Smart Lock vs Traditional Deadbolt Selection
Why this matters
The "smart lock or deadbolt" decision now comes up on almost every residential install. Customers are influenced by app marketing, voice-assistant integration, and AirBnB workflows. None of those drivers address the security and reliability questions that determine whether the lock holds up across a five-to-ten-year service life. As the professional in the room, the locksmith owns the technical recommendation.
What "smart lock" actually means
The term covers three architectures that look similar at the door:
Deadbolt-replacement smart locks (Yale Assure, Schlage Encode, Kwikset Halo, August Smart Lock 4th Gen): a battery-powered lock that replaces the entire deadbolt assembly. Includes a keypad, app connectivity (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth), and usually a key override.
Retrofit smart locks (August Wi-Fi, Level Lock+, Wyze Lock): a battery-powered actuator that mounts on the interior side of an existing deadbolt and rotates the thumbturn. The exterior side is the original deadbolt cylinder; physical key still works.
Smart deadbolt with mechanical key only (older Schlage Connect, Yale Assure no app): keypad entry plus key override, no app or remote access. Battery-powered keypad, mechanical lock body.
The retrofit category is the only one that preserves the original ANSI/BHMA-rated mechanical deadbolt unchanged. Categories 1 and 3 replace the lock body with a new assembly that may or may not match the security grade of the original.
ANSI/BHMA grading
Residential deadbolts are graded per ANSI/BHMA A156.36:
- Grade 1: the highest residential grade. Withstands 1,000,000 actuation cycles, 10 striker impacts at 75 ft-lb, 100,000 dynamic key cycles. The bolt must extend 1 inch minimum. Bolt and strike are tested for axial and lateral loads.
- Grade 2: mid-grade. 800,000 actuation cycles, 5 impacts at 75 ft-lb.
- Grade 3: entry-level. 200,000 cycles, 2 impacts at 75 ft-lb. Acceptable for low-risk interior or vacation-home use; not the right spec for a primary entry door.
For residential entry doors, specify Grade 1 (or Grade 2 as the minimum acceptable). Major Grade 1 traditional deadbolts include Schlage B series (B560, B660, B680), Medeco Maxum, Mul-T-Lock Hercular.
Smart lock grades vary significantly:
- Schlage Encode: Grade 1
- Yale Assure SL Touchscreen: Grade 2
- Kwikset Halo: Grade 2
- August Smart Lock 4th Gen: not BHMA-graded as a deadbolt (it is a retrofit thumbturn actuator; the underlying deadbolt's grade applies)
- Level Lock+: Grade 1
Verify the BHMA grade on the specific model spec sheet; do not assume by brand.
Failure modes that matter
Traditional deadbolt failure modes (well-understood):
- Cylinder pick or bump attack: addressable with high-security cylinders (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy, ASSA)
- Strike-plate kick-in: addressable with 3-inch screws to the framing, reinforced strike plates (Strike-Master, Door Defender)
- Lock cylinder pull or drill attack: addressable with anti-drill plates and high-security cylinders
Smart lock failure modes (newer, less well-understood by customers):
- Battery failure: all powered smart locks die when batteries deplete. Quality units warn at 20 percent and 10 percent; budget units die without warning. Most residential failures the locksmith sees post-install are dead-battery lockouts. Lock must have a physical key override OR an external 9V battery contact for emergency power.
- Wireless reliability: Wi-Fi smart locks lose remote access when the home internet drops. Bluetooth-only smart locks only work within 30 to 50 feet. Z-Wave and Zigbee require a hub.
- Firmware bricking: failed firmware update renders the lock unresponsive. Recovery sometimes requires factory reset (which deletes all user codes and pairings) or manufacturer service.
- Cloud service shutdown: several smart lock brands have been acquired or discontinued, leaving locks without app support. Check the manufacturer's history before specifying.
- Cybersecurity: smart locks with weak authentication can be exploited remotely. Major brands have published security audits; check whether the model has had documented vulnerabilities and whether firmware updates address them.
Selection criteria
Choose a traditional Grade 1 mechanical deadbolt when:
- Customer prioritizes security over convenience
- No need for remote access, time-bounded codes, or activity logging
- Customer is technology-averse or older homeowner who does not want app management
- High-security cylinder (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) is desired for pick and bump resistance
Choose a deadbolt-replacement smart lock (Grade 1 only) when:
- Customer needs remote access for property management, vacation rentals, dog walkers, cleaners
- Multiple users need their own codes with audit trail
- Time-bounded access (e.g., Airbnb checkout time) is a recurring requirement
- The home has reliable Wi-Fi and the customer maintains the network
Choose a retrofit smart lock when:
- Customer wants smart features but already has a Grade 1 deadbolt they trust
- The historic or architecturally specific deadbolt cylinder should not be replaced
- Customer wants the option to revert to original lock if the smart system fails
Avoid smart locks when:
- The door is the only entry and key override is not available
- The home has poor Wi-Fi and the smart features will not function reliably
- The customer cannot or will not commit to firmware updates and battery replacement
Battery and reliability spec
For deadbolt-replacement smart locks, verify:
- Battery type: standard alkaline AA or AAA preferred over proprietary lithium packs. Replacement is easier and the homeowner does not depend on a back-ordered battery pack.
- Battery life: minimum 6 months under normal use. Premium units claim 12 months. Real-world life varies by climate (cold reduces battery life), Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth (Wi-Fi consumes more), and frequency of use.
- Low-battery indication: visible LED warning at 20 percent, audible warning at 10 percent, push notification if connected.
- Emergency power: 9V battery contacts on the exterior face (Schlage standard) or USB-C emergency power port (some newer designs).
- Physical key override: yes, with high-security cylinder option if desired.
Installation considerations
Smart locks are generally heavier than traditional deadbolts because of the battery housing and motor. Verify:
