Knob-and-Tube + Pre-1950 Old-House Electrical

Why this matters

Old-house electrical (knob-and-tube circa 1900 - 1945, 2-wire armored cable 1940 - 1960) is in 5 - 10 million U.S. homes. The customer's situation: insurance will not cover the home, OR a remodel triggers code-compliance updates, OR the breaker keeps tripping for unclear reasons. The electrician who can survey + remediate knob-and-tube captures the + specialty job; the generalist who says "I don't work on that" sends a high-margin customer to a competitor + leaves them in a dangerous + uninsured home.

What knob-and-tube (K&T) is

Branch wiring system 1880s - 1940s. Two separate cloth-insulated conductors (hot + neutral) supported by porcelain knobs (every 4 - 6 ft) + passing through porcelain tubes (at framing penetrations). No equipment grounding conductor (EGC). No common cable jacket.

Visual identification:

  • Porcelain knobs (cylindrical, white, with notches for wire)
  • Porcelain tubes (cylindrical, white, hollow through framing)
  • Cloth-wrapped wires, often black + white
  • Wires separated 1 - 2 in apart
  • Connections made by twisting + soldering (NO wire nuts)

Common locations: attic, basement, behind plaster walls, in joist bays.

Why K&T is a problem

No ground: 3-prong receptacles can't be properly installed. GFCI receptacles can replace 2-prong without ground but provide PEOPLE protection only, not equipment protection.

Insulation degradation: 80 - 120 year old cloth insulation cracks + powders. Air contact + heat accelerate. Exposed conductor + grounded surface = fire.

Improper extensions: 80% of K&T homes have had circuits extended by amateur work - modern wire spliced to K&T improperly, often without junction box.

Buried in insulation: K&T was designed with air space around conductors for cooling. Modern blown-in insulation packed around K&T = overheating + fire risk.

Insurance refuses coverage: most homeowners insurers refuse OR surcharge K&T homes. Customer often discovers this when buying / refinancing.

Code compliance: existing K&T grandfathered in most jurisdictions but any modification triggers full code update of affected circuits.

Assessment

Walk-through inspection:

  • Identify all K&T branches: visible in basement / attic / unfinished areas
  • Identify hidden K&T: pull receptacle + look in box; pull light fixture cover
  • Identify recent extensions / modifications
  • Document with photos + diagram
  • Identify circuits that MUST be remediated for customer's specific reason (insurance, remodel, safety)

Risk levels:

  • Severe: K&T buried in insulation, exposed in attic with rodent damage, modified by amateurs, in active branch circuits
  • Moderate: K&T in basements with good clearance, no insulation contact, original soldered connections
  • Manageable: K&T disconnected at panel + abandoned (no current flow)

Remediation options

Full rewire: replace all K&T with copper/Romex. Most expensive + most complete (insurance + future-proof). Drywall demo + repair scope significant in plaster homes. Best for comprehensive remodel.

Selective rewire: replace highest-risk K&T branches, leave benign K&T alone. Customer + insurance often accept. Focus on attic + insulation-buried K&T + circuits feeding heavy loads (kitchen, laundry, baths). Document remaining K&T as disconnected.

Abandonment: cut + cap K&T at panel; leave dead conductor in walls. Cheapest; customer's insurance may still refuse. Interim approach.

Convert specific outlets to grounded via surface-mount metal conduit + new box + EGC to panel: niche use for high-priority outlets (computer, AV, sump pump); doesn't address K&T elsewhere.

The actual rewire process

Plan: document every K&T circuit + outlets/fixtures, design new circuit layout, permit + AHJ coordination, materials, schedule outage windows.

Demolition: cut access at each junction box + pass-through, remove drywall/plaster strips for runs, identify framing routes, photograph wire paths.

Pull new wire: Romex / Type AC / Type MC per plan, through joist bays + wall cavities, past insulation (often insulation-rated wire or conduit), to each new outlet box.

Connections: new outlet boxes (metal or plastic per code), new devices (3-prong, GFCI per requirement), new wire nuts (no solder + tape), new EGC throughout.

Disconnect K&T at panel + remove abandoned wire OR leave dead with clear marking. Inspection + permit close. Drywall + paint usually separate contractor.

K&T + insulation (the IRC problem)

IRC requires energy-saving insulation in walls + attics. K&T was designed for air space - insulation around it = overheating. Some jurisdictions: no insulation contact with K&T (full removal required). Others: limited insulation OK with electrician's signoff. Always check AHJ + insurance. Energy retrofits trigger K&T remediation in many homes.

Insurance + financing

Insurance letter: customer's insurance company wants:

  • Full electrical inspection
  • Confirmation of K&T remediation
  • Photo documentation
  • Electrician's certification on letterhead
  • Permit + inspection close-out

Customer financing: K&T remediation often financed via:

  • Home improvement loan
  • Insurance settlement (if K&T led to claim)
  • Refinance with cash-out
  • Settlement during home sale

Common K&T mistakes

"It works, leave it alone": works ≠ safe. K&T can pass voltage + still be fire risk.

Modifying without permit: pulling new wire from K&T circuit creates immediate code violation + worsens insurance.

Mixing K&T with Romex without junction box: shortcut splices buried in walls cause house fires.

Forgetting concealed runs: focus on visible K&T but miss what's behind plaster walls.

Skipping the insulation audit: customer adds insulation, K&T overheats months later, fire.

Not documenting: customer has no record + insurance won't accept; redo work later.

Customer education

The conversation:

  • "Your home has knob-and-tube wiring from [year]. The wire itself is old + the insulation has degraded. Insurance companies often won't cover homes with active K&T."
  • "We have three remediation options: full rewire, selective rewire of highest-risk circuits, or abandonment + new circuit run."
  • "We recommend [option] because [reason specific to customer]."
  • "After remediation, we provide documentation for your insurance company + the permit close-out from the city."

Customers respond to the safety + insurance frames; the work is non-negotiable for many.

NEVER tap into knob-and-tube wiring with a junction box + Romex extension to "add a few outlets." This is illegal in nearly every jurisdiction + creates a hidden fire path. The K&T was designed for soldered connections - modern wire nuts don't maintain the same conductivity. The extension violates clearance + bonding requirements. Every house fire that traces to "amateur extension off K&T" had a tech-in-a-hurry at some point. The professional approach: replace the K&T circuit entirely OR document why partial work doesn't apply + walk away from the job.
