Smart home adoption is mainstream. Service techs install + troubleshoot smart thermostats, locks, switches, cameras, doorbells. The tech who understands protocols + install considerations + customer setup delivers value + premium pricing. This is the field card.
Smart home protocols
Wi-Fi (802.11): high-bandwidth; covers most homes; cameras + TVs.
Z-Wave: 908 MHz US; mesh network; low-power; ideal for sensors + locks + switches.
Zigbee: 2.4 GHz; mesh; lower-power than Wi-Fi; common in newer ecosystems.
Thread / Matter: emerging cross-vendor standard; combines Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + 802.15.4.
Bluetooth: close-range; some smart locks + audio.
Cellular (LTE): standalone backup; alarm systems.
Radio frequency (RF433, 315): legacy; some garage door openers.
Smart hubs / coordinators
SmartThings (Samsung): Wi-Fi + Zigbee + Z-Wave; broad device support.
Hubitat Elevation: local processing; no cloud-dependent.
Home Assistant: open-source; runs on Raspberry Pi OR dedicated server.

Install considerations
Wi-Fi coverage: weak signal causes device drops; mesh router (Eero, Nest Wifi, Google Wi-Fi) for whole-home coverage.
Hub placement: central; line-of-sight if possible.
Power: device location near outlet OR battery-power required.
Neutral wire requirement: some smart switches require neutral; older homes may lack.
Wired sensor placement: hidden in trim, baseboard, OR ceiling.
Camera placement: per security needs; protected from weather (outdoor-rated).
Compatibility: same ecosystem OR Matter-compatible across vendors.
Network considerations
Bandwidth: cameras consume most; reduces effective router capacity.
Wireless channel congestion: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz; smart devices typically 2.4 GHz.
Network security: separate Wi-Fi network OR VLAN for IoT devices.
Local control vs cloud: local = works without internet; cloud = remote access required.
Backup: cellular hub backup (for security systems).
Smart lock install (covered separately)
Replaces existing deadbolt; same bore hole. C-wire NOT required (battery OR hardwired with battery backup).
Smart thermostat install (covered separately)
Requires C-wire OR Power Extender Kit (PEK). Battery backup not reliable long-term.
Smart switch install
Single-pole switch (replace standard):
- Power off + verify dead
- Remove old switch
- Identify hot, load, ground; some require neutral
- Wire smart switch (hot + load + neutral if required + ground)
- Mount + program device
- Test + customer setup
3-way switch (smart): requires matched receiver in second location; more complex wiring.
Common brands: Lutron Caseta (no neutral OR works without; uses unique radio), Leviton, Kasa, GE Enbrighten, Wemo.
Smart doorbell install
Wired: replaces existing doorbell; uses existing transformer + chime; 16V transformer may need upgrade (covered in common transformers).
Battery (wireless): peel + stick OR screw mount; no wiring.
Power requirements: most Wi-Fi doorbells need 16V at 30 VA OR more.
Chime kit OR resistor: for wired install on existing chime circuit.
Common smart home problems
Device offline: Wi-Fi signal weak; router reboot; firmware update needed.
Inconsistent operation: protocol interference (Z-Wave + Zigbee overlap); add range extender.
App login issues: account credentials; password reset.
Hub not responding: power cycle; reboot hub.
Camera stops recording: storage full (cloud OR SD card); subscription lapsed.
Smart lock won't open with app: Bluetooth connection lost; manual key still works.
Voice assistant not responding: Wi-Fi issue; account issue.
Customer education
Setup: walk customer through app + initial pairing.
Scenes + automations: pre-configure common scenes (good morning, away, goodnight).
Voice commands: demonstrate Alexa / Google / Siri integration.
Security: change default passwords; use 2FA where available.
Privacy: explain what data is collected + where stored.
Subscription model: cloud storage (cameras), advanced features.
Troubleshooting: customer's first call to you OR direct to brand support?
Common smart home mistakes
Skipping Wi-Fi range check (devices offline). Wrong protocol (Z-Wave device on Zigbee hub). Sharing Wi-Fi password (network security). Skipping customer setup demo (customer can't use it). Not labeling devices in app (customer confused). Forgetting C-wire for thermostat. Power supply too low for smart doorbell.
