan in a residential location - either replacing a light fixture or going into a new location. The critical step is the support: a ceiling fan is a moving load and standard light fixture boxes will fail. Skipping the brace-box step is the #1 cause of "ceiling fans falling" liability incidents.
Prerequisites
- Ceiling fan kit (verify wattage + blade span matches the room)
- Fan-rated electrical box (typically a brace box with a metal strap; NEVER a standard plastic light box)
- Wire nuts, electrical tape
- Voltage tester, multimeter
- Drill, ladder, screwdrivers
- Helper (2-person job once the motor housing goes up)
- 90 - 120 minutes
Steps
- Cut power at the breaker. Verify dead at the existing box with a non-contact tester.
- Remove the existing fixture (light or old fan). Photograph wiring first.
- Inspect the existing electrical box. If it's a standard light box (plastic, screwed to a joist), it MUST be replaced with a fan-rated brace box. This is non-negotiable.
- Install fan-rated brace box if needed. Fish the brace through the existing hole, expand between joists. Modern brace boxes are 1-screwdriver installs from below - no attic access needed in most cases. The box should be rated for at least 50 lb (the fan + a future heavier replacement).
- Hang the fan mounting bracket to the box. Hardware comes with the fan kit.
- Connect the fan wiring at the bracket - these are the wires that come down through the canopy:
- Black (fan motor) to building black (hot)
- Blue (fan light, if equipped) to either the same black OR a separate switch leg (if the customer has 2 switches)
- White (neutral) to building white
- Green/copper (ground) to building ground / box ground
- Lift the motor housing to the bracket. Hook the motor's pre-installed hook onto the bracket (most fans have this - it lets you hands-free do the wiring while the fan hangs from the hook).
- Lock the motor housing to the bracket with the included screws.
- Install the canopy + cover plate.
- Install fan blades. Match the orientation arrow. Each blade should torque to spec; an unevenly-torqued blade causes wobble.
- Install the light kit + bulbs. If the fan didn't come with this and the customer wants light, this is a separate task.
- Restore power. Test:
- Fan motor cycles through speeds (off / low / med / high)
- Direction reverse switch works (summer / winter direction)
- Light kit operates (if installed)
- Run the fan at high speed for 15 minutes. Listen for wobble + tick. Wobble = blade torque uneven OR blades not seated. Tick = a loose screw somewhere.
Verification
- Fan hangs level
- All speeds operate cleanly
- Direction reverse works
- Light operates (if applicable)
- No wobble at any speed after 15-minute run
- Customer is shown the wall control + reverse switch operation
Troubleshooting
- Visible wobble at high speed: blade torque uneven. Tighten in star pattern. If wobble persists, swap blade positions - blades have slight variation and rotating them can correct balance.
- Fan motor hums but doesn't spin: stuck on high-friction bearing OR wrong capacitor (some fan kits ship with multiple cap values; verify against the manual).
- Light works, fan doesn't (or vice versa): separate switch leg wiring issue. The customer's switch may be a single switch but the fan needs separate control. Recommend a fan-rated switch upgrade.
- Fan only spins one direction: reverse switch on the fan housing wasn't flipped OR remote control wasn't programmed for both directions.
A ceiling fan installed on a standard light-fixture box can fall - and has. The brace box requirement isn't a code suggestion; it's a personal-injury liability item. If the customer wants you to install over a non-fan-rated box "to save money," refuse. The brace box upgrade is of materials and 15 minutes of work.
