Separating Recent Damage from Pre-Existing Wear
Why this matters
A part is broken and someone wants to know if it just happened. If it broke during your visit, the customer may think you caused it. If it broke in the storm, the insurance claim lives or dies on that. If it failed on its own after years of wear, you owe nothing but an explanation. Recent damage and old wear leave different physical signatures, and reading them apart in the field keeps you from eating a repair you did not cause, and from waving off collateral damage you did. This is a two-bucket sort: did an event happen recently, or did a process run for a long time.
Start by separating the event from the process
Damage is a single event: a break, a crack, a gouge, a punctured line. Wear is a slow process: material worn away, corrosion built up, a surface polished or fatigued over seasons. They are not opposites and they often sit on the same part, so read both. The break face tells you when the final failure happened. The overall condition of the part tells you how long it was headed there.
The field tells, fresh versus old

Bare steel starts to haze within hours to days in normal indoor air, so a bright, clean fracture is recent, though an oiled or sealed surface stays bright longer and can fool you. Judge on several tells together, not one, because any single one has an exception.
The trap: a fresh break on an old part
The most common mistake is reading a bright fracture as proof you broke a sound part. A part that was ninety percent worn can let go the moment it gets touched, cycled, or loaded, and the final break face will look fresh even though the failure was years in the making. Read the break AND the bulk of the part. A clean fracture across a section that is otherwise heavily corroded, fatigued, or worn thin is the honest story: it was at the end of its life and it reached it now. That is different from breaking a part that is sound everywhere except where you damaged it.
Your work can be the last straw without being the cause
Vibration from your service, a pressure test, thermal cycling from a restart, or simply re-energizing a circuit can push a pre-existing condition over the edge. A brittle old fitting cracks when disturbed. A fatigued heat exchanger opens on the next burn. A corroded contactor welds on the next call. When the disturbance was normal, necessary work and the part was already failing, you triggered the timing, not the fault. The way you keep that distinction is evidence: document the pre-existing wear before and after, so "it was going to fail" is a photo, not a claim.
What it looks like across trades
- A pinhole in a water line ringed by old green corrosion is a slow failure; a bright split with clean copper is recent.
- A cracked pool or irrigation fitting that is chalky and sun-brittle all over failed from age; a clean fresh crack on otherwise sound plastic took a recent impact or overpressure.
- A scored pump seal with a matching worn groove ran damaged for a while; a fresh gouge with no counter-wear just happened.
- A burned motor winding under a thick even dust cake cooked slowly; clean fresh scorching points at a recent event.
Turn the read into the record
Photograph the fresh face and the old wear as two separate shots, because they tell two parts of the story. Then say it plainly. If it was pre-existing and at end of life, show the wear and say the part was spent. If your work was the final trigger on a failing part, say that too, with the pre-existing evidence attached. And if you genuinely put fresh damage on a sound part, own it early; the same tells that clear you when you are innocent convict you when you are not, so do not bet against your own photos.
