Outdoor Lighting Design (Line + Low Voltage)
Why this matters
Outdoor lighting is the high-margin specialty that combines electrical, landscape design, + lighting aesthetics. Customer cost. Margin: 30 - 50% on equipment + design. Customer value: security + curb appeal + extending outdoor living hours. The electrician who can both design + install captures the full job; the electrician who only does the electrical handoffs design fee + decoration choices to a landscape lighting specialist + loses 40% of the revenue.
Two systems: line voltage vs low voltage
Line voltage (120V):
- Standard household electrical
- Powers larger fixtures (post lights, wall sconces, area floods)
- Requires NEC-compliant outdoor wiring (UF-B direct burial OR conduit)
- GFCI required at supply
- Higher install cost; higher capacity
- Brighter; longer runs OK
Low voltage (12V):
- Transformed down from 120V
- Powers landscape lighting (path lights, accent, well lights, deck rail)
- Cable buried 6" or surface-laid
- Safer for homeowner-DIY portions
- Easier modification + future additions
- Bulbs / heads commonly LED
Most residential landscape installs use both: line voltage for the major fixtures + low voltage for the decorative landscape lights.
Design principles
Three layers of light:
- Ambient (general illumination) - overall safe-walking light. Path lights, wall lights.
- Task (functional) - flood at grill area, downlight over patio table, security floods at entries.
- Accent (decorative) - uplight on tree trunks, downlight on architecture, wash on garden walls.
A good design has all three.
The "less is more" principle: fewer, well-placed fixtures look more elegant than many fixtures spaced evenly. Avoid the "runway" path lighting that lines the entire path; use periodic accents instead.
Color temperature: 2700K warm (residential ambient/accent, matches indoor warm); 3000K most popular landscape choice (warm + crisp); 3500 - 4000K commercial/utility (whiter); 5000K+ security floods (harsh but visible). Don't mix color temps in same view.
Typical residential lumens: path light 50 - 100, step/deck 30 - 80, medium tree uplight 150 - 400, large tree uplight 400 - 1,000, wall wash 100 - 300 per fixture, downlight from tree 150 - 400.
Glare control: shielded full-cutoff fixtures direct light only where wanted; bare bulbs are ugly + create night-vision problems; minimize spill onto neighbors.
Low-voltage system layout
Transformer: sized for total connected wattage + 20% future capacity (150W/300W/600W/900W/1200W); multi-tap (12V/13V/14V/15V) compensates voltage drop over long runs; photocell + timer or smart controller; mounted in dry weather-resistant location.
Cable: 10 AWG standard (up to ~100 ft), 8 AWG longer runs (100 - 200 ft), 12 AWG short runs only; UL-listed direct burial (LV cable, NOT Romex).
Voltage drop: goal 11.5 - 12.0V at every fixture. Use multi-tap transformer, center-feed long runs (T-tap from middle), loop cable back at end to balance, higher gauge for longer runs. Connections: direct-bury splice connectors (waterproof gel + grease), T-tap for branches; NEVER indoor wire nuts outdoors.
Placement: path lights 8 - 10 ft apart + 12 - 18" from edge + cable 6" deep (vary spacing - uniform looks like runway). Tree uplights 1 - 3 ft from trunk, aimed up + outward, shielded, ground stake or concrete mount. Accent fixtures 1 - 3 ft from feature, test at night before final.
Line-voltage outdoor fixtures
- Post lights: bury post 30" for stability, wiring through post into ground via conduit; 600 - 2,500 lumens.
- Wall sconces / lanterns: bolted to exterior wall, from interior junction box, weatherproof gasket required; often paired at front + back doors.
- Floodlights: 2,000 - 5,000+ lumens, aimed at driveway/sport court/security, motion-detect optional, often dusk-to-dawn photocell.
- Address numbers: backlit LED signs, 12V or line voltage, 50 - 150 lumens.
Smart lighting controls
Smart transformer / hub: app-controlled on/off + scheduling, voice via Alexa/Google/HomeKit/Matter, scenes (party, security, daily), automatic sunset/sunrise. WiFi-connected fixtures (LIFX, Philips Hue Outdoor, Lutron): individual control + color temp + brightness; higher cost premium installs. Photocell automation: simple dusk-to-dawn, cheap + reliable, no app.
Install considerations
Conduit (line voltage): PVC schedule 40 most common, 18 - 24" buried, sweeps at corners, pull rope through. GFCI outlets every 12 ft along outdoor wall per NEC for plug-in flexibility. Transformer location: garage (most common), outdoor weatherproof enclosure, near sub-panel for clean install, 15A dedicated breaker preferred. Bonding + grounding: all metallic fixtures + posts grounded, conduit bonded, equipotential per pool/spa rules if near water.
Common design mistakes
Bare bulbs (ugly + harsh - always shielded). Spotlight aimed directly at house (creates harsh contrast; backlight + side-light instead). Too many fixtures (stop at "I see the features I want to see"). Mixed color temps (pick 2700K or 3000K + stick with it). Path lights at uniform spacing (looks like runway - vary spacing + use accents). Floodlight glare into neighbor's window (shield + aim downward). Forgetting backyard/side yard (customers entertain in back; don't over-light front + leave back dark).
Service contract opportunity
Outdoor lighting fixtures shift over time (heavy rain, freeze-thaw, lawn equipment hits). Vegetation grows around them. Bulbs fail. Annual visit:
- Test transformer voltage + amperage
- Walk system; reposition + clean fixtures
- Replace failed bulbs + cleaning
- Verify control automation
- Recommend additions / upgrades
Recurring revenue /year per customer.
The single highest-converting outdoor lighting demo is the AFTER-DARK SITE VISIT. Most customers say "yeah, the front looks dark" but can't visualize the solution. Schedule a free 30-minute design walk at dusk on their property; bring a portable demo set (battery-powered path light + uplight). Show them: "This is what your maple tree looks like with one fixture aimed up. This is what your front walk looks like with five fixtures." Customer SEES it + visualizes their home transformed. Conversion rate on after-dark demos: 55 - 75% vs 20 - 30% on daytime sales calls. The dark is the close.
