New Smart Lock Won't Lock: Calibration vs Strike vs Alignment Commissioning Tree

Why this matters

A motorized smart lock that will not throw its bolt on a fresh install is a commissioning failure, not a defect, in the large majority of cases. The motor has more than enough torque to drive a bolt into a clean strike; when it stalls, retracts, or reports a jam, the bolt is fighting friction the installer left behind. The three suspects are the lock's own calibration routine, the strike pocket the bolt must enter, and the door-and-frame alignment that governs how square the bolt meets the strike. Working them in order turns a frustrating callback into a five-minute adjustment and prevents the customer from concluding the lock is junk.

Symptom presentation

  • Motor runs, bolt extends partway, then retracts and reports a jam.
  • Bolt throws fine with the door open but stalls when the door is closed.
  • Lock locks but unlocks erratically, or vice versa, suggesting a one-directional calibration drift.
  • Audible motor grind or repeated retry cycling.
  • Manual key or thumbturn (if equipped) throws hard too, which points away from the electronics.

Quick checks

  • Throw the bolt by motor with the door wide open. Clean full travel proves the motor and the lock body are healthy and isolates the fault to the door, frame, or strike.
  • Throw the bolt manually with the thumbturn or key, door closed. Hard manual throw means a mechanical alignment problem the motor cannot overcome. Smooth manual throw with motor failure points at calibration or the drive coupling.
  • Re-run the lock's auto-calibration or handing routine per its sequence. Many motorized locks learn bolt travel on first power-up; an interrupted learn leaves the lock guessing its endpoints.
  • Confirm battery voltage. A weak pack drops motor torque and produces a partial-throw-then-jam exactly like a strike bind.
  • Verify the bore and backset match the lock. A deadbolt installed in a bore that is slightly off, or with a tailpiece or torque blade not fully seated into the interior module, binds the drive before the bolt ever reaches the strike. Confirm the interior and exterior halves pulled together square, the mounting plate is flat against the door, and the screws are not over-torqued enough to clamp and distort the bolt housing.

Isolation tree

Branch 1, motor throws fine open, jams closed, manual throw also hard closed. Pure alignment or strike. The bolt is hitting the strike lip or the pocket is too shallow or misplaced. Mark the bolt, throw against the strike, read the witness mark, and relieve or relocate the strike. Verify the door is not sagging.

Branch 2, motor throws fine open, jams closed, but manual throw is smooth closed. The motor lacks the torque margin the bolt needs at the very end of travel, usually because the strike clearance is marginal even though a human can muscle it. Increase strike clearance so the bolt enters with zero drag, and recheck battery voltage.

Branch 3, motor stalls or mis-locks even with the door open. Calibration or mechanical. Re-run the handing and calibration routine. If it still fails open, suspect the drive coupling, the tailpiece engagement, or a bolt installed against its handing. Reseat the interconnect between the motor module and the deadbolt.

Branch 4, weak or erratic behavior, retries, brownout resets. Power. Replace the battery pack with fresh cells, confirm correct orientation, and re-test. Low torque mimics every mechanical fault.

Branch 5, locks one direction reliably, fails the other. Asymmetric calibration. The learned travel does not match true travel in one direction. Recalibrate; if it persists, the bolt drags only on the unlock stroke, often a strike-lip catch on retract.

Confirming diagnosis

The two-test gate settles it: door-open motor throw plus door-closed manual throw. Open-good and closed-bad with hard manual equals alignment. Open-good and closed-bad with smooth manual equals torque margin or strike clearance. Open-bad equals calibration, coupling, or power. Prove which before you touch the strike, because relieving a strike that was never the problem hides a calibration fault that will resurface.

Remediation

  • Strike or alignment: relieve the strike mouth, relocate the strike to the bolt path, square the door, address sag.
  • Torque margin: open up strike clearance, install fresh batteries, confirm the bolt enters with no drag.
  • Calibration: re-run the handing and auto-calibration routine end to end without interruption.
  • Coupling or handing: reseat the motor-to-deadbolt interconnect, confirm correct handing per the install sequence.
  • Power: install a fresh battery pack of the specified chemistry and confirm voltage.

Leave the customer a bolt that throws with light, repeatable motor effort, door closed, on a full battery.

A commissioning habit that prevents the most common callback: deliberately oversize the strike clearance rather than fitting the bolt snugly. A motorized lock has a fixed torque budget, and a strike pocket that a human can muscle the bolt into may leave the motor no margin once the battery ages or the door swells with the season. Open the strike opening so the bolt enters with visible clearance on all sides and zero drag, then confirm the bolt still throws its full projection and the door is not loose. A bolt that enters freely today survives a weak battery and a humid month; a bolt that fits perfectly today jams the first cold morning. Finish by cycling the lock through several full lock and unlock operations from the keypad or app, watching for any retry or jam report, so the commissioning is proven under the same path the customer will use, not just by a single bench throw.
