Lights Flicker - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports lights flickering - single room, multiple rooms, whole-house, or intermittent. The diagnostic distinguishes normal-but-annoying (LED dimmer compatibility) from emerging-failure (loose connection) from urgent (loose neutral, can damage equipment AND start fires). Flickering is a symptom whose underlying cause ranges from "nuisance" to "emergency" - diagnose to determine.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • LED + dimmer incompatibility - 25 % of flicker calls (newer LEDs, older dimmers)
  • Loose connection at switch or fixture - 18 %
  • Heavy load on the same circuit cycling on/off (refrigerator, HVAC, microwave) - 15 %
  • Loose neutral at panel - 12 % (this is the emergency case)
  • Failing utility-side connection at the weatherhead or transformer - 8 %
  • Aluminum branch wiring connection failing - 7 %
  • Failing breaker - 5 %
  • GFCI/AFCI breaker hyper-tripping (resets quickly, customer sees as flicker) - 4 %
  • Loose neutral at meter base - 3 %
  • Other - 3 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Determine scope.
  • Single fixture only → switch, fixture, or bulb issue
  • One room only → branch circuit issue
  • Multiple rooms (half the house) → 240V split-phase neutral problem
  • Whole house → utility-side or main neutral
  • Synchronous with a major appliance starting → voltage drop from load (normal-but-annoying)
  1. For single-fixture issues:
  • Try a different bulb. LED + old dimmer = incompatibility.
  • Check the bulb is tight in the socket.
  • With power off, tighten the switch screw terminals.
  1. For one-room issues:
  • Open every outlet + switch box on that circuit. Look for loose terminations, backstabbed (push-in) connections that are notorious for working loose, or burned insulation.
  • Replace any backstabbed connections with screw terminations.
  1. For half-house flicker (the urgent case):
  • Measure voltage at receptacles on each "leg" - 120V each leg-to-neutral, 240V leg-to-leg.
  • If one leg reads 90V and the other 150V (or similar imbalance), the neutral is loose. This will damage 120V appliances within hours and is a fire risk.
  • Locate the loose neutral: typically at the main panel's neutral bus, the meter base, or at the utility's transformer.
  1. For whole-house flicker:
  • Step outside; check whether neighbors have the same issue. Common = utility problem; report to the utility.
  • Check the weatherhead + service drop for loose connections OR tree contact.
  • Check the meter base for burn marks or water staining.
  1. For aluminum-branch homes:
  • Pull a switch or outlet and inspect the aluminum-to-copper connection. Loose, corroded, or installed without COPALUM/AlumiConn = fire risk.

Resolution

  • LED+dimmer incompatibility: replace dimmer with LED-compatible model OR replace LED with bulbs marked dimmer-compatible.
  • Loose switch / fixture termination: tighten or replace.
  • Heavy-load voltage drop: customer education; consider dedicating the load to its own circuit.
  • Loose neutral at panel: cut power, retorque the neutral bus connections. This is a "do not delay" repair.
  • Utility-side: call the utility immediately - it's their issue + their cost.
  • Aluminum branch failing: COPALUM connector retrofit at every connection in the home. Multi-thousand-dollar quote justified by the fire-risk documentation.
  • Failing breaker: replace.
  • Backstabbed connections: replace with screw-terminal connections everywhere on the affected circuit.

A loose neutral that causes half-house voltage imbalance can DESTROY every 120V appliance + electronic device in the home. If you measure unequal voltages between legs, this is an emergency repair - not a "schedule it next week" repair. Brief the customer immediately on the financial AND fire risk. Customer should turn off as many circuits as possible until the repair is completed.

Prevention

  • Annual electrical inspection catches loose terminations + recalled panels before they cause flicker
  • Customer education on backstabbed receptacles (visible at the next renovation)
  • Surge protection on the main panel prevents the worst of utility-side events
