House Noise Source - Day vs Night vs Temperature Change Decision Tree

Why this matters

Vague "weird noise in the house" calls are a real dispatch problem because they cross every trade. The same crack-pop-ping description fits a settling truss, an HVAC duct expansion, a plumbing water hammer, a refrigerant restriction, attic ice movement, and a pest. Random truck rolls on noises burn margin. The four buckets - continuous mechanical (HVAC, plumbing), event-driven (cycle start / stop), temperature-correlated (envelope expansion, ductwork, frozen lines), and biological (pest, bird) - each have specific patterns and trades. Getting the pattern right on the intake call decides whether the customer needs a $100 visit or a structural inspector.

Symptom presentation

Six intake questions: when does it happen (always, only at night, only during day, only at specific time, only on weather change), where is it located (one room, attic, walls, basement, whole house), what does it sound like (banging, popping, ticking, scratching, hissing, humming, knocking), is it loud / soft, is it tied to any system (HVAC running, water running, washer running), and is the season transitioning. Time-of-day plus correlation answers most calls.

Cross-trade quick checks

  • Scratching, scurrying, chewing, only at night, in walls / attic: PEST CONTROL. Rodents.
  • Tapping, scraping, daytime only: BIRDS / WILDLIFE on roof or in vent. Roofer or pest control.

HVAC path. Noise correlates with system cycles. Common: ductwork oil-canning at startup (sheet metal flexing under static pressure - undersized return, dirty filter, crushed flex), squealing blower bearing or belt, compressor scroll start / stop on a refrigerant restriction, refrigerant flow noise at the metering device (TXV / fixed orifice - normal if subtle, restriction if loud), expansion ticks in steel boiler piping. Diagnosis: cycle the system, walk and listen, note timing relative to cycle phase. Duct expansion at startup is normal but excessive popping signals undersized return or duct support failure. Steam-system banging is water hammer on a wet line - re-pitch the line for drainage, replace bad steam trap. Hydronic ticking is normal expansion of pipe through wood members; flexible isolators where pipe passes through joists fix it.

Plumbing path. Water hammer (sharp bang at shutoff) is a closing valve sending a pressure wave back through the supply. Common at washer solenoid, dishwasher fill valve, single-handle faucet shutoff, ice maker valve. Mitigation: install or replace hammer arrestors at the offending fixture per IRC P2903.5, secure any loose copper running through joists with isolators, check house static pressure (over 80 psi accelerates hammer). Continuous trickle or running noise behind a wall = active leak; isolate via meter and shut.

Structural / envelope path. Pops and bangs that correlate to temperature transition (sunrise, sunset, after sunset on a cold night) are framing members expanding and sliding past each other. Truss uplift in winter at the ceiling / wall joint is a known phenomenon. Roof decking expansion clicks at temperature change. These are normal aging-house sounds; cosmetic mitigations include crown moulding to cover the joint movement. Cold-snap "house cracking" - sharp bang when wood absorbs a fast temperature drop - is also normal. Educate the customer; refer to a structural engineer only if the sound coincides with visible movement, cracks, or deflection.

Biological / wildlife path. Scratching, scurrying, chewing only at dawn / dusk / night = rodents. Pest control trade. Daytime scratching, fluttering, or chirping = birds or squirrels at vents and soffits. Roofing / exterior + pest. Bee or wasp hum from a wall or vent on warm days = pest control. Note: rodents in walls often coincide with a roof or foundation entry path - the long-term fix is exclusion + sealing, not just trapping.

Electrical path. Continuous humming behind a wall could be a failing transformer (doorbell, low-voltage), an unbalanced phase on a large appliance, or a partially-failed receptacle. A loud 60 Hz buzz from the panel is a panel-level red flag - same urgency as panel buzzing on a flicker call.

Confirming which trade on site

The first tech confirms with three tools: a phone audio recorder, a stethoscope or contact mic, and the ability to walk the house at the times the customer reports the noise. The recorder lets the tech share the sound with a colleague or specialist trade. The contact mic on suspect framing / piping isolates the path - water hammer sounds bigger in walls than at fixtures because pipe transmits sound through framing. Step the customer through "show me where you hear it loudest, then where it sounds different." Mark those locations on a sketch.

Patterns that flip the diagnosis: a noise that only happens after a faucet runs (water hammer), only at night when the house cools and the attic cools faster (framing), only when AC starts (duct), only on the south side after sunset (wood expansion contracting), or only in spring (raccoon nesting in soffit).

A loud, recurring electrical hum or buzz coming from a panel, junction box, or recessed light is treated as an electrical hazard until confirmed otherwise. NFPA 70 110.12 covers workmanship; a humming panel is not normal and warrants an electrician same-day. Recordings or videos can help the receiving electrician triage urgency without escalating to emergency unnecessarily.

Hand-off protocol when the trade you sent is wrong

Plumber arrives, finds the noise is HVAC oil-canning: document with the recording, refer to HVAC. HVAC tech arrives, finds the noise is structural expansion at sunset: walk the customer through it, document with photos, no further trade needed unless visible deflection or cracking is found. Pest control arrives, finds the noise is plumbing: pour-test traps, refer to plumber. Every disposition gets a written summary: "noise correlates with X, diagnosis is Y, no further action needed / next trade is Z." That documentation is what defends a returned customer call three weeks later when the noise comes back from a different source.
