An Upstream Change You Didn't Make Is Affecting Your System: Decision Tree

Why this matters

Your equipment is fine. What feeds it changed. The utility adjusted voltage, the water pressure crept up after a main was worked on, the gas pressure dropped when a neighbor's line was added, a shared circuit picked up a new load. You can rebuild your side all day and the fault comes back, because the cause sits upstream of your boundary and nobody told you. The fix here is not a part. It is proving where the change is, so you fix the right thing and do not eat a callback for something you do not own.

Start here: is the upstream change a hazard

Some supply changes are dangerous on their own. Handle those before you diagnose.

  • Over-voltage or a floating neutral - lights surging, multiple devices failing at once: de-energize sensitive equipment and treat it as a service-side fault. A lost neutral can put dangerous voltage on normal circuits. Get the utility out before you keep resetting things.
  • Gas pressure abnormal - appliances short-cycling, sooting, or hard to light: stop, check for leaks, and involve the gas utility. Wrong gas pressure is not a valve to adjust blindly.
  • Water pressure spiking: a failed regulator or a change on the main can push pressure past the point where relief valves weep or fittings fail. Confirm the relief path works before anything else.

Branch 1: measure at your boundary

The whole method is one idea: read the supply where it enters, before it touches your equipment. That tells you which side of the line the change is on.

  • Electrical: measure voltage at the service or the panel, unloaded and loaded. Out of range at the service is a utility issue, not your circuit. Compare line-to-line and line-to-neutral.
  • Plumbing: put a gauge on the supply at the entry, not just at the fixture. Static pressure high or low at the boundary is a supply or regulator issue.
  • Gas: check inlet pressure at the meter or first regulator. Wrong there is upstream of everything you serve.
  • Pool or shared mechanical: read the feed (power, water make-up, or the shared pump's supply) where it arrives at your equipment.

If the boundary reading is out of range, the change is upstream. If it is in range, the fault is on your side after all.

Branch 2: was the change recent, and who made it

An upstream change has a date. Find it.

  • Ask what changed nearby: a remodel, another trade's install, a utility notice, a new appliance or tenant load, work on the street.
  • A fault that started the week another crew was on site, or right after a utility outage, is telling you where to look.
  • Correlate the onset to the event. Correlation is not proof, but it aims your boundary measurement at the right time of day or load.

Branch 3: confirm it is upstream, then hand it off correctly

Once your boundary reading proves the change is upstream, do not quietly compensate for it.

  • If it is the utility's supply: document your readings and direct the customer to the utility. Adding a device to fight bad supply without fixing the supply is a band-aid that can mask a real hazard.
  • If it is another trade's work on a shared system: show the interaction plainly and coordinate. The other work may be correct in isolation; the conflict is emergent, so the fix is at the interface, not a teardown of either side.
  • If your equipment cannot tolerate a legitimate new supply condition: that is a real recommendation (protection, a regulator, a resize), but frame it as adapting to a changed supply, not as fixing a fault you invented.
