Asphalt Shingle Types + Ratings Reference
Overview
Asphalt shingles dominate residential roofing in North America (~75% of installed roofs). Understanding the categories, ratings, + warranties is essential to quoting + selling correctly + matching the right product to the right house.
Three main categories
1. Three-tab (legacy / budget)
- Single-layer, uniform-pattern shingle with cutouts
- 12-15 year life expectancy
- Lower wind rating (typically 60 mph)
- Lowest materials cost per square (100 sq ft) of the three tiers
- Visible repetition pattern
- Largely replaced by architectural in new installs
Best for: rental properties, sheds, budget reroofs. Not best for: long-term residential.
2. Architectural / Dimensional / Laminate (mainstream)
- Two layers laminated together for dimensional appearance
- 25-30 year typical warranty (some 50-year)
- Wind ratings 110-130 mph standard
- Roughly 1.5x three-tab materials cost per square
- Most common new installation
- Better aesthetic than three-tab
Best for: most residential reroofs + new construction.
3. Designer / Premium / Luxury
- Triple-layer or multi-layer with enhanced dimensionality
- 40-50 year warranty, transferable
- Wind rating 130-150 mph
- The highest materials cost per square of the three tiers, several times three-tab
- Slate-like, shake-like, or scalloped appearances
- Heaviest weight
Best for: high-end residential, custom homes, architectural matching.

- Three-tab: the entry-level tier
- Architectural standard: a meaningful step up from three-tab
- Architectural high-grade: roughly 1.5x three-tab
- Designer: the highest tier, more than double three-tab
Wind rating
Tested per ASTM D3161 / D7158.

For coastal Florida, Carolinas, Texas Gulf: minimum Class G; Class H strongly recommended.

Impact rating (hail)
Tested per UL 2218.
- Class 1: tested with 1-1/4" hail, falls 12 ft
- Class 2: 1-1/2" hail, 15 ft
- Class 3: 1-3/4" hail, 17 ft
- Class 4: 2" hail, 20 ft
Class 4 shingles can earn 5-25% insurance discount in hail-prone states (CO, OK, KS, MO, NE). Premium product cost recovers in 3-7 years.
Algae resistance
Some regions (Southeast, Pacific Northwest) develop dark streaks on roofs from algae growth.
- Standard shingle: no protection
- Algae-resistant (AR): copper granules embedded; 10-15 year protection
- Premium AR: lifetime guarantee against streaking
Worth the small upcharge in humid climates.
Color + style trends
- Neutral tones: charcoal, weathered wood, slate gray most popular
- Avoid: bright colors fade faster + may clash with future paint changes
- Match house style: shake-look on craftsman, slate-look on colonial, standard architectural on most ranch
Warranty details
Warranty types:
- Material defect: covers manufacturing failures (rare)
- Wind: covers blow-off under rated wind speed
- Algae: covers streaking (if AR product)
- System warranty: covers when installer is manufacturer-certified + uses full system
System warranties (e.g., GAF Golden Pledge, CertainTeed SureStart Plus) are most valuable:
- 50-year non-prorated
- Transferable
- Covers labor, materials, tear-off
- Requires certified installer + full system components
Always quote system warranty when possible - adds 15-25% close rate even at premium price.
Underlayment options
Beneath shingles:
- Asphalt felt (15# or 30#): traditional, cheaper, less durable
- Synthetic underlayment: tear-resistant, lighter, walkable, more expensive
- Self-adhering (ice + water shield): required at eaves + valleys in most jurisdictions
Synthetic is increasingly standard; required by some manufacturers for system warranty.

Choosing for the customer
Questions to ask:
- How long do you plan to be in the house? (< 10 years: standard; > 15 years: premium)
- What's your storm exposure? (high: Class G or H, Class 4 hail)
- What's the architectural style?
- What's your budget?
- Any HOA requirements?
Match recommendation to answers; don't oversell or undersell.
Common mistakes
- Mixing shingles from different lots: color shading visible; always order +10% from same lot
- Using lower-grade in hidden areas (rakes, etc.): same product everywhere
- Quoting 3-tab in high-wind zone: callback liability
- Promising 50-year warranty without system spec: warranty void if not full system
- Ignoring algae in humid climate: 5-year streaking complaint
The single biggest reroof-margin opportunity: SELL SYSTEM WARRANTIES. The premium pricing covers your manufacturer-certified status + the value-add for the customer is real (transferable warranty, labor coverage, peace of mind). Manufacturer-certified installers close 25-40% more reroofs at 15% higher margins than non-certified competitors.
