Electrical Box Sizing + Fill Reference
Why this matters
Overfilled boxes are the most common code violation on residential rough-ins. Too many conductors = heat = insulation breakdown = fire risk. NEC 314.16 gives the box-fill calculation; every electrician must do it before deciding on box size. This is the field card.
Box types + standard sizes
Single-gang plastic (PVC, nail-on for new construction): 18 cu in (typical), 22.5 cu in (deep). Light fixtures + switches + outlets.
Single-gang metal (steel, hard-rough OR old work): 12.5 - 14 cu in (4" square × 1.5" depth). Smaller; tougher to fit.
4-square box (also called "1900 box"): 4" × 4" × 1.5" = 21 cu in; 4" × 4" × 2.125" = 30.3 cu in. Multiple feeds, junction box, ceiling fixture.
4-11/16" square: deeper 4-11/16" × 2.125" = 42 cu in; heavy multi-feed work.
Round / octagonal: ceiling boxes 3.5" - 4" diameter; 12 - 21 cu in. Light fixtures, fan boxes.
Two-gang + multi-gang plastic: 32 cu in (2-gang), 50 cu in (3-gang), 70 cu in (4-gang). Switch banks + multi-outlet.
Old-work / cut-in box: lighter for retrofit; sizes vary 12 - 22 cu in.
Floor box: deep cylindrical; floor outlet receptacles.
Conductor volume per wire size (NEC 314.16)
Per NEC, each conductor counts as one volume unit. Plus extras for clamps + fittings + devices.

Box-fill calculation
Step 1 - Count current-carrying conductors: each insulated wire entering box = 1 unit. (Equipment grounds all count as 1 single largest-size conductor regardless of how many.)
Step 2 - Internal clamps: 1 unit (largest conductor size) if any cable clamps inside box.
Step 3 - Support fittings / hickeys: 1 unit (largest size) per stud OR fitting.
Step 4 - Devices (switches, receptacles): 2 units per yoke (largest conductor terminating on that device).
Step 5 - Sum all volume units × cu in per conductor size. Compare to box cu in.
Worked examples
Example 1: standard duplex outlet (#14 NM cable)
- 2 incoming #14 conductors (hot + neutral): 2 units
- 2 outgoing #14 conductors: 2 units
- Grounds (from 2 cables, count as 1): 1 unit
- Internal clamps: 1 unit
- Device (duplex receptacle): 2 units
- Total: 8 units × 2.00 = 16 cu in
A 14 cu in box fails; 18 cu in box passes (single-gang plastic OK).
Example 2: 3-way switch loop (#14 NM)
- 3 incoming #14 conductors (2 wires + ground)
- 3 outgoing #14 conductors (3-way travelers + ground)
- 4 conductors + ground: 4 + 1 = 5 units
- Clamps: 1 unit
- Device: 2 units
- Total: 8 units × 2.00 = 16 cu in
18 cu in single-gang plastic OK.
Example 3: ceiling fan junction (#12 NM, 2 cables + neutral splice)
- 2 #12 incoming (hot + neutral): 2 units
- 2 #12 outgoing: 2 units
- Ground (count once): 1 unit
- Clamps: 1 unit
- Hickey OR fixture stud: 1 unit
- Total: 7 units × 2.25 = 15.75 cu in
A 14 cu in box overflows; 4-square 30 cu in OK (deeper).
Common scenarios + box sizes
Single light + switch: 18 cu in single-gang plastic.
3-way switch: 22 cu in single-gang deep OR 4-square w/ mud ring.
4-way switch loop: 32+ cu in (large feed; many travelers).
Ceiling fan box: 4" round 21+ cu in fan-rated (UL Listed for fan).
GFCI receptacle: 2 units (1 yoke), counts like duplex; same calc.
Multi-gang switch bank: sum each gang's wires.
Rough-in box mounting
Depth: face of box flush with finished drywall (1/2" or 5/8") OR 1/4" max recessed.
Plumb / level: switch boxes 45 - 48" AFF center; outlet boxes 12" AFF center. Plumb to studs.
Securing: nail-on (new construction); old-work clips OR mounting tabs; lath + plaster screw-in. Don't drywall-screw a metal box; punch out the mounting tabs.
Cable clamping: NM cable secured within 8" of single-gang plastic box (some have integral clamps; others need staple).
Box height standards (NEC 404.8, ADA)
Switches: 48" max to top of operator handle (ADA compliant). Common = 44 - 48" AFF center.
Receptacles: 12 - 18" AFF center (typical residential). Counter outlets: per kitchen NEC.
Special locations: kitchen counter outlets 4" max above counter; bath next to vanity. ADA may require lower.
Fan-rated boxes
Required for any ceiling fan installation. NEC 314.27. UL Listed "for ceiling fan support". Standard 4" ceiling box NOT rated; common installer mistake = fan eventually pulls box loose + falls.
Specialty fan box (Reese, Madison) screws to joist OR braces between joists; 50+ lb capacity.
Common box mistakes
Box too small for conductor count (overfill = code violation + heat). Wrong box for fan (standard box pulls out). Box not flush with finished surface (NEC 314.20). Cables not properly clamped (strain on conductors). Mixed cable types in same box without correct fitting. Plastic box used in metal-conduit run (need grounding bushing). Wrong box for wet location (need weatherproof / "WP" / "WP-IUSE" box).
Wet location boxes
Damp location (e.g., porch under cover): standard plastic OK with weatherproof cover.
Wet location (exposed to direct rain, sprinklers): NEC 314.15 - UL Listed "for wet location" box + "extra duty" weatherproof cover.
In-use cover: required where cord plugged in continuously (outdoor outlet).
