LED Dimming Compatibility
Why this matters
A customer who replaces 12 incandescent recessed cans with LED retrofit modules and finds that they flicker, hum, drop out at low setting, or strobe on dim-up is not happy. The contractor who blames "those bad LEDs" loses the next call; the contractor who walks in already knowing that the existing dimmer is a 30-year-old TRIAC designed for resistive incandescent loads and not a modern LED-compatible model has the answer in 15 seconds. LED dimming compatibility is the #1 callback in residential lighting retrofit. The mismatch is real, the fix is straightforward, and getting it right on the first try saves the trip charge that wipes out the project margin.
Why LEDs do not dim like incandescents
An incandescent lamp is a resistive load. When you reduce the voltage, the filament cools, light output drops smoothly. The dimmer's job is simple: chop the AC waveform with a TRIAC to deliver less average voltage. Old dimmers worked beautifully with old lamps because both were designed for the same load model.
An LED lamp is a constant-voltage/constant-current LED chip plus a driver circuit (typically a switching power supply). The driver converts AC line voltage to the low-voltage DC the LED requires. When the dimmer chops the AC waveform, the driver sees a distorted input and has to interpret what the user wanted.
Three things can go wrong:
- Driver electronics misinterpret the chopped waveform: lamp flickers, drops out at low setting, or oscillates
- Minimum load threshold: TRIAC dimmers require a minimum holding current (typically 25 to 40 W) to stay latched; an LED retrofit drawing 9 W per lamp on a 6-lamp circuit may not provide enough current to keep the TRIAC stable
- EMI from chopping a switching driver's input: audible hum, RF interference, visible flicker at low setting
The fix is matching the dimmer technology to the LED technology.
Dimmer technology types

For typical residential retrofit, forward-phase or reverse-phase are the two real options. Forward-phase is what most old dimmers are. Reverse-phase is what most modern LED dimmers should be.
LED driver types
LEDs themselves are categorized by driver design:

The lamp's data sheet specifies what dimming technology it works with. A "dimmable LED" without a specified dimmer technology assumes TRIAC compatibility, but verify.

Verify before quoting
For any LED retrofit job in a home with dimmers:
- Note the dimmer brand and model number on every dimmer
- Note the existing lamp wattage and type
- Consult the dimmer manufacturer's compatibility list (Lutron, Leviton, Crestron, Cooper)
- Select LED lamps from the manufacturer's compatible list
- Quote the LED replacements PLUS the compatible dimmers as one bundle

Minimum-load and maximum-load considerations
LED dimmer specifications include:
- Maximum LED load: total LED wattage on the dimmer (typically 150W to 300W for residential dimmers); often much lower than the same dimmer's incandescent maximum (typical 600W)
- Minimum LED load: minimum number of dimmable LEDs to maintain stable operation (commonly 5 W to 25 W)
A 600W TRIAC dimmer originally controlling 6x 60W = 360W of incandescent may not work for 6x 9W = 54W of LED if the dimmer's minimum LED load is 25W and the wiring or fixture types cause additional load loss. The dimmer may flicker the LEDs at low setting.
The fix: use an LED-rated dimmer designed for low minimum loads (Lutron Diva LED+ minimum 1.25W per dimmer, Lutron Maestro CL minimum 5W).
Single-pole vs three-way LED dimmers
For multi-location dimming (a dimmer at one entrance, another at the opposite end of the room), the standard 3-way switch configuration must be replaced with:
