Correlating a Fault With the Customer's Own Routine
Why this matters
The most overlooked trigger in residential service is the people who live there. A fault that fails "for no reason" often fails exactly when someone showers, starts laundry, cooks dinner, leaves for work, or runs a schedule they set months ago and forgot. Routine is invisible to the person living it, which is why they never mention it. Learn to correlate a fault with a household's rhythm and you solve intermittents that no component test would ever catch.
The tell: it follows the people, not the clock
A routine-driven fault tracks occupancy and habit. It clusters at the same times people do the same things, goes quiet when the house is empty, and shifts when the household schedule shifts (weekends, a vacation, a move to working from home). The distinction worth making early: a timer fires at a fixed clock time no matter who is home, but a routine trigger moves with the people. If the pattern travels with the occupants rather than the wall clock, suspect routine.

Interview for the rhythm, not the symptom
Do not ask "when does it fail." Ask "walk me through a normal day here." Let the customer narrate the routine, then line the failures up against it. People will describe their whole schedule without ever realizing they just handed you the trigger. The symptom-first question gets you a symptom; the day-in-the-life question gets you the pattern.
The travel test
The cleanest confirmation of a routine trigger costs nothing: does it stop when they are away? If the fault goes silent during a vacation and returns the day they are back, the cause is something people do, not something the equipment does on its own. Ask about the last trip, or ask them to note the next one. Occupancy that switches the fault on and off is about as clear a signal as this work offers.
Separate the routine from what it actually drives
Be careful here, because a routine and the load it creates always move together, and that can fool you. "It fails when they shower" could be hot-water demand, drain load, or the exhaust fan on a shared circuit, three different faults wearing the same schedule. Name the mechanism, not just the habit. Vary one piece at a time (run the hot water without the fan, or the fan without the water) to find which part of the routine is the real trigger. Until you split them, you have a correlation, not a cause.
When the routine is the fix, not the fault
Sometimes the honest answer is that the design cannot serve the routine. A water heater sized for one bathroom will lose to back-to-back showers no matter how healthy it is. In that case nothing is broken, and the fix is either a design correction (more capacity) or a change in routine (stagger the demand). Offer both plainly and let the customer choose. Selling a part to fix a routine mismatch just books the callback.
