Locksmiths who can open safes (and service them properly) expand into a profitable niche. The work requires specialized tools, training, and respect for the variety of safe types.
Types of safes

Opening methods
Manipulation
The traditional method for dial combinations:
- Listen to wheel contact (use stethoscope or specialized manipulation device)
- Feel wheel motion (some techniques)
- Map the contact points of each wheel
- Determine the combination through analysis
- Open without damage
Manipulation requires:
- Significant training (often 1-2 years to master)
- Time per safe (hours typical; can be days)
- Quiet environment
- Patience
This is the locksmith's "skilled" approach. The safe is undamaged after opening.
Drilling
The forced method:
- Identify the drill point (specific location depending on lock type)
- Drill at the precise location to expose lock components
- Manipulate exposed components to open
- Repair or replace damaged components
Drilling:
- Faster than manipulation (15-60 minutes typical)
- Damages the lock (requires replacement)
- Cosmetic damage to safe body (drill mark)
- Requires specific tools (carbide drill bits, drilling rig)
- Specific training to find the right drill points
For most modern safes, drilling is the practical opening method when the customer has lost the combination.
Specialty techniques
For specific safe types:

- Some have low-battery indicators
- Manual override key (typically) for emergency
Combination change

- Set the new combination
- Remove the change key
Time: typically 30-60 minutes.
For electronic combinations:
- Enter the master combination
- Press the change button (varies by model)
- Enter new combination
- Confirm

When the customer doesn't have ANY way in
For genuinely locked-out situations:
- Verify identity + ownership: critical
- Determine the safe type
- Assess the opening method:
- Manipulation (preferred but time-intensive)
- Drilling (faster; damages the lock)
- Quote the work with options
- Document everything
Some safes have time-delay features that lock for hours / days after wrong combination attempts. These require waiting or specialized techniques.
Identity verification
Critical for safe opening:
- Customer's photo ID
- Proof of ownership (purchase receipt, title, lease agreement)
- Documentation of the safe location
- Reason for opening
- Document the verification in the customer file
A safe locksmith who doesn't verify identity becomes the burglar's tool. This is non-negotiable.
Working with the customer
Setting expectations:
- "Opening the safe requires specific technique"
- "I'll attempt manipulation first (no damage)"
- "If manipulation isn't successful, drilling is the alternative"
- "Drilling causes damage but is faster"
- "I'll verify your identity before any work"
A customer who understands the trade-offs makes informed decisions.
Cost considerations
Safe opening is specialty work:
- Manipulation can take 1-8+ hours (significant labor cost)
- Drilling is faster but adds parts cost (replacement lock + body repair)
- Plus the locksmith's specialized tools investment
Cost varies significantly. Quote BEFORE starting; customer decides.
When the safe is unrepairable
Some safes are at end-of-life:
- Old / discontinued models
- Multiple failures
- Severe damage from forced entry
- Specific brands no longer supported
The customer's choice:
- Replace the safe
- Repair if parts are available
- Accept the safe's reduced functionality
