Door Hardware Grades (ANSI / BHMA Standards)

Why this matters

Door hardware comes in three grades per ANSI / BHMA standards: Grade 3 (residential), Grade 2 (light commercial), and Grade 1 (heavy commercial / institutional). The grades reflect testing requirements for durability, security, and safety. Customers buying lock hardware should understand these grades; locksmiths recommending hardware should specify the appropriate grade. The wrong grade leads to premature failure or unnecessary cost.

ANSI / BHMA grading

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) test hardware against specific standards. Each grade has specific test requirements:

Lockable vs. non-lockable

Beyond grade:

  • Passage: turns to open; no lock (interior doors)

  • Storeroom: locked from both sides by key (commercial)
  • Classroom: locks from outside only; turns to unlock
  • Communicating: thumb turn from both sides (interior between rooms)

Re-keying considerations by grade

When to upgrade

For customers with old hardware:

  • Original hardware (Grade 3 from years past) may be at end of life
  • Cycle counter on doors is rare; estimate from age + use
  • Recommend Grade 2 (or higher) replacement when hardware fails or is replaced for other reasons
