Ridge Cap Nailing Pattern Per Asphalt Shingle Warranty

Why this matters

Ridge caps fail more often than field shingles, and when they fail the warranty claim almost always comes back as installer error. The most common cause is the wrong nailing pattern: two nails per cap instead of the manufacturer specified four, or nails driven outside the adhesive strip. Every major asphalt manufacturer (GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko) publishes a specific ridge cap nailing pattern in their installation instructions, and that pattern is the warranty trigger. Get it wrong and a lifted ridge cap becomes the homeowner's problem, not the manufacturer's.

What "warranty nailing" actually means

The published warranty requires the cap to be fastened per the installation instructions. Most manufacturers spec:

  • 4 nails per cap, NOT 2. The legacy 2 nail pattern was for 3 tab caps cut from field shingles. Modern hip and ridge accessories (laminated or high profile caps) require 4 nails.
  • Nails must penetrate the underlying cap by a minimum specified distance to engage the sealant strip. GAF Seal A Ridge requires nails placed 1 inch up from the bottom edge and 1 inch in from each side, then 5 5/8 inches up from the bottom for the second pair.
  • Hand sealing with a compatible roof cement is required at the final exposed cap on each hip or ridge run and at any cap that lands within 3 feet of a roof edge in high wind zones (IBC 2021 wind speed maps).

The pattern varies by product. Always read the instructions printed inside the bundle wrapper or available on the manufacturer's website. A pattern that works for Owens Corning DuraRidge will void the warranty on CertainTeed Mountain Ridge.

Step by step: hand sealed ridge cap install

  1. Confirm field shingle install is complete and field shingles run to within 1 inch of the ridge or hip line but do NOT cross over.
  2. Snap a chalk line down the center of the ridge to keep cap alignment straight. A wandering line shows from the ground.
  3. Start at the end opposite the prevailing wind. The first cap should overhang the rake or hip starter by approximately 1/2 inch.
  4. Position the first cap and drive 4 nails per the manufacturer pattern. Typical: 1 inch from each side edge, 1 inch up from the bottom edge of the next cap exposure.
  5. Each subsequent cap exposes a specified amount (commonly 5 5/8 inches for laminated caps, 5 inches for traditional 3 tab cuts). The next cap's nails should sit 1 inch above the exposure line so the following cap covers them.
  6. At hip rakes, miter cut the first cap so it follows the hip ridge line and the angle is clean.
  7. The final cap on each run: cut to length, hand seal across the full underside with a 3 inch diameter dollop of asphalt plastic cement (ASTM D4586 Type I or II), and face nail with 2 additional nails. Cover exposed face nail heads with a dab of matching color sealant.

Nail length

The nail must penetrate through the cap AND through the underlying shingle AND into the deck by a minimum of 3/4 inch. For a typical installation (two layers of cap material plus the field shingle plus deck), this means a 2 inch ring shank or smooth shank roofing nail in 7/16 OSB or 1/2 plywood. On a 5/8 deck or where there is an underlayment buildup, go to 2 1/4 inch. Short nails that bottom out in the deck do not develop holding power and lift in the first windstorm.

Per IRC 2021 R905.2.5, fasteners must penetrate through or extend at least 1/8 inch beyond the underside of plywood decking, or through nominal lumber decking. The manufacturer's instruction often calls a tighter standard (penetration into deck by 3/4 inch) and the tighter standard governs the warranty.

High wind zones (IBC 1609 / IRC R301.2.1.4)

In wind zones above 110 mph design wind speed, the published instructions typically require:

  • 6 nails per field shingle, not 4.
  • Hand sealing of every cap in addition to the factory sealant strip.
  • Use of an enhanced high wind hip and ridge accessory (GAF TimberTex HD, CertainTeed Cedar Crest HD, OC ProEdge Hip and Ridge with SureNail technology).

Coastal Florida (HVHZ per FBC), the Carolinas, the Gulf Coast, and tornado alley jurisdictions enforce these enhanced patterns through local inspection. A roof installed to standard pattern in these zones fails inspection regardless of what the bundle says.

Common warranty rejections

Two nails per cap on a 4 nail product: visible in every claim photo and immediately disqualifying.

Nails above the sealant strip on the cap: the upper cap does not engage the sealant on the lower cap, the wind catches the bottom edge, the cap rolls. Common when the installer eyeballs the position instead of using a gauge.

Mismatched cap accessory and field shingle warranty: using a generic cap with a designer shingle drops the warranty to the lesser of the two. Most manufacturers require their matched accessory for full warranty coverage.

Missing hand sealing at terminals: end caps that were not hand sealed lift first. Photo evidence at termination is the most common claim photo.

Pneumatic nailer overdriven or under driven nails: per IRC R905.2.5, the nail head must be flush with the shingle surface, not driven into or above. Set the gun pressure for the conditions; check every tenth nail by hand.

Working at the ridge means working at the highest fall hazard point on the structure. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.501 requires fall protection for any work above 6 feet on a residential roof. A personal fall arrest system with a permanent or temporary ridge anchor, a self retracting lifeline rated for leading edge use, and a full body harness is the minimum. A roofer who falls from the ridge falls the full peak height plus the gable rake.
