Medeco X4 vs KIK (Knob In Knob) Decision Reference

Why this matters

Medeco offers two distinct product lines that customers and even some locksmiths conflate: the Medeco X4 (a hardened steel high-security cylinder with patented sidebar, drilled and rotating pins) and Medeco KIK (Key-In-Knob) replacement cylinders that drop into commodity entry locks. Selling an X4 cylinder to a customer who only needed a basic restricted-keyway upgrade burns the customer's budget on capability they cannot use. Recommending KIK on a high-asset application leaves the customer with a UL 437 graded cylinder bolted to an unhardened knob assembly that snaps off with a pipe wrench. This reference frames the decision around what the cylinder is bolted to, what the threat model is, and what key-control commitment the customer can sustain.

What the X4 actually is

The Medeco X4 is the current-generation flagship pin-tumbler / sidebar cylinder. Construction:

• 6-pin chambers with chisel-tip rotating bottom pins (Medeco's defining feature - bottom pins must rotate AND elevate to align with the shear line and sidebar code)
• Sidebar with 6 code positions independent of the elevation code
• Hardened steel inserts at the drill points
• ANSI/BHMA A156.30 Grade 1 certification at the cylinder level for Auxiliary Locks
• UL 437 listing (current certification covers drill, pick, and key-bumping resistance)
• Patented restricted keyway with utility patent extending into the late-2030s window (verify Medeco's current patent status before quoting "patent-protected through year X" to a customer)

The X4 is sold in mortise, rim, KIK (yes, Medeco also sells X4 in KIK form factor), and large-format interchangeable core (LFIC) variants. Key control is dealer-restricted - Medeco X4 keys can only be cut by authorized dealers who carry the customer's signature card on file.

What KIK (Key-In-Knob) is

KIK is a form factor, not a security grade. KIK cylinders are the round threaded cylinder body that screws into a commodity entry knob (Kwikset, Schlage, Yale residential, Defiant, etc.). A Medeco KIK cylinder is a high-security cylinder in KIK form factor; a generic KIK cylinder is whatever the OEM ships, typically a 5-pin standard-keyway pin tumbler with no security pins.

KIK installations have a structural problem independent of the cylinder grade: the knob itself is the weak link. A Schlage residential knob (ANSI Grade 3 typical) will surrender to a 1500-psi adjustable pipe wrench applied to the knob in under 30 seconds. Bolting an X4 cylinder into a Grade 3 knob is a category error - the door no longer opens with the lawful key but it also no longer takes a tool attack at the cylinder. The attacker just twists the knob off.

Decision matrix

For each customer scope, the threat model and the door hardware drive the cylinder choice.

Residential entry doors with stock Schlage / Kwikset knobs and deadbolts:

• Customer wants restricted keyway without grade upgrade - install a Medeco KIK in the deadbolt and leave the knob alone (knob is decorative latching, deadbolt is the security)
• Customer wants ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt with X4 cylinder - replace the entire deadbolt with a Medeco Maxum Deadbolt or equivalent Grade 1 deadbolt housing AND install the X4 cylinder. Do not stop at just the cylinder swap.

Commercial entry with mortise lock body (Sargent 8200, Schlage L Series, Best 45H, Yale 8800):

• Cylinder upgrade alone is appropriate. The mortise housing is already Grade 1. Specify the X4 in Medeco's mortise cylinder spec matching the housing (typical 1-1/8 in or 1-1/4 in length depending on door thickness).

Commercial entry with cylindrical lever lock (Schlage ND Series, Sargent 10 Line, Best 9K, Falcon T Series):

• These are Grade 1 cylindrical locks with hardened collars. X4 in the KIK or LFIC form factor is appropriate.

High-asset interior doors (server room, file room, evidence room, pharmacy, cannabis cultivation): X4 is the floor, not the ceiling. Consider:

• Adding a high-security mortise body (Sargent 8200LE with X4 cylinder)
• Adding an electric strike or magnetic lock with access control overlay
• Documenting key duplication only by an authorized Medeco dealer on the customer's signature card

Key control commitment

The X4 product only delivers its security value if the customer enforces dealer-only duplication. A customer who hands a Medeco key to an employee who takes it to a corner hardware store may find that the local shop cannot cut the X4 blank - which is by design. But customers who do not understand this become frustrated. Set expectations:

• All key duplication runs through the authorized dealer with a signature card
• The dealer keeps a key-bitting record; customer can audit and reissue
• Lost-key response is a complete re-key of the affected master segment, not a single replacement

Customers who want the patented keyway protection but cannot manage the dealer-only workflow are better served by Medeco's Medeco3 (older platform but still in catalog with simpler key control rules) or by ASSA Twin Pro (similar grade, different key control model).

Drill resistance and known attack vectors

X4 hardened inserts make a direct drill on the pin stack a multi-hour attack with a carbide bit. Attackers move to:

• Pick - X4 pick resistance is high but not infinite. UL 437 listing requires resistance to picking for at least 10 minutes by a skilled examiner. Field bypass times reported by penetration testers vary but a determined attacker is on the order of 30 minutes plus to defeat a well-installed X4.
• Bumping - X4 with rotating pins is bump-immune in practice; the bump key cannot induce rotation in the bottom pins.
• Sidebar bypass - The sidebar adds a code dimension orthogonal to elevation; defeating it requires impressioning or a calibrated decoder. Field defeat is not practical.
• Cylinder pull / snap - direct pull attack on the cylinder body. Mitigated by hardened mounting plate (Medeco BiLock or similar protector) and proper torque on the cylinder cam screw.

When NOT to specify X4

If the customer has no key-control budget, no facility manager to administer keys, and no compelling threat model (a single-family residence with no high-value contents and an alarm system), a Medeco3 in KIK form factor or even a quality Schlage Primus delivers most of the marginal security at lower lifetime cost.

If the customer is in a multi-tenant residential building managed by a property manager whose vendor pool does not include a Medeco dealer, the X4 will create a service-call dependency that the building cannot meet. Specify a regional alternative the building's existing vendor can service.
