Key Broken in Lock - Extraction and Resolution
Symptom
Customer reports their key broke off inside the lock. The customer can't operate the lock, can't enter (or exit), and can't easily extract the broken piece. This is a common service call requiring specific extraction techniques.
Likely causes
In approximate order of frequency:
- Aging key - 35 percent. Old keys metal-fatigue and snap under normal stress
- Bent key - 20 percent. Trying to operate a lock while the key was already bent
- Frozen lock - 15 percent. Customer forces a key in frozen weather; key snaps from the force
- Worn lock - 12 percent. Lock cylinder worn; customer applies excessive force to turn
- Wrong key in the lock - 8 percent. Customer's key partially fits another lock; breaks on attempted turn
- Defective key - 5 percent. Manufacturing flaw OR poor-quality blank
- Sabotage / breakage - 3 percent. Intentional or accidental damage
- Cheap copy of poor quality - 2 percent. Hardware store copies of high-security keys can break
Initial assessment
When arriving:
Step 1: Verify identity + ownership
Standard for all locksmith work:
- Customer's photo ID
- Proof of ownership / lease
- Document the verification
Step 2: Assess the situation
- Which lock? (residential, vehicle, file cabinet, etc.)
- How visible is the broken piece?
- Is the customer locked OUT or INSIDE (and can't lock the door)?
- Has the customer attempted extraction themselves?
- Is the lock damaged beyond the key?
Step 3: Quote the work
- Estimate the time
- Estimate the cost
- Customer approves before work begins
Extraction techniques
Visual extraction
If the broken piece sticks out slightly:
- Use thin-nose pliers
- Grip the visible portion
- Pull straight out
- Often works for ~30% of broken-key situations
This is the simplest case.
Spiral extractor
A specialized tool:
- Spiral extractor (looks like a small spring)
- Insert into the keyway alongside the broken key
- Rotate the extractor
- The spiral catches the key
- Pull out (extractor + key together)
Works for many situations.
Probe tool / two-prong
Various probe tools:
- Different shapes for different keys
- Insert into the keyway
- Hook the broken key
- Pull out
Specialty tools available for different lock types.
Tweezers (specialty)
Long-handled needle-nose tweezers:
- Reach into the keyway
- Grip the broken key
- Pull out
Useful for narrow keyways.
Pin disassembly
For deeply embedded keys:
- Disassemble the lock cylinder
- Remove pins
- Extract the key from inside
This is more invasive but works when other methods fail.
When extraction fails
If the key can't be extracted:
- Replace the lock cylinder
- Provide new keys to the customer
- Customer can keep the old key (broken)
Replacement is sometimes the right answer; less time than aggressive extraction attempts on damaged keys.
Customer comfort during the wait
While performing the work:
- The customer is typically anxious (often locked out)
- Be calm and reassuring
- Estimate the timeline
- Don't rush; quality work prevents follow-up
Common situation specifics
Car ignition (key broken in)
For automotive:
- The ignition cylinder is more complex
- May require ignition cylinder disassembly
- Specialty automotive tools
- The vehicle may have other failures to address
- Often coordination with the customer's car key programmer
Time + cost may be higher than residential.
Padlock (key broken in)
For padlocks:
- Sometimes the padlock can be opened with the broken piece + extraction technique
- Often easier to cut the shackle
- Less common to retain the old padlock
The customer's preference + the padlock's value determines.
Front door deadbolt
Standard residential:
- Extract the broken key
- Verify the lock operates normally
- Cut a new key from the cylinder
- Provide multiple keys if customer wants
Customer expectations: a working door + new keys.
File cabinet / desk
Smaller lock:
- Extract the broken piece (easier than door locks usually)
- Cut a new key OR replace the cylinder
- Faster work; lower cost
After successful extraction
Once the broken key is out:
- Inspect the lock cylinder for damage
- Operate the lock with a known-good key (if customer has one)
- Verify smooth operation
- Lubricate if appropriate
- Cut a new key if the customer needs one
Most extracted-key locks operate normally afterward. Some need replacement if the cylinder is damaged from the broken key.
When the lock is damaged
If the broken key damaged the cylinder:
- Cylinder replacement
- Match the original lock if possible
- Provide new keys
- Document the work
Preventing future incidents
Customer education:
- Don't force keys. If the key isn't working easily, something is wrong
- Replace worn keys before they break (signs: bent, hard to turn, hard to remove)
- Lubricate locks annually (graphite or silicone, not standard oil)
- Frozen locks: warm with hand, don't force; lock de-icer (alcohol-based) helps
- Use the right key. Make sure you're using the right key for the right lock
A customer who has lost the key from breakage may want a new key as a precaution.

For the broken-key customer:
- "I'll extract the broken piece without damaging the lock"
- "Once extracted, I'll verify the lock operates normally"

- "Replace worn keys before they break in the future"
Common pitfalls
- Pushing the broken piece deeper into the lock - makes extraction harder
- Damaging the cylinder during extraction - additional replacement work
- Skipping the verification - lock may have unrelated issue
- Not providing multiple new keys - customer wants spares
