Ridge Vent Leaks Only With Wind From One Direction Decision Tree
Why this matters
A ridge vent that stays dry in most storms but leaks every time the wind comes from one specific bearing is reporting a design or installation defect in the vent itself, not a hole in the roof. Wind hitting the ridge from a perpendicular direction creates pressure that drives rain up and into the vent slot if the external baffle is missing, undersized, or the wrong product. Because the leak is directional, a tech who hoses the ridge straight down will never reproduce it and will sign off a roof that fails on the next crosswind storm. Diagnosing this means understanding how a ridge vent is supposed to shed wind-driven rain and confirming which of the common failures applies.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports a leak along the ridge line or at the peak of a room, occurring only when storms blow from a particular direction, often the prevailing storm side. The leak quits when the wind shifts even if rain continues. Inside, water shows at the highest point and runs down rafters. On the roof you may find a ridge vent without an external wind baffle, a shingle-over vent installed with the slot cut too wide, missing end plugs, or two different vent products spliced together. The roof field below the ridge is intact.
Quick checks
Confirm the directionality: ask which way the wind blows when it leaks and whether it ever leaks in calm rain. In the attic, verify the wet track originates at the ridge slot, not lower on the slope. On the roof, identify the ridge vent type (shingle-over with baffle, aluminum with baffle, or a no-baffle older style) and check for an external baffle on the windward side. Measure the cut slot width against the manufacturer spec; an over-cut slot lets wind-driven rain past the baffle. Inspect the end terminations for plugs, and check whether the ridge vent meets a hip, a wall, or simply ends in open air at the gable.

Match the directional leak to a ridge-vent failure mode.
- Ridge vent has no external wind baffle (older roll vent or no-baffle product). Wind from the open side drives rain straight into the slot. This is the most common cause of directional ridge leaks. Confirm by inspecting the windward edge of the vent.
- Baffle present but the slot was cut too wide or the deck cut runs past the vent ends. Rain blows in beyond the baffle's protection. Measure slot width and check the cut length against the vent length.
- End plugs missing at the ridge terminations. Wind packs rain into the open ends and along the under-vent channel. Confirm by looking at the ends for foam or plastic end caps.
- Two dissimilar ridge vent products spliced, or a gap at a hip-to-ridge junction. Wind finds the discontinuity. Inspect every joint and transition.
- Ridge vent paired with open gable vents. The gables pressurize the attic and can push moisture, plus they short-circuit airflow; under crosswind this aggravates intrusion. Confirm gable vents are present and open.
- Track originates below the ridge on the slope. Then it is not the ridge vent; it is a field or flashing leak. Stop this tree.
Confirming diagnosis
Reproduce wind from the failing direction. The reliable field test is to apply water at the windward edge of the ridge from the side and slightly upward, simulating rain blown against the vent, while a helper watches the ridge inside with a flashlight and moisture meter. A straight-down hose on the ridge cap will not reproduce a wind-driven ridge leak, which is exactly why ordinary tests pass. If you can wait for a windy day, watch the interior during a crosswind storm. Confirm the vent type and baffle visually: a no-baffle vent or one with an over-cut slot is your answer once the side-on water test reproduces the leak. Verify the leak track in the attic begins at the ridge slot to rule out a coincidental field leak.
Remediation
Replace or correct the vent so it sheds wind from every direction. The durable fix for a no-baffle vent is to remove it and install an externally baffled, wind-rated ridge vent tested for wind-driven rain resistance, following the manufacturer's slot-width and end-treatment instructions exactly. Where the deck slot was over-cut, the slot cannot simply be re-vented; trim and reinstall so the vent fully covers the opening, or narrow the slot per spec. Install the required end plugs and seal the terminations. Do not pair a ridge vent with open gable vents, close or baffle the gables so the ridge-soffit path works as intended. Match a single vent product across the whole ridge and detail hip-to-ridge junctions per the manufacturer. After the fix, re-run the side-on water test from the failing direction to confirm the ridge stays dry.
